[cite]Posted By: Rothko[/cite]I think Matt Spring is a decent player
So do I.
Big problem last night is that we were outplayed by a team who kept the ball. If you keep the ball and move it around, guess what? The opposition cannot do anything other than chase shadows.
Donny are a really excellent team and their style of play we should aspire to.
Spring was worse yesterday than he was Tuesday night. Does seem to want to do the easy things like 5 yard square passes when we have the ball, but if it is tracking back and linking up with the forwards (with the exception of the goal against Palace) he is no where to be seen.
Just like what everybody used to say about Matt Holland.
But with these sorts of player, much of their value is particularly to the team unit which is why they don't stand out often as individuals.
They are the cogs that help make other players into a cohesive unit. They're neat and tidy, don't surrender posession cheaply, hold their position, do the tracking and covering, especially when other players go on a marauding run.
If they are subbed - their absence gets noticed when nobody is doing their job and the tightness of the team falls away.
And invariably they are first name on the teamsheet.
Looks the sort of player to me who ain`t much good when you are scrapping around for points. Spring in a decent side would look ok just like Hughes did for us against lesser opposition. Not sure Division 1 will suit him as the ball will inevitabley be sixty feet in the air most of the time. At least I expect him to chip in with half a dozen goals next season.
[cite]Posted By: ColinTat[/cite]When did Bailey stamp his authority on a game? I like Bailey very much but positionally disciplined and tactically aware he ain't. Bailey needs a calming hand next to him. How was Racon anything more than a bit better than average last night? Spring is there always, and unlike Semedo he can make a tackle and come out with the ball not just pick up pieces like Semedo.
There's so much wrong with this I do not know where to start. Let me try.
You probably aren't aware but Bailey was playing out of position, wide left today. It's not a wide player's job to "stamp"
If you think Semedo can't tackle and come out with the ball you're missing something
Racon can pass, tackle, beat a man and has a great shot. He'll be playing for a much better team at some stage. Had others around him played at his level we'd not have been in the situation.
I don't mind anyone having an honest opinion or moan about our players (there's a lot of material) but it ought to be grounded in some kind of reality. You might as well say I don't like Holland because he's lazy or Darren Ward is bright green

He's played at that level and below.
Also: look at last season's League One success stories Swansea and Donny - both amongst the best footballing teams in our league. This season's top three - MK, Leicester and Peterborough all play better football than many of the top CCC teams too.
Trust me Mortmerician the ball will be in the air a lot next season and the reason Swansea and Donny got out by playing football on the ground is the exception not the rule. We don`t have the coach to get us playing a slick passing game hence I don`t think Spring will be suited to us in division 3.
I always thought when you bring a player into a squad, you should do this to improve it. Spring is not any better than the players already in that squad. Sorry.

I agree while he's an ok player he doesn't add much to the squad that we haven't already got. Holland could do what he's been doing, apart from score the couple of goals he's got. Always thought it was a bit strange when we have more central midfielders than any other position.
Have to agree with SHG on this tale of two Mattys. Can't ever see Spring being half the player Holland was at his best.
I would much rather see Matty Holland playing for us in div three than Matthew Spring. I reckon he'd a great job in the lower leagues and can offer the youngsters some proper leadership and encouragement when the charisma-free lump that Capt. Hudson appears to be is sold to Barnsley or Blackpool or some other Championship side.
I was just trying to point out that Spring seems to have been given Holland's midfield role.
From my own point of view, I've always been impressed by Holland's professionalism and unselfish devotion to his role within the team, and his commumication skills on the park. I'll have to reserve judgement on Spring.

Holland always used to chip in with around a few goals himself before his legs started to go, and still has a decent shot on him.
Many of the present squad are not going to be around next season.

Is someone suggesting Spring could be as good as Holland?
In his prime, admittedly a good few years ago now, Holland was scoring against Germany in the World Cup finals.
IS anyone seriously suggesting Spring compares to that. At his best Spring would rival the illustrious career of one Bryan Hughes
