[cite]Posted By: golfaddick[/cite]I agree with LenGlover...........he tried too hard last night and maybe shoud have passed it off when he tried shooting........BUT
I'd rather have a striker like him who makes things happen than Gray or Burton who's sole job seems to be to play with their ack to goal and lay the ball off to someone else - at least Dickson tries runnig with it ,forcing the defenders back and creates openings.
He has his faults but he evidence shows we have created far more with him in the team than without him.
Actually I'd rather have Dickson AND a player who play with his back to goal and lay the ball off.............to Dickson.
he was over hyped by some before and now he's being over criticised.
There is a middle ground. Good players can have bad games. Poor players can have good games. Players have strengths and weaknesses. There is light and shade in the world.
All good points. He looked last night that he'd be better off with a player like Kandol, Burton or Gray up front, who will hold up the ball and win headers.
In the end we haven't got many other options, certainly not with a bit of pace like he has (apart from McLeod who at the moment can't play, and Fleetwood who hasn't scored goals in League One like Dickson), and we won't until next season. Lets give him a run in the team so at least he's had that chance.
Oh I'm not saying "drop him" Carter, but if he has a total mare of a game like last night, then he's got to resist the temptation to let his head drop, and learn from the experience. As much as we'd all like him to be a hero, what he needs to be first and foremost is a professional. In our position it doesn't really matter who is scoring the goals, as long as someone is, so keeping his head and playing a decent pass is probably more important than having a speculative shot.
Dickson had a disappointing game last night, that puts him on a par with every Charlton player that's pulled on the Red shirt this season with perhaps the exception of Elliot, Racon and one or two players who have played just one game!
He still has alot to prove and room for improvement. His first touch last night was poor.
What hacks me off is that instead of encouraging him, "the blokes behind me" and some others choose instead to p*ss and moan and slag him off. WHAT POSSIBLE GOOD IS THAT GOING TO DO TO A STRIKER WHO IS DESPERATE TO GET HIS FIRST LEAGUE GOAL?
I respect those who have been cautious about him. I can see that both Pardew and Parky would have been concerned about the rawness of his talent. My view which I still hold, despite last nights performance is that in a season where our strikers were unable to hit a cows a*se with a banjo, why not give him a chance earlier.
[cite]Posted By: aliwibble[/cite]The thing that bugged me about Dickson's performance last night wasn't the lack of hold up play, because I don't particularly expect it of him, but more the way he kept having wild shots from distance when there were other players in better positions that he should have passed to. I don't want to slate him for trying too hard, as nothing pisses me off more than players that don't make an effort, but he needs to temper his enthusiasm with a greater awareness of what's going on around him.
In his defence I thought he was getting forced into the wild and rubbish shooting because the midfield wasn't pushing up and because he didn't have the outlet that a lone striker would normally have, on the wings.

Is that down to the player or the way we play though? Gray has proven he can finish & I think if we played a bit of football instead of lumping it up to him then we'd see more goals! Apart from Todorov he's definitely the best finisher at the club.
I think it'll be the same thing as Iwelumo, scores goals everywhere but here! Wolves played good football & he scored bucket loads! Remember how well he played when he had the ball to feet? Best example is prob the 2nd half against Sheff Weds last season!
[cite]Posted By: Mortimerician[/cite]Stunning. Almost everyone who advocated Dickson said he's not the finished article and isn't the answer, but given the poverty of options he is as deserving of a chance as any others. Funny how that has to be twisted.
I'd suggest stranding him up front with no wingers is a great way for Parky to "prove" to those without a shred of understanding of football that us going down is all Dickson's fault.
No, not twisted. Some people were claiming that the lack of an all round game was a myth and or excuse made up by Pardew and Parky.
Others were saying that any lack of an all round game was an irrelevence as he would score goals regardless.
Some people were also claiming that he would most definitely score goals regardless as his record at Gills was so fantastic.
Some people constantly said Dickson was the answer and after Plymouth were saying how the season would have been different if he's started 15 games earlier.
I like him, I want him to do well and wish he's started earlier but the praise he was given was excessive and the expectation set on him extreme.
The only twisting seems to be your last statement that anyone is saying going down is Dickson's fault. Where has anyone said that?
Absolutely correct Wayne Rooney would have look like a Park Player with that level of support and service.
[quote][cite]Posted By: Rothko[/cite]There was one moment when Butterfield whipped a great ball across the 6 yard box, which if the hype about Dickson was right, he should have smashed home, he didn't, he didn't even move.[/quote]
To be fair to Dickson he'd feinted to make the run to the six yard box then dropped back to the centre spot, a la Sheringham, where if Butterfield had pulled it back to him he was unmarked - have a look at the video!!
Ian Wright looked just as raw when he started at Crystal Palace. In fact he looked worse. I'm not saying Dickson will be the new Wright but my gut feeling is play him while there aren't too many other options because he does at least stretch the game and offer a threat. Remember, it's not so long ago that we'd have settled for offering a threat! And we'll need him next year cos he'll be cheap.
PS: As for the Butterfield cross.....Dickson should've been in on that because there was only one place that ball was going and it was never going to be pulled back. Butterfield played it just where John Humphrey would have played it....right where the defenders and the goalie could do bugger all about it. Let's see if Dickson learns from that one.
The big disappointment for me is that, having publicly acknowledged that Dickson's hold up play is not the best, Parky then goes and plays him in a lone striker role for the last two games, with the Doncaster match being a must win game. There are two ways to play 4-5-1. The first is to have your wingers getting close to the striker when in possession and all the midfielders making runs past the striker. The second is to use the exercise to stifle the opposition midfield and hope for set-piece success. No guesses for which of the two Charlton play. In recent times we have tried 4-5-1 with the likes of Gray and Iwelumo upfront (much more physically suited to the formation) and it hasn't worked because of the poor quality of the balls forward, lumping high up-and-unders are easy for defenders.
Getting the side to pass the ball to a red shirt is the managers job and despite the better organisation from Parky he has patently failed on this task. It's not as though we don't have midfielders that are comfortable on the ball or can pick a pass, the defence aren't finding them. I can only surmise that they are being coached to get the ball out of the danger zone early.
I see Dicko is doing well again, is this proof he should be given a decent run in the team or just flattering to deceive again, with promise and no end result?

Only if we play a youthful Wexford side or team's reserves every week...

Obviously just tell him every week we're playing Wexford...
The right answer is : depends on whether we play to his strengths. If he's in a 451 with central midfielders deployed on either wing, then no. If he's playing off a target (Burton, I guess for now) I think it's definitely worth giving him a 10 game run to confirm/deny his abilities.

Though not because I'm confident Dickson will score goals, I just think there's more chance he will than McLeod or Fleetwood.
