Strikers - What strikers ?

Unless we address the problem of our pathetic strike force imho we can forget about a quick return to the championship next season. I think we need two who will score 15 - 20+ goals next season and I am sorry to say we havn`t got one never mind two. The standard is lower I know but does anyone here see what we have on the books including Kandol scoring enough goals ? I know we can expect a turn around in squad next season but it will be difficult to pluck those two strikers we need out of the hat. Does anyone think this assessment is too pessimistic ?

  • Jonjo's brother would get 30+ a season
  • I think that has been obvious all season. If an thing condemns Parkinson it is his signing of Burton astriker who has a record of failure in front of goal. Next season we will need strikers, although there maybe still people who believe Dickson will be the saviour, replace the leaving midfielders and three centra defeners. An early return... look at Leeds and Millwall - we have a few seasons at this level, unless we have a new investor
  • A lone striker will always get flak.

Bartlett who was excellent in the role was unfairly maligned.

I thought Kandol was effective on the whole but a couple of errors stood out (eg the shot he put out for a goal kick in the 2nd half) and the errors are what are remembered.
  • Our lack of quality up front is our biggest problem. We'd at least be within a chance of staying up, if not more with some quality up front. Makes the rest of the team look worse than they are.

In 4-5-1 though the team is set up to get the midfielders scoring, and Kandol (or Burton) holding up the ball, winning headers etc. He's not there to be the main goalscorer.

And yeah without some good strikers we won't finish any higher than mid table in League One. I don't see any of the strikers here capable of guaranteeing 15-20 goals a season.

  • Fleetwood scored again today. Not that he's any better than Dickson.

judging by AFKA's Facebook status update a moment ago - it seems unlikely!!
  • Mcleod and Dickson will be fine as squad players next season but we need to get rid of Grey, Toddy, Fleetwood and not sign Kandol, then somehow find 2 freebies who are superb to lead the line... maybe a promising young kid...Lisbee anyone?
  • May be we should forget strikers and go for a 4-6-0?

The League One topscorers this year are:

    Simon Cox - 25
    Rickie Lambert - 25
    Matt Fryatt - 24
    Gary Hooper - 24
    Jermaine Beckford - 23
    Craig Mackail-Smith - 21
    Lee Hughes - 18
    Aaron McLean - 16

    Is that list that impressive?

In the championship last year, Matt Fryatt got 2 goals in 30 appearances.
Gary Hooper was loaned out to league two teams while scunny were in the Championship.
Lambert scored 13 goals in 46 apps last year and 8 in 36 the year before that, since joining from Rochdale.

I think burton, mcleod and dickson will get some goals next year. I would not be surprise if at least one of them hit 15.
We need another striker, but there's also a few players in that list who have made the step up from league two pretty easily (eg Hooper, Mclean, mackail-smith) so that's a good place to start looking.

there are plenty of changes coming, but lets keep the faith and renew season tickets early so we can snap up our new striker! does this post make me a bit geeky? ;0)

It's possible, but I don't get the feeling from any of them that we know they will definitely score at least 15.
  • out of dickson, mcleod and burton the scary thing is i reckon mcleod would be the most likely to get 15 and he is awful..........how the mighty have fallen;-(

Good post and offers hope at least that what we have might produce but we need a 25 goal man plus another striker to get 15 or so. Not sure we have that combination.
  • not forgetting Jack Lester - clive mendonca;s protege at Grimsby and now at Chesterfield banging them in at 31.

  • After his 2 goals for the ressies against Southampton mid-week I spent the last 10 minutes shouting at the radio that Tamer Tuna should come off the bench for a midfielder to make a 4-4-2. He's been with Charlton since he was 9 ( now 17/18 I think) & with a name like that he's got to have an Addicks future! Can't find many stats on him though, even on the OS.
  • Tuna wasn't on the bench yesterday...it's also asking a lot of a player yet to make his professional debut to step up from our reserves/youth teams and lead the line next season. Sure he'll get a chance and a few games but if he plays regularly it'll be either because he is really is the next Mendonca or more likely because the other alternatives (Dickson/Burton/Gray/Fleetwood) will either be injured, or sold or unable to do the business at League One.
  • About 3 seasons ago when Sheff Wed were promoted from the Third Division, Burton scored 15 goals.

Last season, in just 14 matches for Gillingham, Dickson scored 11 goals.

These players have proved they can finish at Third Division level.
  • Beg your pardon BFR, I must've misheard. I'll get me coat...

Burton isn't going to score 15 goals a season next year, Dickson might, but that depends on the service he gets, who plays alongside him and whether we'll play to his strengths. Who was his strike partner at Gillingham?
  • Dickson: I don't know, BFR.

Burton: it would be interesting to find out how Burton scored his 15 goals in Wednesday's promotion year.
He evidently wasn't playing as a lone forward - so must have had a reasonable service, playing to his strengths.
  • Burton played alongside Steve MacLean (now at Plymouth) and I think Marcus Tudgay (still at Sheff Weds).
  • Fleetwood is the new Mendonca. Shame Parky thought to send him on loan instead of giving him a game where he is needed most.

Neon's record haul was 13 from 44 starts in a promotion winning team.

Saw Steve Gritt outside the ground before the game, we asked him if he was on the bench, he just came out and said no. He explained (as we expected) it was more about the experience of being around the squad.

He's only a first year, so 17 this season. He's been in and around the reserves a few times, as has Lewis Perkins, the other first year striker. Don't think either of them have scored loads, but they've done ok.
