Andy Gray reveals family nightmare

  • no fair point Nigel, i used the wrong term to describe. Sick is incorrect. My stance was also that he shouldn't be playing at the time, i just found it hard and frustrating that a player was (rightly) getting criticised for inept performances, but that the criticisers would not have know that there may have been other factors influencing that performance because they were only judging on what they were seeing.
  • Poor bloke, wish them well.
I know just how he must feel, my wife has been treated for the dreaded C over the past 2 years, thankfully things are now looking good for us. Puts football into perspective I can tell you.
  • And fair play to him for not making his personal trauma public when he was facing constant criticism when trying to escape from it for a bit by playing.

Utmost respect for the man after reading this thread and wish him and his family well.
  • I'd heard one of his family members was ill a while back. I wish him and his family well.

To have devastating news just after a moment of great joy is something I empathise with. My Mum died the day we met our adopted son for the first time. Then four years later my Dad died the day we first met my adopted daughter! Life can kick you in the teeth like that. I hope sincerely that his wife can have effective treatment.
  • Let's hope that his wife recovers, his hip recovers and that we can afford to keep him. If we stand by him and support him, he could still do us proud next season....and I think he'd want to do us proud.
  • I think he's number one on the list of players the board want to off-load due to being one of the highest wage earners at the club. Unless he's prepared to ignore his contracted wages and take a massive pay cut...

He'd surely be a 20-plus goals man in div three. But even if he was ready to take a wage cut, I still suspect it is time for him to move on to happier pastures, in every aspect of his life and career.

Seems like Freddie Ljungberg had the same bizarre injury.

Winger Freddie Ljungberg, who is now playing in America with the Seattle Sounders, has revealed that he spent two years playing for Arsenal and West Ham with a broken hip. (The Sun) (See below link. Thanks Dazzler)
  • come on guys learn to link!

    Linky thingy for Ljungberg
  • It was my girlfriends cousin who was one of the mid-wives that delivered the baby, I was told about it what it happened, quite a dreadful thing to go through. I was sworn to secrecy so it was dreadful hearing some of the shit some of the fans were throwing at him. I was amazed that he played at all, obviously he and Pards must of discussed his family situation and he must have felt that he could play on.
  • Anyone know how mrs gray is now?

I think the South London press article says something about that.

At the time I did wonder why on earth he was still playing/being played. Maybe Andy wanted to play, but what the hell was Pardew thinking?
  • i said on here a few weeks ago Don Hutchison was on talksport talking about Pardew and he said he despised the man because he refused him permission to go to his dad's funeral - he wasn't even in the 1st team at the time at west ham - and when he did let him go insisted on hutch training whilst he was away.

Think that probably says what pardew was thinking - i may be wrong

If Alan Pardew did this I will actively seek him out to punch him, I am the worst critic for players not caring etc, however some rhings are more imortant than kissing a badge.

Andy Gray my lord Andy Graaaaaay
  • The whole episode made my mind up about Pardew a long time before he went. The way he managed the squad was already a joke. I don't know exactly what was going on between Andy and Pardew, perhaps Andy wanted to play, perhaps he was pressured to do so considering our lack of striking options. Maybe that's why we ended up with Wagstaff.

In any case, I thought the club should showed a lot more support to Andy, all was needed was a press release. I'm sure he and his family would have had massive support from the fans.

I think you mean Waghorn, but it just emphasises how the player in and out this season has made it difficult to keep track of who has played for us that we have owned and who is on loan and who has come up through the ranks. Who does Shelvey belong to?

Its a bit unfair to the club we do not know what went on, they may have offered Gray PR support, but he wanted it kept to family difficulties, it may have been his choice.
  • Sorry, I of course meant Waghorn. Yep, fair point Kap.
  • I believe his wife has to have more treatment very soon as the tumour is still in, and growing back. Wishing her all the best.
  • Cheers nm, guys let's remember AGs situation and get behind him and show him what cafc I all about, I have a feeling if he's still around he will do the biz
  • like he gives to sh'ts about football at the moment. would you if you were him?

  • There are times when situations in life can be overwhelming.

In these circumstances, doing something like football can be a blessed relief while you're actually playing.
It gives you (temporarily) a different focus and makes you concentrate on the moment.

Anyway, our club seems to have been very understanding with Andy - and allowed him to make it his own call whether he's in the right mind to play or not.

Nobody would want what he's going through, so whenever Andy does play, then lets give him all the support we can.

Couldn't of put it better myself.

That is absolutely bang on Oggy. People react to terrible situations like this in different ways. Jason Euell I think played pretty soon after his family problems and I'm sure used it as a distraction to take his mind off things. It might be that Andy Gray has been trying to do the same thing himself. Whatever happens, you can only wish a bloke like him well - I know a couple of fellas who knew him when he was younger and by all accounts he is a class act.
  • On the O/S Parky says Gray would like to go back oop North for family reasons. It looks like no strikers are leaving though unless they are replaced.
  • The family reasons could be that his wifes family are currently living in the north east, would make sense i guess.
