Parkinson is in demand
Managerless Charlton have been denied permission to speak to Colchester boss Phil Parkinson.
Parkinson, who guided the U's to promotion from League One this season, was also wanted by Championship sides Derby County and Ipswich Town.
But the highly-rated 38-year-old has been told he is too valuable.
A club statement read: "Whilst recognising that Mr Parkinson must have ambition for the future, it is vital we retain him at this critical stage."
The statement continued: The Us have refused approaches from Premiership team Charlton Athletic, as well as Championship sides Ipswich Town and Derby County - a position which all three clubs have accepted.
"Mr Parkinson has been kept fully aware of all developments during this past week."
He resigned from the Us and a few weeks later joined Hull who paid Colchester £400k in compensation.
[cite]Posted By: ShootersHillGuru[/cite]I started this thread because I genuinly wanted to guage the level of support or lack that PP currently enjoyed amongst my fellow lifers. My conclusion for what its worth is that upwards of 95% want him replaced. This I suspect is the lowest approval rating that any Charlton manager has ever acheived and I include Dowie and Pardew in that. Surely Parkys position is untenable and if we want to unite and move forward again then he has to be sacked.
i'm not sure 95% said yes. haven't 9 or 10 (i've not counted exactly) people said no or don't know? still a clear majority say he should go but not sure as high as 95%.

Probably not that high - and it is only this Board.
You have to remember there are thousands of other fans who maybe don't get the chance to voice their opinions on the net etc. Something the Fans Forum found out on saturday when hardly anyone knew who they were or what they were meant for.
[cite]Posted By: nigel w[/cite]I love reason (1), IMiss : in essence, with their track record Murrray and co. will only go and appoint the wrong man again so we might as well stick with the wrong man we've already got !
LOL - but I do know exactly what you mean...
I dont see a new manager as this uplifting panacea that some do. Its not going to be Curbs or Sven is it. Cant think of 1 Manager who would get universal support. Ince and PDC have been mentioned but would not find favour with all fans and they would have no money anyway. I think it might just be best to sit tight and wait for an economic revival that will spearhead a fresh takeover. Until then we are just treading water and spending Directors money that they didnt really want to have to commit to the club.
[cite]Posted By: Imissthepeanutman[/cite]Something like 5000 season ticket holders didnt turn up on Saturday. But there wasnt that much booing at the end.
Are these 5000 the main booers?
To be fair, i think everyone knows the fate now and aren't quite showing the passion as much as when we could of got out of it.
[cite]Posted By: ShootersHillGuru[/cite]His record at Hull and Charlton is.............................................
Charlton......P 24 W 3 D 8 L 13
Hull...........P 24 W 5 D 6 L 13
And as Charlton Life posters are nothing if not fair
Curbishley Charlton and Parkinsons Colchester records compared
Charlton Curbs P720 W 274 D 187 L 259 38.06%
Colchester Parky P187 W 79 D 54 L 54 42.25%
what's curbs respective record for each division to be really fair
Or you could say how long did it take Curbs to get Charlton out of the Champs versus Parky out of Div 1 with Colchester. Comparable resources and all that.
I feel sorry for Parky and I quite like the fella. But he hasn't been able to turn the team around.
Surely there is a better out of work manager, that would be willing to take the job on. If you have nil income at the moment and are still looking for a challenge, come on down.
The contract would need to be incentivised so that he gets a bonus upon promotion. That goes for the players as well.

Well a few who fit that bill would be Curbs,Pardew,Dowie (maybe even Les Reed). Those names seem familiar.!!!!
yes, what does he actually do that any one of us couldn't do as well, and for free....don't sack him or pay him off, let him train the reserves or something he has to go YES
[cite]Posted By: AFKA Bartram[/cite]Because everyone on here bats on without without a single consideration that behind every decision in football you have to make, there is a financial one that has to follow it.
The reason for Parkinson being given the job is clear, there is zero money in the club and it is losing money now hand over fist.
I agree with that logic 100%, what I can't get my head around though is why then get rid of Pardew because, if the figures bandied about are to be believed, he cost us over £1M to relieve him of his duties. Frankly we might as well have kept him, and spent the money on improving the squad.
Why did Pardew have to go then? Well a big part of it was that he had lost the support of a majority of fans so, from the Boards perspective it was "bugger the cost, we need a change". Are we not there again with Parky? I accept that maybe Parky is more of a grafter and less of a Billy Big B*llox than Pardew and there is even less money perhaps now than before but surely, if the fans vote with their feet as the 6,000 official attendees who didn't turn up on Saturday have already done, then more will follow and that will cost the club a serious amount of money.(Not me I hasten to add, I'm thinking of buying an extra season ticket next year).
Parkys record since taking over, even allowing for the difficulties he faced has frankly been woeful. Yes there have been one or two half decent performances along the way but last Saturday did it for me. In a game we had nothing whatsoever to lose by a somewhat "gung ho" approach, to have started with one up front and no width was ridiculous. The only explanation I can give to it, assuming he hasn't lost his marbles, is that he is hoping for some "solid" performances to bolster his chances of staying in the job. When somebody is more concerned with self-preservation than the interests of those he serves, it's time he moved on.

