[cite]Posted By: Kap10[/cite]Just watched Championship,it was a goal, dmn linesman, same linesman that gave Fulham the hand ball in Pardews last game the resulted in their equaliser.
Jeez I was right in line and had convinced myself it was offside.
Birmingham were very poor, I spoke to a business friend who follows them, and thought it was there poorest performance in two years plus......
That aside, I thought we played the best I have seen them since mid November, ( do not get to every game mind you) although the subs added nothing for me.
I was amazed that everything revolved around Shelvey, freekicks corners, etc.....his work rate was an inspiration for other players. Wether the pressure was 'off' for us, I have no idea,...... I thought we at least had a defence this game unlike other occassions.
I would like to add that I thought that was probably Youga's best game for Charlton. He actually looked quite composed and for the first time in ages I wasn't concerned when the ball came to him. Well done Kelly.
On a less happy note, although the team played well and is looking settled for the first time in years it ain't gonna last is it ?
There are only 3 probables for next year out of that 11. Elliot, Youga and Sam.
Loans :- Butterfield, Ward, Kandol.
Out of Contract : ZZ
Could be sold : Hudson, Racon, Bailey, Shelvey :-(
It was great to feel that the players and the crowd were united yesterday, and the players made a point of properly applauding the supporters after the game.
Watching Jonjo yesterday i felt lucky to be seeing him play for us.
Brum were crap but it was a bad time to play us really. Our players had the pressure off and it showed.

Yet, had Phillips not very dubiously been flagged offside, Youga would have been sent off again and a penalty conceded.

Yep but we'll forget that decision and say we were robbed by the offside decision on ward ..........................
I really enjoyed it yesterday, and Jonjo was awesome , he never stopped running and was man of the match without a doubt. A performance to be proud of, and the best atmosphere for a long time as well. As for Birmingham being crap, how much of that was down to us playing well ? Credit where credit's due i think.
Great performance, mainly in the 2nd half. The starting 11 played well, with the exception of Kandol who was confusing everyone, everytime he got the ball.
Need to keep this momentum going in the last 5 games, to give some hope for next season.

Hear, hear Bexley.
I remember it always used to wind Curbs up when we beat the good sides the pundits would always say they played poorly and not give us credit.
One of the main causes of a team playing poorly has to be the opposition playing well, surely.
thank gawd for AFKA, the voice of reason. Yep, we have a perfectly good goal ruled offside but Philips was not off and they would have had a pen and we'd have been a man down. Good game, we played well, just shaded it imo. Should've gone two up top ten minutes sooner in another must win game. 3 wins now in thirty games, 1 point from the last nine at home. Parky still tactically deficient for me. Don't go along with we had this player missing, ZZ out etc etc. Our squad was still good enough to be at least mid table. Just seen another good gaol from Fleets against the table topping Bees. Why oh why is he on loan, should be with us so we can see if he's good enough, which in my opinion he is.

