Wright , Curtis, Kinsey..

edited February 2009 in General Charlton
Ive spent some of this eve looking through my Dads, old programmes( 1969-70 ) This defensive trio, who I can just about remember, played for about 26 consecutive home games. Its an incredible contrast to the amount of defensive changes this season. I guess thats what you call a settled side. I wonder when will next have one of them ?

  • Campbell Went Reeves Peacock Moore Tees Treacy Gregory

    Not a bad side
  • finished third and only one point behind Palace in the 68-69 season, as Derby won the title under a certain Mr Clough, some great crowds that year, 30K against Derby when we beat them 2-0 at home
  • Also remember Paul Hince, Ricky Marciello, John Kiers being involved around that time, the all red kit and didn't we lose the first game that season 3-4 at home to Millwall ? maybe the following season.........
  • WE certainly had a settled side that year and as I recall it only really changed because of injuries.

Absolutely Tel. I remember the Derby game in particular. I was never a great fan of Charlie Wright but he did play well that season. Paul Went was a great player sadly injured much of the time. Bob Curtis, one of my all time hero's and Kinsey really at the end of his career. Campbell was a great player with Gregory and Moore in midfield who were also excellent. Matt Tees and Ray Treacy were a potent force up front. Sadly Tees fell out with the manager and left the next season and we never replaced him. Eventually being relegated in 70/71.

It was Luciano Masiello...(Lucy as he was known) he only played 6 games.
    5 in 69/70 and 1 in 70/71.
Scored 1 goal...in The FA cup V West Brom...we lost 3-1...ah well nice to see nothing changes!
  • yes that team roles of the tongue. believe it only actually played a handful of games together because of injuries etc.

other names included in the team that year, Bolland, King, Firmani ( in a match against La Gantoise ) also notice Theo playing against us for Northampton town !
  • I remember the La Gantoise game - 2-0, I think. Who remembers the Apoel Nicosia game when we won 9-0 and two of the Apoel players had their glasses broken.

I think Theo played against us for Northampton together with Graham Moore in 66-67 . The final home game that saw Northampton Relegated . They had plunged from 1st to 3rd ------------

Bolland came from Norwich the next season only played a handfull and was shipped out to Millwall
I always wondered what went on there .

  • Then there was utility man Denis Booth ...... our regular no.12 alternating on the bench often enough with centre-half Johnny Kiers.

Booth could play fullback or midfield ball winner - but I remember when he started a few games with the no. 8 shirt, he grabbed himself a handful of goals.

Then there was the past-his-sell-by date ex-West Ham fullback Jack Burkett, nice touches but so slow.

And late in that 68-69 season, Firmani signed the ageing Ipswich centreforward legend Ray Crawford, who was a quality finisher but thrived only on a decent service. Crawford was last heard of scoring a hatrick for 4th Division Colchester to knock Don Revie's mighty Leeds side out of the FA Cup.

17 year old keeper Ron Willis played 60 mins of his debut against top of the table QPR (67-68), before ending up in hospital and never played for us again.

17 year old midfielder John Stenson made his debut in the same match, also never played for us again - and has been a sports reporter on the Sunday Peephole ever since.
  • the legend Charlie Wright
  • Luciano Masiello.
Now the Chairman of the Charlton Athletic former players association.
  • It's Tony Stenson - John's brother- who is the journalist; he began his career in the same training emporium as Steve Rider and Tony Rickson.
  • My pal played for Millwall reserves against us at the Valley. He was up against Paul Went, one of my heros. Anyway, my pal sussed that Went was weak on his left hand side and went past him quite a few times to my amazement and scoreda tidy goal! Went became a very solid player for Cardiff, and maybe Portsmouth, one of the best players not to play in the old 1st division. (My mate never made it at Millwall and ended up at Dagenham.)

