Changing the Valley atmosphere

edited February 2009 in General Charlton
My seat at the moment is at the front of the North Upper, but i've also spent time up by the drum, and also in the East.

One thing is clear from comparing is that there are a fair amount up the back that make plenty of noise, but it gets completely lost because it is too distanced and too high.

With it looking like there will be large empty sections next season, would it be a good time to try and re-adjust what is the most atmospheric point of the stadium so that it has more influence on the pitch, and in turn coaxing those in other parts of the ground to join in ?

is this something for the Target 40k comittee or the Fans Forum to consider ?

Would those like me who do like to be vocal in games be interested in trying to form another vocal section other than the back of the North Upper ?

  • North lower would be good except if like me and your over 6 foot, there is no leg room at all after the match you end up walking up floyd road like youve a nasty case of ricketts... No wories for you then AFKA... ;-)
  • I would suggest from a banter point of view this area should be in the East Stand in the Block next to the away fans.

I'd love to, but I see moving out of the Covered End is difficult for many people who consider it "home".

The thing is - you only need a couple of hundred people all together to get it to work.

Definately something for the Fans Forum to look at in my opinion.
  • east stand woudl be good. and then we can rally the club to make that plot of wasteland before you get to the exits a smoking area.

    get fekking hundreds moving then.

I sat there in our first few Prem years and although the South had some home seats then for big cup games it was really lively with banter, the 3-2 loss to George Graham's Spurs being one particular memory. We gave them loads at 2 up and then they burried us - on and off the pitch!
  • Great post, AFKA.

I do welcome constructive suggestions and ideas like this.

After all, it's OUR club - and collectively, we can influence and make an actual impact in so many ways.
  • I think its a good idea. The only place in the ground for really good vocal support is the South Stand......I dont think they will entertain that, albeit I really think it could be done by using two or three sections of the West, entering and exiting from the existing turnstiles, blocking off the south stand and using the Bartram turnstiles to enter/exit....bit of fence moving, lose a few rows of seats for segregation in the west and jobs done....a very simplistic view, but if there was a huge demand and a proper plan, I think it could be done. As regards to the club wanting to investigate it, well thats another matter.

Im happy to voice whatever the consensus of opinion is at the next forum meetings, and we have a rep on the 40K committee, Gary Davenport....I'll speak to him about it.

    Let's hear from you lot.............
  • I stand at the back of North because its the only place with any sort of atmosphere at the valley, but..

with our stewards could you get away with being loud closer to the front, and stand the whole game???!! And how you can be loud from siting down all game is beyond me, i generally can;t contain myself

I think we'd all be escorted out, that or have a photos taken and refused entrance on future home games for 'standing and making noise?!' sorry guys thats not what we expect at Charlton!!

Shocking that members of the Fans' Forum don't know the names of the stands :- )

Good Idea to get Gary to bring it up at the Target 40k meeting and Sacha can raise it at the Safety Advisory Group as the Police will have a view.

I think that if you want a new "singing" area then the southern end of the East is the best option assume the JS Stand will remain for away supporters.

Beauty of it is that people can buy tickets anywhere in the East and move to the end section if they wish. Would have to consider the Schools etc who are often given seats there.
  • target 40k... stick it in room 101;-(

  • you can try all you like AFKA but most in the East wouldn't make a noise even if you put a rocket up their arse.

my father, aged 77 with a dodgy ticker often gets the East going and will keep singing until others follow - which is painful as he is often ot of tune!
  • If you stand at the front of the stand the noise won't travel that well.

I would be up for moving to a different area, I guess the East Stand block A/B ?
  • Yes, I am sure OohAah would be willing to sit with the usual 10 or so herberts in hoodies and tracksuit bottoms calling everyone within earshot a C*** whilst giving the Away End the old *nescafe*.

Also, stick the schoolkids in the directors box and make them suffer more.

See how they like 90 mins of some herbert kicking the back of their chair!

