Isn't this starting to feel like it could be fun?

edited January 2009 in General Charlton
I know we've all had a horrible time but, starting from now - right now - is anyone else getting the buzz that the adventure of the next 20 League games could be absolutely blinding?

New year, new blood - what are we made of?

Think of the fun we'll have getting out of this horrible mess. It will be as good as Wembley 1998.

Not quite but i know what you mean!

I am a lot more excited this year than I have been since a similar time in our last Prem year. I just hope the end result is different!
  • could be Dave, i said at the start of the season we could be like southampton last year all on the pitch celebrating staying up got shouted down for that but could well and hopefully not come down to the last game, Up the Addicks..
  • Don't know about 'fun', Dave. That might be going a little far. But I am certainly beginning to think that we might just be able to salvage some pride - and that will do for starters!
  • It aint gonna be pretty or without stress to the max but we're gonna survive....and that's my take on it....for better or worse my Lovely Red Boys are gonna do it for me....FOR US!!!
  • Yep much better than boring mid table CCC ;-O

Ha! My 30 year old son was just looking over my shoulder at this thread - and as he read it , he said "If I want some fun I think I'd be better off in a brothel than down the Valley, Dad".

No idea where he got that sort of attitude from. I certainly didn't bring him up like that !
  • when my beloved palace was in a) administration in 99/00 and b) almost got relegated at stockport in 2001 I can assure you fun it was not

i don't envy you at the moment
  • I'd much rather get behind the team, help create a new positive energy and take this relegation dogfight by the scruff of the neck!

If we do subsequently fail, it wouldn't be for the want of trying - and we'd know that we'd given it our best shot.
That would give us pride in ourselves as a club.

But we've 20 games and 60 points to fight for. It's still very much in our own hands.

This buzz that's growing is a new energy rising. Let's harness it now.
It's gonna be a lot more fun than just limply giving up and moaning.
  • It shouldn't be, but its all about tomorrow. Win and we've pulled in a rival and up and running, with real hope.

Lose, and we'll have had the sails properly knocked out of us, and i think will find it hard to recover.

Biggest game since Blackburn away, and i'm starting to get nervous.

    Thanks, David.

We don't envy you at any moment.

Ha, so pragmatic AFKA. Don't sit on fences, by any chance ...?

    ;o)

Don't think the worse - it's all there to play for.

    C'MON YOU ADDICKS!
  • David Sylvian a palace fan? Wwho'd have thought it!

At least it's not become an "operation" game.... :o)
  • this stopped being 'fun' 17 games ago.

Once we got back fron Blackburn, we went out for a meal at the Chinatown restaurarnt down the road from us. Hadn't been back since, until last Sunday, when I felt the urge to go there again in the hope that it might break the hoodoo.

    Perhaps we'll find out tomorrow?
  • Anything's worth a try!

Ain't that the truth. Dave for Fans' Forum Rep I say!

I can't call it fun but it might just be exciting, nail biting, edge of the seat stuff. Bring it on.

I think it was Jerome Thomas who said

Do not go gentle into that good night,
    Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
  • Gulp. I read that to my father when he was dying in 1997...
  • Was it really 'our' Jerome Thomas who wrote that.

I didn't think he could read.

    ;o)

Maybe it was Aswad then. Someone called Thomas anyhow.

  • back on thread.........

yep, i'm really buzzing today. Work situation has improved and now know my new employers come Feb 1st.

cafc situation has also improved - 2/3 good signings and none of this over the hill, used to be quality bollox wev'e been used to (starting with JFH and ending with Gillesdpie & Burton)

all we need now is a couple of forwards who know where the net is & don't mind roughing up the oppos back 4. Would like to see Dickson given 3 or 4 games FROM THE START but that ain't going to happen.

PS - kids off to their nans for the weekend - we still have the little 'un at home but the other two are gone until sunday pm..........a lie in awaits me-thinks.
  • Blimey, Golfie happy and almost converted, Rosy Specs the new religion.

    Onwards with the evangelism.

Now where's GH. Coming to get ya, mate!

    ;o)
  • Show no mercy, Oggy. Beat him relentlessly with your tickling stick until he cheers up!

David, In 1984 we were 5 minutes away from being thrown out of the league after have gone bust and been wound up in the high court! I can assure you nothing this season or any before or since has come close to that in terms of brinkmanship and tension.
  • i remember that night in 1984. i sat in the dark that night with the radio on in my bedroom (only 12). i was sobbing as the presenter had been talking about the demise of a ONCE great club etc etc. anyways at about 23:55 an announcement was made saying that we'd been saved, and Cahrlton Athletic 1984 was born. another tearjerker, as are most of my early charlton memories. shirtliffe double was only other high point for many years. i hated growing up around big clubs like Wednesday and Leeds. how football clubs rise and fall hey. but so long as there is a charlton i will support them. going to hillsborough next week. couldnt bring myself to go to the lane. respect to all those still going every week. nothing beats the excitement of a relegtion scrap for tention. promotition will have to wait for another season.
  • I tell ya wot, if we manage to get out of this it will be up there with the best of them.

I will go F*CKING MENTAL ala play off final, nothing better than thinking you've well and truely lost it to come back and do it......... I hope we do it so much i cant put it into words, honestly i cant, i got butterflies now!?
  • 1) 20 games and 60 points to play for.

    2) Fresh blood coming into the team, and a bit of backbone, grit & determination.

    3) It's in our own hands, despite the Gloomsters talking us into the footballing grave.

C'MON YOU ADDICKS. Unite together and we can save our season!

I didn't know that about 84 - I just remember you pitching up at ours in late 85 and playing us at selhurst about a week after
we had some close calls with going out of existence in 99/00 - and it was harsh
in the context of that, a relegation fight (even to the third division) is unpleasant but still a walk in the park
i'll watch your result closely today - very very very big game for you

Dave - would you care to rephrase the heading on this thread?

And you might want to use the edit facility to do something about this , too:

"starting from now - right now - is anyone else getting the buzz that the adventure of the next 20 League games could be absolutely blinding?''
