ZZ's in contention for Saturday - we should play him at Centre Back

edited February 2009 in General Charlton
Our midfield four of Soares, Racon, Bailey and Spring have all scored in the last four games.

Ward and Hudson both have the turning circle of a London Bus and as a pairing will be vulnerable to anyone running at them.

ZZ has played their for China so the position won't be foreign (sorry) to him.

It will be an easier intro back into the team than in midfield and if things aren't working out he can always be pushed further up the pitch.

Please do discuss.

  • Personally don;t think he should be back in, needs be same 11 now baring injury that is.

After his lengthy lay off and foot injury I doubt he'll be divin into any challanges or 50/50's and we need players doing that all day and night out there
  • Put him on the bench.
  • disagree. He'll have to bide his time for a place. Could always play off Dicko away from home as an advanced midfielder.

Or off Kandol. Good idea Large, drop Dickson and play ZZ in a 4-4-1-1. I like it.

    I agree
  • zheng has never cut it for me, racon comming back fully fit means more for the team, zz on the bench at best for me.
  • agree. Surely he should be playing a few reserve games to get his fitness up before being considered for the first team?
  • When fit ZZ has to play somewhere - he's tooo good to leave out.

I don't agree with that. He'd be more efective in the PL with more time and space.

OK ZZ may not be fit for a starting place (and possibly unfair on a winning team) but he is a better player than any of our CBs and would ultimately compliment our lumbering giants.

As for him playing off Dickson I'm really not convinced if only for the fact that I don't think that this will play to Dickson's strengths which isn't, by all accounts, holding the ball up. Dickson needs to play on the shoulder of the opposition back four and (rather like Defoe) will always look better with a big man alongside him and not anywhere near so good as a lone striker in a 4-5-1.

  • Has to be the bench
  • After playing 39(?) players this season I think we need a bit of stability. Keep the team the same.
  • Play him at CB ... ???? Can't we learn the lesson, and use players in their correct position.

He hasn't kicked a ball for 4 months for Chrissakes, so the one thing he aint is match fit.

If Parkinsella has any sense, he'll very gradually ease him back - so as others have suggested to have come off the bench for a couple of matches might be the ideal.

As matches get played, there's bound to be an opening for ZZ - so his chance will come around soon enough.

Ah, that's why parky turned down the chance to get Ronaldo on loan in January....

I take your point Oggy but how do you know that it isn't his correct position? As I say he's played there for China and if he can do it at International level then I'm sure he can do it in the Championship. We're not talking about Matty Holland here after all.
  • Parkinsella.

"I wish I had said that"

    "You will Henry, you will"

    Parkinsella's Red and White Army

I didn't think Parky wanted to be a number two.
  • ZZ when fit has to start imo. One of the few players we have who any other team in this division would love to have in their side.

Okay, AA - ZZ might do very well as the 'sweeper' CB mopping up the 2nd balls.

But as Matty Holland proved, even though he'd played CB a couple of times in the Prem for Ipswich, he was fine pressed into an emergency stop gap situation - but lacking height and physical presence, he was targeted tactically. as Bristol City proved scoring their 2 goals that beat us.

ZZ would I believe, prove equally lightweight as Matty Holland at CB against a big bruising lump in this league.
  • Wouldn't be surprised if he was used as an emergency right back if anything happened to Murty.
  • Why would you change a winning team?

That felt real good to write.
  • I think ZZ is an ok player, but he has never really convinced me. Dont think his coming back will make much of a difference to be honest.
  • [cite]Posted By: RalphMilnesgut[/cite]Why would you change a winning team?

    Yeah exactly.

Bench for now, can bring him in for Spring or Soares if one of them gets injured/struggles with form, or Soares goes back to Stoke. He'd be comfortable out wide and would help make the midfield more solid as it has been without wingers.

Would much rather ZZ anywhere in midfield than defence. Holland can handle playing there, can't see ZZ being strong enough or good enough in the air. Holland wins far more headers and challenges in midfield than Zheng ever did. Much more physical league than when he would have played there in China.
  • And he's no Jonjo.
  • Right now I think ZZ is better than Jonjo.

Keep to a winning side that is well balanced by all means but ZZ is class and if he is fit or close to it should be on the bench to come on and do a job as Scoham says.

He'll be gone in the summer which is a shame but finances dictate that. Before then he has the talent to win games for us in the right team and this might just be the right team.
  • i can see the logic but for me Kandol missed a few sitters saturday but won quite a few headers so i would stick him at Centre back

The final "nail in the coffin" for you doubters is provided by the following questions:

    (1) What number is normally associated with the position of centre back?
    (2) Which of our players wears that number?

    Need I say anymore?

PS ZZ's at 5' 11'' is a whole 2" taller than Matty at 5' 9". And as we all know that two inches can be vital.
  • I still don't see a reason to change it, Hudson and Ward is fine for now. They might not be quick if the rest of the team play well they won't be under as much pressure as our defence has been for most of the season.
