Police called in over Charlton fan's bid to stop Palace relegation celebration

Police are investigating after a Charlton fan threatened a pilot who had been approached by Crystal Palace supporters to fly a banner over their rivals' ground gloating about their relegation.
Eagles fans wanted the message "Who's laughing now, love from CPFC" flown over The Valley this Sunday during The Addicks' game with Norwich.
But when Charlton fans got wind of the plan, one incensed supporter sent three e-mails to the pilot warning of a "serious backlash" at the aerodrome where his plane is kept.
In the end the plan had to be abandoned, although it had nothing to do with any threat.
Instead the pilot's request to fly over south east London was turned down by the Civil Aviation Authority because of fears over where the plane could safely land if it suffered engine failure.
Palace fans had raised £800 to pay for the banner.
The desired message related to Charlton fans' joy at Palace's relegation from the Premiership in 2005 after a 2-2 draw between the fierce adversaries.
Kevin Dunn, a Palace fan who had donated money towards the banner, said: "We're angry that after our club's kind gesture to lease Charlton our stadium when they were in administration in the 1980s they choose to attack and mock us at every opportunity.
"I was disgusted at Charlton fans' glee at our demise.
"Then Simon Jordan was verbally abused after the game by the Charlton chairman telling him to enjoy the Championship, so really it's a question of payback."
Charlton have already been relegated to League One, which led to Palace fans dreaming up the idea to exact revenge.
Although the pilot asked not to be named, he told the Advertiser the threat would not have stopped him from doing the flight if he had been allowed to.
All the money which would have paid for the flight will now be donated to the Geoff Thomas Foundation.
Mr Dunn said: "It was always our intention to donate any surplus cash to the trust.
"It's sad the plane can't get off the ground but at least a large sum of money and good will come out of an initial wind up.
"Geoff Thomas was a great servant and a real gent, so we're happy, and he certainly deserves this money."
Surrey Police confirmed it is looking into the threat made to the pilot.

  • PMSL........please, stop it, LOL
  • the charlton fan who sent the email had a sense of humour failure.
  • How would a Charlton fan know which plane, which airfield or which pilot and then be able to get his email.

So silly from the Palace fans trying to make people believe that is the real reason.
  • This is quality, almost worth getting relegated for.
  • i heard they did try but you have to apply for a licence and it was rightly rejected.
  • Looks like i better change my email address !

    LOL
  • My brother-in-law has a pilots licence and a fewy ears back was chairman of the Lincoln Aero Club (where he lives)....as such he has access to being able to fly a couple of Spitfires....I would love to have got him to turn up at the same time and 'buzz' the Palarse plane.
Just the sort of thing he would have loved to have done.
  • But they still don't care about us do they...

Exactly, face saving exercise by the stripey nigels, they are almost celtic'esq in their playing the victim stance. :-)

He did say a smidge more than enjoy the championship..."tosser" Being a fly on the wall that day would have been a lot of fun.
  • Agreed AA:

They DON'T care, do they !

    Very funny !!
  • I'd quite like to spend some quality time with Kevin Dunn and remind him just how wrong he is. His club was also at risk during the Noades groundshare period and he knows it.

But Palace as a club still perpetuate the myth that they somehow "saved" us instead of trying to merge the two clubs. Comments like that show just why Palace will never be forgiven.

    Exactly!
  • Trouble is, the bloody idiots are stupid to themselves. They worshipped Jordan, but he f**ked them over. They worshipped Goldberg, but he f**ked them over. And Noades f**ked 'em left, right and centre.

Whereas we worshipped Murray, but he just f**ked it up :-)

and when the merger failed to materialise they fleeced us and treated us like shit. How many people here were at the Simod cup match against Palace, empty ground and still they stuck us in a corner of the ground with barely enopugh room to move.

Maybe the fans over there do not know, but there was never any benevolence involved. It was about taking Charltons support and when that failed ripping us off at every turn.
  • Good luck to the police with their investigation...
  • nope wasnt me and as said above WASNT ANYONE----- just Palarse spining trying to save face.

However a good friend of mine is learning to fly and she does owe me a few favours, its a helicopter tho.

  • Great cause that and well done.

What happened to the lost money applying for a licence though? ;-)

So ALL the money raised didn't go to charity. Yet another lie then.

Good cause to donate to though and good luck to them.

Indeed, what a waste. Would have been far better giving that money to to GTF as well rather than trying to get one over on your non-rivals surely?
  • couldn't agree more. Personally i didnt pledge any money as, although clearly a funny idea, anyone with a brain could see that it was never going to happen

So as all the money raised was donated by Palace fans then you are saying that Palace have a lot of brainless fans...

    Beat me to it.

"Many Palace fans are brainless" says Palace Fan.

Doesn't matter. You have your little laugh. Our turn will come again soon enough and you will never have Amerilo.

Live, Love, Laugh and Be Happy.
  • As in every club you have a small minority of morons. Those who think its clever to pick fights on those younger, start fights with stewards, cause trouble, or waste their money on things like this. You know as well as I do that your club has just as many as mine. Whether of not you'll admit that is a completely different matter however
