I think we have to try and put ourselves into the players shoes.
As Henry says, if a Palace rag asks him a Palace angled question, then expect him to tell them what they want to hear. Especially as he's evidently been a well-known Palace supporter since boyhood.
He has to be professional though, he knows that ........ they'll be plenty of scouts from other clubs monitoring him for the future at the game - and they'll be assessing his character as well as his footballing ability.
He's only a young player still - and looking to make his mark on the game.
So he'll want to be seen in the best light for the sake of his own professional future.
That's the theory at least. As I said, put yourself in his shoes.
All very well respecting an old team. What he did was disrespectful to his new team mates and the Charlton fans.
As a Charlton fan who was at that game I didn't feel it was in any way disrespectful to me. Exactly the opposite in fact.
I've never asked the Charlton players if they felt what JFH did was disrespectful so like you I have no evidence to state categorically that it disrespectful or not. However as Darren Ambrose did the same thing when scoring against Ipswich I would guess that he for one didn't.
But as a Palace fan since the age of eight, Soares must be acutely aware of the sensitivities, so what he said was dumb at best.
What a season. Millwall probaby going up with the help of one of ours. Gills quite possibly going up ( maybe wth the help of Dickson). Palace aiming for the play-offs. And Charlton going down with a player who doesn't even want to celebrate if he scores for us and will be going back to Stoke in a couple of weeks, anyway.
Next season, Palace and Millwall lording it over us , while we're quite possibly in the same division as Gillingham for the first time since , I would guess, 1980-81..
World turned upside down, indeed! That's the context in which people are possibly being over-sensitive.
I was in corporate hospitalty with a bunch of Chelsea fans when JFH 'apologised' for scoring for Charlton at Stamford Bridge and they all thought it was hilarious. When they had finished laughing, they also conceded that he was bang out of order.

So that's Prawn sandwich Chelsea fans' view. So what.
Rather than being bang out of order a lot of Chelsea fans in the "cheap" seats applauded him so they clearly saw it differently.
I was with Charlton fans. None of them even commented on it.
Henry, you might be perfectly happy to see a Charlton strker apologise when he scores for us. I am not and I never want to see it again - especially against Palace. I am sure many Charlton fans feel the same.
If Darren Bent scored against us in the 5th round of the Cup and didnt celebrate with his Spurs teammates but just raised a consoliditory (sp.) hand to the Covered End you'd think that was wrong?

Fair enugh if YOU see it that way. However you have stated that it was "disrespectful to Charlton fans" and now that you are "sure many Charlton fans feel the same way". Did you do a survey then or is that just an assumption.
Just the evidence of this thread shows that there are some Charlton fans that don't find it disrepectfull.

Funny how people see things differently!
No, I think he was 1. doing his job for his club, Spurs and 2. Showing respect to his old club and fans and I, for one, would think even better of him for it.
Of course, the proper reaction in order to show the proper respect to the Spurs fans who pay his wages is to run to the Covered End cupping his ear and kissing his Cockerel.
We Charlton fans wouldn't mind as he's only showing respect to the Spurs fans. Wouldn't we?
If he scores and doesn't celebrate - or even worse, as you say Ledge, is apologetic about it - you then have the Palace fans singing ''He'd rather play for us!'' Which is exactly what Chelsea fans said when they'd finished applauding JFH at Stamford Bridge.
On the other hand, to be fair to JFH, I know that Scott Carson said that in the same match Jimmy told him which way to dive to save a penalty. Can't remember the Chelsea penalty taker (Lampard?), but the advice was bang on and the penalty was saved.

So f***ing what -
nothing wrong with pro footballers showing a bit of respect to his old team even if it is Palace.
And if he scores its with our SHIRT on and agaisnt them - we'll do the celebrating for him....
Players damned if they do somethimes and damned if they don't - let's put things into a bit of perspective here considering the trouble between the fans previously - doesn't need any more hype than usual
What Ledge says.

Its all a bit harsh it seems he was asked a question and answered it.
I don't believe for one second it will put him of look at our lot when they was booed they still got on with the job in hand ;-)
Spot on. The rest of the answers about how much he likes it at Charlton, etc, etc will have been ignored by the CROYDON ADVERTISER as it is PALACE paper so will write the story from a PALACE angle.

Again, if we were doing ok in the league we wouldnt bat an eylid at this.
But because we are so poor at the moment everything riles us.
If indeed he does score the winner against them and doesnt celebrate will we really care?
Not one little bit. Didn't players in the "good" old days just shake hands and wander back for the re-start. Did that mean they didn't care?
Rather him not celebrate than players spending hours planning celebration routines, silly dances, handcuffs, letter As, swinging babies and other bollox
Given the way he played on Saturday, I really don't think we need to be worrying about what he might do if he scores. As bad a debut as I've ever seen (although played out of position)
[cite]Posted By: Curb_It[/cite]no idea oggy. Who cares - if only he would score. ... in fact i've not even read the link so fug knows what this thread is about at all, at all.
LOL Curb_it.
Agreed, if he scores ..... GREAT!
Goal to Charlton.

Play Wright, Wagstaff or dare I say it, Dickson, players who are desperate to pull on the red shirt...
Funny how people see things differently!

But if Soares scores and just runs back to the half way line and gets on witht he game then so be it -
If he does a JFH then that's different.

Bang on!
It'll be ME doing the celebrating !!!
£5 on Soares and Hudson it is then
I can only recall him turning away with a scowl on his face, even at Chesterfield.
Well apart from the brace v Chesterfield, I can only remember two - Chelsea and Boro!
However given that fact is he really in the frame of mind to sweat blood in the cause of arguably their greatest rivals?
I think not and frankly would rather see someone like Wagstaff out there giving his all even if he is not as good.
Nothing wrong with that either.
What on earth are people getting worked up about. .... ?
If he scores, fantastic!
We can do the celebrating .
LOL Curb_it.
Agreed, if he scores ..... GREAT!
Goal to Charlton.
What's the problem?
