Bailey on his future...

"I've still got two years left on my contract and I haven't spoken to anyone so we'll see what happens. It's not up to me.

"Everyone wants me to stay and I'll keep going out and putting in the same kind of performances every week. I'm part of this team that's at the bottom of the league so if I have to be here next year and help get the team back up, that's what I'll do."

The first line would suggest that if the board/manager wants him to stay then he will (i.e. not accept any offer). I have my doubts though and would be interested to hear what he said while at his previous 2 clubs!

If he is sincere and wants to stay then it will only be a plus point.

saying the right things but "if I have to be here" doesn't inspire.

We shall see. What's said or not said in the papers is meaningless. It's what he says to his agent that counts.
  • is he?

"if I have to be here next year and help get the team back up, that's what I'll do."

If i have to be here? dont sound keen to me.

It was on the OS. ;-)
  • I think he'll stay unless a mega offer comes in for him. He's part of the solution not the problem and that needs to be spelled out to him.

I believe he said something fairly similar.

The OS is crap and always has been. How many times have a told you that?

Talentless bunch of lazy sods sitting in their luxury offices at Sparrows Lane pedalling fast food versions of the news to stuff down the fans' throats. I hope you all choke.

Full of lies and spin and never give us the real stories.
  • Was reading it earlier sounded like he is off when he first gets an offer.

Left Southend and Barnet for better things so will probably do the same to us.
  • I dug this out from another site. Apparently he rejected Southend's offer of a new contract and they stuck him on the transfer list before we signed him.

Bailey admits he is attracted by the prospect of playing at a higher level, after scouts from Premier League and the Championship flocked to check on his performances. "When I was younger I was at Fulham and got a little taste before I was released, but that has made me hungry," he said. "To play at the highest level is a huge incentive for me, I am still quite young and think I can do that. Rejecting the contract was about ambition, not about money or anything like that and I have never asked to leave the club."

So considering we're going to be back in the league he left Southend in to join us, i don't see why anyone would expect him to be staying should an offer come in for him. Top scorer, likely to be POTY, he'll be gone.
  • "if I have to be here next year and help get the team back up, that's what I'll do..."

Sounds just like Peter Shirtliff's infamous '' 'appen I have to play for Charlton now'' during the '87 play-offs.

Probably wasn't meant to sound nearly as bad as it reads on paper and frankly the OS could/should have edited/spun his words a little better than that. But all the redundancies probably mean most of the communications dept won't ''have to be here next year'' either , so may be we shouldn't blame them.
  • no players now never ask to leave as they would not get the bonuses they are due from clubs by requesting a transfer

  • I like his spirit, but he has limited ability . Where we are going will suit him much better , but who can blame him if someone wants him and he can play at championship level.
  • Limited ability? what is that then, scoring goals from midfield giving a 100% every game, or blocking shots on our goal by throwing his body in front of them, i would hardly say he has limited ability, i would say be more inclined to say if we had more like him at the club we would have had a much better season
  • The only limit he has is that he needs to realise not to slide into a challenge from 20 yards away in the penalty area!

    Totally agree with that.

Would be gutted if he left but certainly wouldn't blame him for it.
  • If selling Bailey allows us to keep hold of Shelvey and Racon i don't think anyone could complain.

I think I'd probably settle for that
  • Thing is, Bailey will see the Third division as a a step back.

It's not where he planned to be, is it?

He joined Charlton for one main reason ..... Pardew spun him the " ..... we're aiming for the play offs at the very least, and you can expect to be playing with us in the Premier next year."

Don't worry, If selling Bailey meant getting Kaka there would still be someone who will complain : - )

True but the "here's how much you'll be earning with us" bit of the chat might have helped as well.

Not exactly Mr Loyalty at his previous clubs but let's wait and see who, if anyone, comes in for him.
  • If we get a good offer for him that advances his career (Prem or upper CCC) and pays well, he will go. Regardless of the syntax he used or if we want him to.

  • 11 goals from midfield (no penalties) playing for a team rooted to the bottom of the Championship Table shouts come and get me to any Championship side and, at a pinch, Premiership.

    He's gone.

If we are lucky given our desperate financial status we will get back what we paid for him maybe even a couple of hundred thousand more.
  • [cite]Posted By: LenGlover[/cite]11 goals from midfield (no penalties) playing for a team rooted to the bottom of the Championship Table ........

    He missed his penalty, Len.

If he'd tucked it away, then he would have been our regular penalty taker.
And scored far more than his paltry 11 .....

    ;o)
  • 11 goals from centre midfield with no pens shouts quality....but then Ambrose got 9 last season didn't he, so maybe its not as difficult as it sounds!

    ;-)

Can't see him sticking about tbh, would be a shame to see him go but as others have said, if we then could keep Jonjo & Racon I would be happy enough...I would then go and get Kevin Nicholls who must be on a freebee and would be a more than able holding midfielder at League1 level for us.
  • Come on irregardless of his decision it'll be down to the board, and having to reduce expenditure by ten million means any player that another club wants will be up for sale. Those on bigger contracts will be offloaded for pittances if possible, those like Bailey may have to go if people like Andy Gray and Hudson aren't shifted.

It's academic as to what he wants to, and understanable if he wants to go somewhere where they'll be challenging in the champ. He has his positional and tactical weaknesses, but I like most supporters would like to see him stay. The fact that there are so few committed players full blooded players at the club mean he's crucial to us.

The fact that there are so few committed players full blooded players at the club mean he's crucial to us.

And other clubs will see him as the ideal man to put a bit of never say die spirit into their own team of softie nancy boys, who'd rather be focusing on clubbing and fast cars.
  • [cite]Posted By: McLovin[/cite]If we get a good offer for him that advances his career (Prem or upper CCC) and pays well, he will go. Regardless of the syntax he used or if we want him to.

    That's it in a nutshell.

In a poor season he's been one of our few bright spots and if a CCC club offer him and the club the right deal he'll be off.
  • [cite]Posted By: BigRedEvil[/cite]Was reading it earlier sounded like he is off when he first gets an offer.

    Yep.

He's not come out and said he'll stay. He's not said he won't stay, so I'd hope he won't put in a transfer request once we're relegated, but he's not said he won't leave if he gets a good offer.
  • I am Nicky Bailey and i aint going anywhere you heard it here first FACT

Despite his Barnet and Southend history, Bailey is the type of player who just wants to play.
And sure, he's ambitious - why not?

But it's his agent who's going to do the agitating and chase the dollar.

And if good offers come in, Bailey will find it difficult to say no.
But first and foremost, he strikes me as a player who won't be content festering in somebody's reserve team.

He'd rather play - even with us.
    If he has to.

    ;o)
  • Players in relegated teams must hate these questions. If they say that they aren't interested in a move then they look like disloyal mercenaries when they move five minutes later. On the otherhand if they say they want to leave they look like ungrateful mercenaries who couldn't give a toss about their newly relegated team and want to bugger off at the first opportunity, plus they become hostages to fortune. If no decent offer comes in and they have to stay then they know they have to rebuild bridges with their colleagues, employers and fans. A no-win situation all-round.