Just when you are about to slit your wrists/overdose/ or just drink vast amounts of alcohol along comes a Bing or Oggy post and you know you are in safe hands.
I was at Saturdays game sober as a judge and I really cant remember I thing about it. Apparently Gillette Soccer Special was more fun with Hartlepools performance and dear old Jeff.
From what I can recall though is that I would have liked that Charlton team to really have given it a go. I wouldnt have minded 10 rash challenges. 10 yellow cards or even a sending off or 2. Just FFS give it a bit of a go. I know Hudson had a head injury but I would have liked quite a lot of blood spilt in that game. And thats what worries me about Parky if this is what we are going to do in a relegation fight I cant see much of a promotion push. And was Kins as animated as usual. Correct me but I dont think so.
God knows why I'm posting this as he's clearly got to go but in Parky's defence re:Saturday's match alone he started the game with a midfield containing ZZ, JJ, Ambrose and Bailey (our top scorer). That's hardly a defensive line up and he obviously felt that if we were going to score goals it was coming from midfield. The problem for me was that when it obviously needed changing much earlier he waited until 75 minutes to stick Dickson on when the likes of JJ and ZZ were tiring badly. Not that Dickson impressed when he did get on though...
Keep the manager. Last time we showed faith to a manager look what happened. Since then we've become a sacking club and look what's happened. We have a manager who's got promotion from Division 3 before. Forget what's happening now - it's irrelevant. Wait for next season.

But there is no relegation fight. Everyone on here knows we're down and so do they. The players are probably already being mentally prepared for Division 3 anyway.

Jim, I entirely understand where you are coming from and it's a point I have made myself in the past...... there's a but coming......but....
Lets take the examples in the past of when we were in dire straights either on, off the field, or both. Take the time after Mullary and then Craggs went under Hulyer and Lennie was appointed. He had a tough job keeping us up...but he managed it. We then stuck with him and he got us up to the promised land. Take the time when Lennie left and they brought in Curbs and Gritty, no money, favourites for relegation, crap squad, yet they stablised the club and started the building process. Great pointers to sticking with the manager.
Parky has come in, presided over the second half of the worst run in our history, stabilised things a bit - we are not being hammered every week. I thought, genuinely that after the Palace result and the Plymouth, coupled with a couple of away draws in games we could easily have won, that we had perhaps turned the corner and said so at the time. Unfortunately we then lost two home games on the spin, games that were winnable and desperately needed. I felt that the tactics and formations for both those games were wrong. Finally Saturdays game where there just seemed no spark of anything at all in the first half. The second was better, after he changed things but only in contrast to the first. If he is the managerial answer then the Board have seen something which frankly none of the rest of us have seen.
My worry is that we seen to be trying to solve the problem of the one who went before rather than looking at a manager who can get the best out of the resources at his disposal.
Curbs was seen as a frugal, dour and dogmatic, producing boring and flairless football with a team made up mainly of journeymen.
We try to solve that by bringing in the big personality figure of Dowie with a remit to spend more money on players to play more atractive football.
Dowie signed players who were not very good/unfit and/or had no fighting quality, his bolder style of management turned out to be a very unpleasant experience for players and fans alike.
We try to solve that by bringing in Uncle Les, whose more mature and studious style was meant to be an antidote to the monsterous Dowie.
Sir Les, fails to get the pulse racing or the players playing.
He is quickly replaced by the high profile, Pardew with his cocksure attitude and approach. Pardew shakes the tree, shakes the Board for as much cash as he can and then proceeds to spend it on players, an number of whom he doesn't even play. He loves to hog the limelight and chop and change the team, stretching the clubs resources to breaking point and yet leaving the squad hoplessly unbalanced, with too many wingers, too many strikers, no decent right back, and only two centre backs. As a result we ship goals and can't defend for toffees.
He is replaced by the less flamboyant and more workmanlike Parky who likes to play with no winger half the time and those that play have to tuck in. He spends what money there is getting players to cover those positions that Pardew left vulnerable. The result is we become boring and predicable.
In summary we have
Curbs = (seen as) boring replaced by
Dowie = exciting replaced by
Sir Les = boring replaced by
Pardew = exciting replaced by
Parky = boring
Parky has not got a decent record at this level. Fine we are going down to a level he has got a track record of achievement but if we are building for the long-term, can we really believe he'll deliver two or three years down the track?
What we need is a Gary Johnson, or Grayson, or a Martinez or a Clough or a Coppell, or somebody with their ability = Quality

I judge him on results and he has been found wanting.
I agree with others on here who have said that we a complete rebuild from top to bottom. If it takes a few seasons, then so be it.

Parky won 42 per cent of games in div three...
We need a Duckworth-Lewis conversion method here, but I reckon that makes Curbs the winner by a landslide !