That's without doubt the best idea but would people be prepared to pay extra as aren't season tickets more in the east stand than the north?
  • Ive already written to the other forum members to make them aware of whats being discussed. Maybe if there is enough interest, Dan could make up a poll......maybe following this up with a poll on the os website and in the club programme

I think there is only a slight increase in the wing blocks.

I was out in Amsterdam the other wknd and went to watch Utrecht, excellent atmosphere, crap football

    The reason for good atmosphere;
1 - although tickets assigned sets were told by stewards to just sit where we wanted
    2 - NO 1 SAT DOWN
3 - All the ppl from back even moved forward so the stairs were all full
4 - Drinking and smokin in stand, and not as though every1 was drunk and roudy, just meant every1 stayed in stand not on concourse
5 - sad but had a guy with a loud speaker starting chants, crowd follow
6 - Everyone 'banged' the seats, really intimidating when 20,000 ppl all bang there seats infornt in unison
7 - EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE SHIT AND MIDTABLE AND THE COWRD WINGED BEFORE AND AFTER GAME, DURING GAME 100% SUPPORT OF TEAM (and there were some comical defending out there, made us look like champions league standard!!
9 - there was only 2 groups of turnstyles for the home end behinfd goal, so much queing and chanting outside of ground on way in
8 - oh yeah there was some goals aswel, was 3-2 within 23 min!! - although finished 3-3, god knows how, some woeful finishing

The Coward winger .......Rommedahl playing for them?

Or maybe just simply, "Crowd whinged" is that Scruffs?

    ;o)
  • spent the first few years after it opened in the east up near the away fans ,until i got banned ;o( !! were some of the best times at the valley. The atmosphere / banter was always great
  • Very good idea. Raised early enough to perhaps get it decided before next season too, i guess?

East stand sounds like the best idea.
  • I think this is an excellant post and something I would like to contribute too, I was going to comment on the atmosphere, or in my opinion lack of it during the Palace game but after the win I did not want to put the dampers on it on here.

I sit in the East Stand pretty much level with the half way line approx 8 rows from the front, in effect when I look to my right I am "Looking Up" at the upper north stand, I find it hard that more of the people up there do not join in when the singing starts, you have the block in the corner with the drummer who all seem to stand and sing etc, but then the further you travel across the stand the less the standing, singing and arm waving becomes, why???

Surely if the guy next to you is giving it his all with "Valley Floyd Road" you feel the need to join in, my days are over from when I used to stand in the covered end but during the "Operation" Middleborough & Blackburn away games we found ourselves in amoungst it all and sang our bloody hearts out.

I know things were tense against Palace but I was surprised at the lack of support as early as the beginning of the 2nd half, apart from a bit of "Come on you reds" for the odd corner you would have thought we were sitting in mid table security and all waiting for the season to end, to be fair to the East stand we had a guy near to us that started a few songs and we all joined in.

I hope this wakes a few people up for the remainder of the season because whilst we are not being treated to the football we deserve we can at times be the 12th man, and lets face it at the moment with the stikers we have we might have to "Suck" the ball into the net.

Good luck with taking this to the club but I feel that will all be for next season, lets stand up and sing now before it is too late.

And before you all sluaghter me I know in my hearts of hearts it is already too late, but it aint over till the fat lady......
  • [cite]Posted By: eaststandmike[/cite] you would have thought we were sitting in mid table security and all waiting for the season to end

I've been told that we are sitting in bottom of the table security and waiting for the season to end.
  • If we sit in block B and we play a team with a big following in the FA Cup, don't they get our seats?!

The back two rows have got tons of North Lower have got loads of leg room, it's like club class! On the other hand there are a few row halfway down that must have been squeezed into the old walkway that are imposible for anyone over 5 foot to sit in.

I still think that abandoning the North Lower F,E & D blocks was a mistake when the new tier was added. If you have a good group of singers bak in that area it is more likely to spread round the ground and is closer to the pitch and players tunnel (if that makes any difference)
  • I would suggest that the singers take one of the corners, low roofs, close to the east stand, decent view.

    my view as well.

the best would be the north east, i see in my mind that being the most atmospheric point, and could spread easier sound wise into the east, north lower and north upper.