Interesting that in Keith Peacock's book he felt the
signing of Crawford was a reason that Charlton didn't gain promotion in 68/69.
Seems he was on a lot more dough than the rest of the team.
I recall Crawford with Ipswich before he came to Charlton as quite a potent striker.
But he seemed well over the hill when he arrived.
That 68/69 season always sticks out as one of the best , the highlight being the FA Cup replay
at Selhurst park on the Mud bank above the concrete terracing at the Holmesdale Road End.
The Ground seemed full of Charlton and sliding down that bank together with 10'000 others
doing 'Knees Up Mother Brown' on liquid mud , would have the 'Health and Safety'
    Freaking out .
Also for Palarse to say thery are not our rivals is nonsense. That season
what with the Cup games and promotion rivalry it was full on.
For the record Charlton that year were a real footballing team with Campbell and Moore
in midfield a class above anything in the division.
Palace under Bert Head were an absolute team of kickers , and they wore the
most disgusting claret and blue striped shirts with YELLOW collars.

Cortina or Escort Line ? Sorry fella to good to miss:-)
  • Palace away in the replay was my first ever away game.....the next away game came rather quickly, when we were beaten 2-0 at Highbury....the tube train broke down for about 10 minutes on the way to the game.....the carriage was heaving with Charlton fans. I was lucky enough to be near one of the doors that separated the carriages and could stick my nose out for some fresh air.....I know its a cliche, but I swear my feet hardly touched the ground when we walked up to the ground....my uncles ans aunt had heard that there was going to be a fair bit of trouble in the ground, so we sat in the posh seats....wonderful memories for an eight year old......and there was an almighty punch up as well. Ive still got programmes from both games.....the Arsenal one was dead posh and had colour photos.....
  • Yeah I remember that well my mates Dad had a mate 'in the print' and we got seats at Highbury.
Charlton on the North Bank , I remeber walking through a deserted City from Cannon St. to get a tube at Bank and then seeing Charlton fans everywhere.
We did OK too and Matt Tees came close at 1-0 but just a game to far I spose.
I remeber Firmani saying 'we can concentrate on the league now' cliches ain't what they used to be :-)
The Mercury did a picture of the players on a cannon at Woolwich Barracks too.
  • Matt Tees hit the post with a diving header.
I can still see it in glorious technicolour in my minds eye.

Arsenal were loaded with 'star' names like Bob Wilson in goal, Pat Rice & Sammy Nelson at full back, the big ginge jock Ian Ure at centrehalf alongside sweeper Peter Storey, Geordie Armstrong on the wing, Jon Sammels and George 'Stroller' Graham in centre-mid but the name of their centreforward escapes me .........

55,000 crowd, if I remember. It seems just like yesterday.

Still got the programme somewhere. What an adventure for a 9 year old lad!
  • Too right, Bing.

I couldn't believe we were actually playing at Highbury and looking around me, to be part of such a huge crowd.

In time honoured tradition, we still lost 2-0 - but Firmani's team gave a good account of themselves and showed why we were promotion challengers.
  • saw almost all of the home games that year....was my first "proper year" of harrassing my Aunt and Uncles to take me....I dug the progs out last night.....made me laugh really....it was written in such a different way in those days....very very old fashioned.

The red programmes with the CAFC sword roundel in the centre! Some with the Football League Review inside them. I've still got a load somewhere!

Not sure why that picture isnt appearing...

    Here is the 67 version
  • Got a load of old progs 2nd page in would have the team which I used to meticulously change as players were subbed or not playing as well as goals and who got them. Then it moved to the back of the prog and the price went up to a shilling :-)
The Arsenal game was a big one and I can remember being nervous about it. Think it was my first away game. We were outclassed early on but we had our chances but didn't quite make it on the day. Didn't like the ground as I was lower than the pitch.
    Happy days :-)
  • and the Arsenal programme 25th January 1969
  • 67/68 was my first season as a fan.

Paul Went, Keith Peacock, Matt Tees all awe inspiring to this wide eyed young lad at the time.

Ray Treacy joined the same season and was my absolute hero, it broke my heart when he left.
  • Ray Treacy and Alan Campbell were my first real Charlton heroes

Strange but true...My Uncle Ray who is just a few years older than me, his hero was Harry Gregory and he said, "When I have kids of my own, I will call my son Gregory" referring to Harry of course.....funny, but that stuck with me....Ray never did call any of his kids Gregory......but my first lad was named Greg in his honour.
