  • Dicko - speaking to sky sports

"I was never taken off the transfer list as that side of things gets taken care of by my agent," he told Sky Sports.

"However, I am fully committed to doing everything I can to help Charlton Athletic stay in the Championship.

"I just wish I'd been given my chance 15 games ago as maybe I could have made an impact a lot earlier.

"But all the players are fully committed to getting us out of this situation.
  • Well Dazzler I'm sure his agent will be in touch with Parky soon then after what his client said on Saturday : )

I agree - it just looks like his agent could be a bit dim
  • Who was that geezer who was banging on about Dickson not wanting to play for Charlton?
  • [cite]Posted By: Dazzler21[/cite]"I just wish I'd been given my chance 15 games ago as maybe I could have made an impact a lot earlier.

Does Dicko post on here... as all of us?
    We seem to all agree
  • i dont know if he posts but i know he reads it
  • [cite]Posted By: nth london addick[/cite]i dont know if he posts but i know he reads it

Dicko - post your thoughts mate!

make it members only if you need to!
  • I think he would be naive to come on here spouting after being given a chance!!

Just keep up the good work and bang 1 in saturday if you are reading ;-)
  • Come on guys give the bloke a break. He's only just got into the starting line up, he's only just asked to come off the transfer list Part of the reason for all of what went on earlier was probably down to clashes of personality. Don't encourage him to blot his copy book. Who knows, Parky and Kins could be members on here as well!
  • That's good advice you two.

If you don't say anything, you can't be misquoted.

Do your talking on the pitch, Dicko.

Just know that we are all behind you and wish you all the best!

  • love the wish I'd been given my chance 15 games ago quotes

who else thinks that if Parkinson had started him at QPR things (the league table in particular) would look very different to what they do right now?
  • "Who knows, Parky and Kins could be members on here as well! "

    Jonjo posts as Uncle

    Dicko posts as NLA

    Richard Murray posts as AFKA

But who is Henry Irving ...... ? It's a mystery.

  • That's better than mine!

Can't say I do. Dicko's brought some enthusiam and flair to the front line and that's no doubt made a big difference, but I think having Racon back, getting Sores and Spring in and finally having something approaching a game plan has given us a platform on which to build attacks for Dicko to thrive in.

If we'd chucked him in at Christmas I think he'd have struggled to have the same impact because the whole team was pretty dreadful back then and we had no foothold in games. Not saying he'd have done any worse than the other Strikers, just probably not all that much better either.

I don't know if you were at Blackpool but he came on there and really struggled to make an impact, perhaps trying too hard to impress, but he looked very naive and even a bit selfish. He seems to have worked hard to do what's been asked of him by the coaching staff and I understand why he felt a bit frustrated but the important thing is he's clearly improved since some of his earlier appearances and has taken his chance well.

I hope he keeps at it and keeps his feet on the ground, cos if he adds the goals to the mix of skill and work rate we saw on Saturday we've got a player who the fans are going to really enjoy watching.
  • Interesting take on it Exile.

Racon has been a big miss IMHO and it must be easier for Dickson in a better balanced side as you say.

Also think that the role Kandol played has been undersold due to the understandable focus on King Chris.
  • Agree about Kandol, he looked the right type of partner for Dickson. Has a bit of pace himself, wins headers and is a handful for defenders with his height and strength. Only one game but with other partnerships up front it's never looked quite as balanced.

Racon has always had a good game when I've seen him, if he stays fit and can keep it up, which I think he can, he'll show that he's one of our best players.

  • Fair points from Exiled Addick and not saying I would totally disagree with them.
However, rather than Blackpool away I was thinking of COventry, Derby and Forest at home where we dominated possession and territory over the three games but came away with just one point, due in a large part to the strikers inability in those games to create a chance out of nothing in and around the box.
I think Dickson would have done that in at least a couple of those games.
    All ifs and buts mind...

We've been a bit unlucky with the long term injuries to Racon and ZZ this year, two players who could provide skill and determination in their game.

    Where's Mr Ambrose...?
I've not heard him mentioned in dispatches recently.

But back to topic - to have 2 hardworking pacy frontmen creating a threat to defences AND a much tighter, more creative and goalscoring midfield, is taking the pressure off what was once a too deep backline.

We're starting to look like a balanced team at last.
  • My take on it Kinveachy is that Dicko might not have made the difference then, based on what I'd seen of him although you say it's all if and buts with Dicko only geeting 10-15mins here and there it was hard to judge him properly, but to my mind, between Christmas and now someone or something has flicked a swith inside Dickson and his game has stepped up a level.
  • I am not especially anti-parkinson but his suggestions that in the last 3 weeks or so dickson has had big revelations that he needs to contribute more and so is now ready for CCC football is nonsense. It just seems to me he is defending himself against accusations he should have played dicko earlier.

