Apparently league rules say you have to give the attendance based on tickets sold not how many go through the turnstiles.
We were talking in the pub after the game about how it would be good if season ticket holders boycotted Mondays game, and then Charlton have announce an attendance of 20,000+ to an empty stadium
How many season ticket holders do we have? If shedloads of them didn't turn up, then bussing in the kids would make the gate look respectable, even if the attendance wasn't.
The announced figure announced is tickets distributed ... season tickets, etc. There were 7,500 no shows, apparently. Which should speak volumes to the board.
It was the second highest in the Championship last night. About 900 less than Wolves v Derby.
Do we have any reason to believe the way Charlton count the attendance is different to the other teams in this league?
I dont take any pleasure in the decline in our club and personally given our plight have been surprised how the attendance (declared or actually in the stadium) has held up. I take it as a relative positive.
the figure includes stewards as well. the way i see it is to keep the books looking good. should some one want to buy the club how good does it look that for a freezing cold december night right near to xmas and us being bottom of the league there were still over 20000 people in the valley!! or any perpective manager seeing 20k plus a good base to work on. if we get a decent new manager i would expect 22k plus for the derby game.
There was if I recall an article in the programme some time ago which explained how the attendance figures are calculated and stated. I dont this club is trying to be deceitful and is probably consistent with other clubs.
Does anyone know if CAFC do declare the attendance figures different to other clubs or is just that we have a relatively high season ticket base which makes our situation appear worse/better depending on your point of view?
Pretty damn sure under the Gliksten era the attendance figures were woefully adrift for tax/revenue reasons.
The attendance doesn't include stewards - or the players and officials!
It does include the directors and staff, who have season tickets, and reporters but not photographers. In other words, the key point is that a ticket is issued against a stadium seat within the 27111 capacity. We do not sell or count the same seat twice.
Apart from the time we spent at Upton Park, this has been the basis for the published attendance since 1989/90 at Selhurst Park, when Palace started requiring all spectators to purchase tickets before approaching the turnstiles. The immediate effect of this was a significant increase in the attendance figure.
The official attendance figure we publish is the one we declare in the match return to the League and we break it down by category, not least because we have to pay a levy to the League so the sale figure has to be accurate.
The reason you can get such a large discrepancy is that we have an unusually and artificially high number of season ticket holders as a proportion of the people attending compared to other clubs. The effect of the pricing policy and the incentives - whether that was scarcity of seats for big games in the PL or the free offer in the CCC - has been to persuade a group of people who would not otherwise want a ticket for every game to buy season tickets. Therefore there is a pool of people who have paid for the match but are always missing.
This effect is obviously being exacerbated very substantially by what is happening on the pitch.
Additionally, we are currently issuing a number of comps via local schools in order to try to maintain the atmosphere and recruit new fans (I accept this may not be sensible for a December evening game when we are bottom of the league and that has been discussed internally!). They won't have the same kind of turnout rate as people who have paid for their ticket - although you can work out from the number of STs we have that it is STs who will account for the largest part of the shortfall.
We have had very large shortfalls in the past, for example at the end of last season, but nothing quite like last night and that's why a decision was taken not to put the official attendance on the big screen. However, if we published the lower count of people in the ground it would not be a like for like figure with previous matches, so for the time being we are stuck with what we do. Neither can we immediately separate out non-attending STs fron non-attending comps, although I would accept that a free ticket that isn't used is a pretty meaningless addition to the number.
[cite]Posted By: adamtheaddick[/cite]weve had comps from my mrs school and my sisters school where they work, Charlton Manor and Our Lady of Grace for nearly every home game this term.
We have only issued 50 comps per school for two matches - Bristol City and Coventry.
If any school is getting comps for "nearly every home match" they are not getting them from an authorised source.
the sports teachers seem to be the ones with the tickets airmen, every ticket ive had has had either just complementary on them or the name of the school, after 20 years of plowing money in and not being able to afford a season ticket this year who would turn them down?

Fair enough, but the club has to be fair to everyone and there would be plenty of people in that position, as well as those who have paid for season tickets.
It's possible the tickets without the school's name come through the community scheme, but if it's happening with the regularity you suggest then we would not be happy with that.
It's good of Airman Brown to come on and explain things in a bit more detail, but if our home attendances were a musical then they would surely be "Fiddler on the Roof"!
we have had comps for Sheff Weds, Bristol City, Burnley, Barnsley and Coventry. Paid in full for Swansea and Wolves. more than happy to whisper any details over to you airman if you think somthing is wrong.. Having worked for greenwich council and most of my family working one way or another for them too there always seems to be tickets knocking around... Christ feel like im on trial here!!!!
I was actually surprised by the number who were there night last considering it was a freezing December Tuesday night, we are bottom without a win in 12 and watching the worst team I've seen in the CAFC shirt since I started going in 1986/87.
I think this shows what a great job the Target 10,000 and other iniatives did and how they brought in fans who have shown their loyalty by turning up week in week out despite the rubbish we have been watching for most of the past 12 months.

In fairness, its only been the last few home games that the 'real' attendance has seriously lagged the announced one.

They should of dished them out instead of detention ;-)
