That around the times he(curbs) was playing against Forest that they never EVER trained just played on Saturday meet up on Friday and played again the next day. When some players complained that they wanted to train he arranged behind closed doors friendlies for Wednesday afternoons followed by a night on the piss.
And the tickets to New Zealand that were presented by Fergy on the last game were not in fact from Fergy but the directors of Charlton, something that got twisted in the press. Had a few good stories about sharing bottles of red wine with him including when Fergy gave him a nice bottle to take back to the wife, curbs said that they would only drink half and put the rest into the cooking. "not with that FUCKING bottle you won't!" was the reply
Curbs looked very relaxed, fit, well and happy - although in his opening remarks he commented on how sad it was to see Charlton's severe drop. However, Paul James (PJ) got in the question we all wanted to hear 'Would you manage Charlton again?' Curbs replied 'YES'....if the backing (money) was there he would return.
This prompted a small round of applause (as there were Hammers in the audience as well!). I for one sensed that he meant whatever league we were in. Whenever he spoke about Charlton he said 'we', so he clearly still feels for us. He admitted that he did initially only wanted a Premiership job, however he was itching to get back into management. He refuted the Sunderland link and had no idea where that story had come from. He added that nobody could do a proper job in 4 games! Although he admitted that the Shearer appointment at Newcastle could prove a shrewd move by Ashley if they survive.
PJ had some questions from the audience already written down, although the gentleman wanting his wife to understand him got little help from the ex Addicks chief! He was asked who was his best & worst signings for Charlton...a question I would have liked to have asked myself!
Curbs said that good signings were all about timing and went back as far as Garry Nelson and Steve Gatting. He felt they were just the characters we needed in our 1st season at Upton Park. He also added that Clive Mendonca was an important signing as it was the first time in years that the players could return for pre-season with the club buying rather than selling! Mark Kinsella was a vital signing in our history and was probably his best pound for pound signing. He also mentioned Dean Kiely.
The worst signing was the brief appearance of Talal El Khalej against Leeds in that 6-1 drubbing at The Valley. Previously though, he had stated that he was very disappointed that the acquisition of Dennis Rommedahl failed to work out. He was perplexed at how well he took to his defensive duties, yet couldn't understand that he was mainly needed in the final third!
He was asked if he had any regrets whilst at Charlton, to which he revealed was the sale of Scott Parker. The pair of them had fallen out big time, as Parker wanted to go. However, the club refused to sell him for the derisory offer that Chelsea and new boy Peter Kenyon were making. This took time to reach £6m, but was always knocked back immediately as not enough. After weeks of haggling, they eventually agreed on £11m.
He also spoke about the sale of Robert Lee (and Anthony Barness) when we were 2nd in the old second division, with our best player going to the league leaders Newcastle. This ultimately saw us fall away and finish 7th, however that cash generated did allow us to return to The Valley.

Which manager has had the most influence on your own style? Coaching wise he attributed to John Lyall and Ron Greenwood, his first coaches in the game at West Ham. Managing wise he revealed was Ron Saunders, however I couldn't work out if this was when he was at Birmingham or Villa as he mentioned both teams!
He revealed that he has had a lot of spare time of late and had been able to do things that he had never done before. Such as spending the whole of Xmas day at home with family as well as hosting a new years eve party. He found himself in a strange situation in December, when he had to buy a car! Previously, he had always been given company cars!
What was the most strangest thing to happen at a match? He spoke about that play-off final and that Wembley had provided them with a fella in their changing room to provide drinks and towels etc. It was very odd to have a stranger in the changing room. He went on to add that his half time talk was based on keeping Sunderland out for the first ten minutes of the second half when we were leading 1-0 at the interval. After 10 minutes we found ourselves 2-1 down and his thoughts immediately went to that stranger in our changing room and what he must of been thinking of his half time talk!!
Speaking of that day at Wembley, Curbs went on to say that they had an after match party (win or lose) planned by Richard Murray at a nearby studio. As they had this pre-arranged, they gave their 250 after match hospitality tickets to Sunderland for their own people. However, as we had got to the ground first (and been booed all the way up Wembley Way by Sunderland fans), Sunderland's coach had blocked ours in. Curbs (+ family) and Danny Mills decided to walk as it wasn't that far and they soon bumped into Mark Kinsella who was still carrying the trophy. On their brief journey, they were confronted by many Sunderland fans who congratulated us on the win and had their photos taken with Curbs and the trophy!
He did speak about West Ham as well and that he felt he was very unlucky with injuries. He was never able to play his strongest side which would have been - Green, Neill, Ferdinand, Upson, McCartney, Dyer, Parker, Noble, somebody on the left (that was what he said!), Ashton & Bellamy. Players like Mullins, Spector & Dailly played more games than he had ever anticipated.
A very enjoyable evening left me feeling proud (been a while since I felt that!) to be a Charlton supporter and how lucky we were (and might be again) to have had the legend that is Alan Curbishley at the helm.