Maybe he did need to learn a few things but Parky only played him out of desperation, IMO, and not because he now thinks he's ready. If he has learned things recently it's through actually playing first team football at this level, so he could have learnt it 10 games ago.
  • Whose to say the lack of interest from other Championship clubs during the transfer window didn't give Dicko a bit a reality check that goals alone won't enough for him to make it at this level? He may have taken a little look at himself when he ended up still here after the window closed and decided he was going to try harder at his all round game.

He said in his interview in the programme something along the lines of 'the hold up play etc has always been in my game, I'm just trying harder to make it a bigger part of my game'. It sounds far fetched but a gentle kick up the arse from not getting a transfer away may have been enough for Dicko to wise up a little.
  • [cite]Posted By: Exiled_Addick[/cite]It sounds far fetched

    ... That's because it is!

I don't think it's any coincidence that it had got to the point where Parky pretty much HAD to try him out due to the severity of poorness amongst our other strikers and our complete lack of goals. He is definitely trying to cover himself there. I find it hard to believe people are willing to award Dickson to Parkinson, the bloke who has us rooted at the bottom of the table, bought Deon Burton, didn't play Chris Dickson and says Hudson has been our best player this year.

I think there is a bit of truth on both sides. Dicko did the work (although I still think it was ONE game and he still has a lot more to do) and Parkinsella's hand was, to a degree, forced by Gray's injury.

But, but, but Burton could have started v Plymouth or we could have played 4-5-1 with Shelvey in the hole as has happened and worked well before but we didn't.

Parkinsella has been saying for ages that Dickson needed to bring that other side of the game into his performances so it isn't as if he has suddenly turned around and started to use that as an excuse.

I agree he should have been given more time earlier on and I think he did very well v Plymouth but this is getting really overblown. He didn't score, he had chances he didn't take and he didn't set any of the goals up. He did well and I hope he kicks on from here but it is as if Kandol, Racon and the other 8 players weren't on the pitch the way all the focus is on Dickson

Obviously the real credit for Dickson goes to Pardew for signing him in the first place. Hate him or not much like him you can't take that away from him. Why did we sack him? : - )

[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite]Where's Mr Ambrose...?
I've not heard him mentioned in dispatches recently.

Pretty sure it's a similar situation to Todorov, Parkinson expects more effort from them, he wants to see them earn a place in the team, not walk in because of who they are and how good they are supposed to be.

As for Dickson I don't really believe he's suddenly improved greatly as a player in a few weeks. Parkinson thought we could grind out results with partnerships up front like Gray and Burton, get a 1-0 win, but it never happened. With the options we have now, Dickson has to play. Maybe he has taken training a bit more seriously, cutting out the tricks and playing the simple pass more, closing defenders down more than he used to. I don't think he went from being unable to hold up the ball properly to turning into a player with great hold up play in a few weeks.

And the point about the stronger midfield is an important one, I doubt he would do as well with the midfield we had and the way we were playing a few months ago.
  • Well, Dicko is still getting on the pitch/touch line bollockings from Kinsella, so he's still not playing to orders consistantly enough.

    But 2 things:
    1) Dicko himself said, "You don't argue with Mark Kinsella", lol - so maybe he once did, but has now cut that out?

    2) Exiled said, "between Christmas and now, someone or something has flicked a switch inside Dickson and his game has stepped up a level."

I wouldn't mind betting that is indeed the case. It's not Dicko's ability that's necessarily improved markedly - but his mental approach to the game. And maybe, that's exactly what's now earning him a run in the side.
  • Thank you Oggy, that's the point I was trying to get across. I wouldn't mind betting that the seeming lack of serious interest in his signature gave him a bit a reality check. He comes across as an enthusiastic and generally likeable lad, but he's clearly massively confident, which is no bad thing as long as it doesn't spill over to over-confidence and arrogance. Perhaps he was heading that way a little and recent events brought him back down to earth a bit which has converted into a better attitude on the pitch.

Like I say, at Blackpool he was trying to beat them on his own - dribbling and shooting when he should have been holding the ball up and passing. He was doing that at WBA last season in the cup and he looked really threatening but it was a very open cup tie and he was running at tired legs in extra time, at Blackpool it played right into the hands of the opposition. By contrast, when he came on against Palace he was holding the ball up, laying it off and after that great bit of skill on the touchline he crossed instead of shooting and it was the same on Saturday. It's not much evidence to go on but it suggets to me he's had a rethink about his approach somewhere along the way between those two games.

The skills have always been there, he just seems to have learnt a bit about how to apply them properly at this level.
