It's undeniable that the free ST offer played a part in persuading many people to buy one this year, what the take-up will be next year is anyone's guess, but it will be a lot lower, with or without gimmicks.
Charlton have been quite innovative with pricing - on our way up the league in the 90s a lot of mid-week games against Northern teams were priced at £5 and kids at a quid, and that along with some good football on display helped build our support. Hopefully next year the club will look at doing that again.
Konch .... according to wiki he came thru west ham's set up b4 joining our youth lot late
Well, this is what Wiki actually says:
".... signed for West Ham United as a boy at the Academy.
Konchesky joined Charlton Athletic as a trainee in August 1997. He became the youngest player to appear in the first team for Charlton (a record which has since been broken) when he played against Oxford United in August 1997 at the age of 16 years and 93 days."
So you're right, OohAah ....but when he left school he didn't join West Ham as a trainee, but came to Charlton. And must have really impressed, as he made his debut for the 1st team just a couple of weeks later, aged just 16 years and 93 days.
As an England international and regular Prem player, I really think we should give credit to the Charlton youth system for nurturing him and bringing him through.
Otherwise, he might have been just another released schoolboy who failed to make the grade.

.
Not totally convinced this is true. All the ST holders at our coach stop would have renewed regardless and thought the BOGOF offer was laughable. 8 out of 10 owners, when questioned, said they would renew for next season. Not bad for Kent glory fans.
[cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]i'm confused oggy whose books was konch on for his learning years 11-16 the same years we had defoe b4 he joined west ham?
Hi OohAah, I was intrigued by your posting Konch's early West Ham connection, so I took the time to check out your Wiki reference, and quoted the relevant part here.
I did acknowledge you as right, as you can see above ...... but developing a released schoolboy who failed to make the grade at West Ham into an international and established Prem player - should be credited to the Charlton youth system.
Your Defoe comments could be equally valid in this context.
So no debate there.

Well for some of that time he was at Charlton WIKI IS WRONG Konch was playing for our youth team in 1996 (Just checked an old Voice) I don't know how long before that he was with us as my other programs are in the loft.
Fact is he is a very competent Premiership left-back who Curbs fell out with and/or refused to play in his best position and shipped out when he was still in his prime.
That's just it though, Kinveachy ...... at Charlton, and what I saw watching West Ham matches on the box back then, positionally Konchesky was woeful at left back - despite his undoubted ability on the ball, quality of tackle, tracking/covering, crossing and dead-ball prowess.
Curbs evidently thought he was positionally suspect also, because he used him to best effect as Left midfield, doubled up with Chris Powell, where his workrate and general contribution made a huge impact towards keeping a tight team unit. Interestingly, Spurs played him once only at Left back, and afterwards invariably played him left midfield, lol
He fell out with Curbs, because he saw his position as Left back - and after he'd made that first random England appearance, saw himself as in with a chance to establish an international place there, despite 45 minutes getting torn to pieces by an Australian winger, lol again.
I've no idea how Konch is getting on at Fulham, as I don't follow the Premiership these days for some reason, lol
But Left back - no thanks. Left midfield - quality.
[cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]didn't realise our youth set up was that good ...
palace have integrated more youth into their first team and appear to be in a better footballing position than us where youth players are concerned and any players come to think of it!
Perhaps if you had seen our victorious squad at Norwich in the Cup you may have changed your opinion Ooh Aah.

I agree with you Oggy. I liked Koch at Left Mid....Never at Left Back.
Got caught out far too often and just didnt have the pace to get back at players once they realised he was out of position and had knocked the ball into the space he had left.

Well they were good enough to beat Norwich.
Got caught out far too often and just didnt have the pace to get back at players once they realised he was out of position and had knocked the ball into the space he had left.