Based on what? A few goals for Exeter? From what I've seen on him, he is no better than what we've got. All about getting in behind, using the pace he has. No good in the air, nothing stands out about the rest of his game.
I wouldn't mind him getting a few games to see what he can do, but I don't see how anyone can say he's good enough without him playing for our first team. There's a reason he's not been given a chance yet, and we saw that when Dickson showed just how bad he can be when he's off form.
Any striker looks good if you just watch the highlights...
so he has pace and can score. No good in the air though ? neither was Mendonca. Fleetwood is a natural finisher, you can't coach that. Burton and Kandol are not natural finishers. I am in no way way saying he IS the answer but seeing as we are down I'd liked us to use the next five games to find out whether he has something or not. All we will do now is persist with a player who is not ours and may never, hopefully, be ours when we could be finding out whther a player who is has what it takes or not, that's all.
Fair point and maybe we should be finding out, but is he really any better a finisher than Dickson? He was behind Dickson for a reason.
I'm just saying he's not proven anything yet, he's not scored regularly for the reserves, just think this is another similar situation to Dickson. If he was that good he'd be a lot closer to the first team.
Scoham, looking at that Dizzy McLeod vid again ......... you can see from his positioning, pace, strength, even composure(!) that there's not much wrong with his game that a bit of confidence wouldn't put right.
The other thing, did you notice that apart from conventional crosses from the wing, almost all of the service he received was passed on the floor - his movement off the ball and pace did the rest.
Even at Milton Keynes, they didn't play hoofball - and McLeod thrived. Is there a lesson here that the Charlton coaching team should be learning ..... and is that why a whole succession of strikers underperform at Charlton, despite having decent scoring records elsewhere?
Dizzy McLeod - a cross between Darren Bent and Paolo Wanchop, at least at Fourth division level.
But the vid shows if you give him the right kind of service and play to his strengths, he is well capable of scoring - once his self-belief is restored. And surely that's any decent coach's job?
Yeah that's a good point, playing on the ground probably suits all our strikers, even Kandol. I don't think McLeod score regularly in this league, but he has a chance in League One. That said I think he's playing under much more pressure here, or at least that's how he looks when he has played.
I wouldn't say we play hoofball now, it's taken long enough to cut it down, but there wasn't too much of it on Saturday. I think the players we now have starting midfield are playing a big part in that. We know it's very unlikely they'll all be here next season, very minimum being Zheng leaving, but I hope we can keep trying to play football on the ground next season.
I blame most of the long ball football on Pardew. By the time he went we were very low on confidence, we played direct as we tried to get some confidence back, the game at home against Derby the perfect example.
Particularly, the tactic of hit the lone striker with a high ball - it's not something we generally did when Andy Reid was in the side, but seemed to be the main ploy afterwards.
Losing Andy Reid seemed to be the catalyst of our freefall last season - it was like the footballing brain of the side had been surgically removed.
As a club, we've paid so heavily for that one action. I wonder why we didn't just go out and replace him/his role?
But we've covered that ground enough times already.
Back to Fleetwood - do you remember reading last week that the Exeter manager gave special extra coaching to get Fleets and his strike partner working together and getting the team to play through them?
It wasn't just enough to sign Fleets, throw him into the team, and expect him to score.
More important that team mates discovered how to play with Fleets to the greatest benefit - ie, fit the team tactics to Fleets.
Result 3 well-taken goals in 2 games.
I'd hope that's the sort of thing Parkinson would work on once we sort out our squad, see which strikers go and who we can sign.
We've tried far too many partnerships since we got relegated from the Prem.
From what I can remember, they've rarely worked well, but then they've never had the time (and training as say) to gel. Varney and McLeod had a good game together, Iwelumo and Lita looked decent for a bit, more recently Kandol and Dickson. We've also seen some that were clearly never going to work, such as Burton and Gray.
We need to sort out who our strikers are as soon as possible (if the scouts and Parkinson aren't looking around for what might be available cheaply in the summer, they need to now). We will have to make the most out of the players we will have by playing to their strengths, we did that with Darren Bent and he's a much better striker than anyone we will sign in the summer. In that McLeod video, his weaknesses are covered up by the supply he gets, and the partner he's playing with. In the Plymouth game Dickson was mainly running onto flick ons and getting the ball in a bit of space. Hoof the ball up to him and he has to win it in the air, close down, hold up the ball, none of those things being his strengths. The game against Doncaster he was terrible, not a surprise really looking back, he was up front on his own with Jonjo just behind him.
For me the bottom line is that our attack is a major concern. Surely it would make sense to get our loanees back into the fold asap so that Parkinson can decide whether he wants them or not. If not then get rid or if he does then start working on them straight away. Having them pitch up for pre season before making that decision seems daft under the circumstances.
As you say, Scoham .... it's all about playing players in the right combination, so they are complimentary to each other.
And bringing out the best in those players (and as a benefit to the overall effectiveness of the team) - so you must play to individual player's strengths.
They are professional footballers for one clear reason ... they have ability and can express it.
It's madness - and dumb - not to harness those strengths, yet expect them to perform a role or play in a way that causes them to struggle.
Better to drop that player and replace him with one that clearly can play the way you want him to - playing to his strengths and abilities.
I know it's an old joke now, that Pardew signed players just by watching their best goals highlights on You Tube, lol
But no reason for our coaching team not to dig out those vids once again, and see how these players were once a resounding success at their previous club. And play these players in the way they need to play, in order for them to produce the goods.
To be fair it's what Parkinson is trying to do now. I think he got it wrong earlier on in the season, though perhaps he had a few things to learn about some of our players.
The pressure is off Bailey by playing him out wide, and he also helps Youga out. Youga's had a run in the team, helping him get his confidence back. The midfield all have more freedom with five of them in there
Shelvey is certainly being played to his strengths, giving him a free role and two midfielders behind him is the best way to play him at the moment.
The odd one out is Kandol, who could do with a quick striker next to him, but he's the best one for the job and it's getting much more out of our midfielders.

Based on these, we should have won promotion back to the Prem easily!
