Somewhere out there

edited December 2008 in General Charlton
is a manager in waiting who can turn this great club of ours around...ironiclly it's most likely someone who is hardly tried or tested, a virtual unknown....look at the two great managers in our recent history.....Lennie and Curbs(or Curb's....if you prefer) both came somewhat out of the blue with little or no track record elsewhere....on the list of 40 IS THERE a new saviour somehere in the wings....and just as more to the point...can we(i.e The Addicks heirachy) spot him amongst the crowd?

  • i thought you were going to say... "somewhere out there..... are three points".
  • OK Curb_It.....Somewhere out there....are three points!!! LOL!
  • Somewhere out there,
    beneath the pale moonlight,
someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight.

    Somewhere out there,
    someone's saying a prayer,
that we'll find one another in that big somewhere out there.

And even though I know how very far apart we are,
it helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star.

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby,
it helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky.

    Somewhere out there,
if love can see us through,
then we'll be together, somewhere out there,
    out where dreams come true.
  • Blimey Bart...you're waxing lyrical today...your going soft in yer old age...it happens to all of us mate.
  • we don't have the fans now that would give managers the time and patience we showed Lennie and Crbs to get it right though

The worrying thing from my point of view is that when the list of candidates was probably double what it is now our board plumped for Dowie!
  • And it could be Parkinson. I don't honestly think anyone else, with the possible exception of Curbs, would be likely to do better. He needs to stick with more or less his best 11 win or lose and we need to back him and hope the revival starts soon!
  • Aww how sweet thats from the film An American Tale.
  • Out there in space, can we find friends,

Is there a place where the universe ends?

    (any guesses?)
  • I get the impression that the real reason we are in this state is because the board can't afford to honour their promise of free season tickets if we get promoted and therefore would have been happy to 'just miss out' on the play-offs. They only really seemed to act on Pards after the demo began callling for the board to be sacked! and asking 'where the money had gone?'

In the words of Captain Mainwairing: "you stupid boy"

    ;-)
  • Utter tosh. 15,000 season tickets at, say £450 each = £5.9m, net of VAT. Premiership earnings uncertain, but probly around £40m plus. Don't really support your argument, I'd say.

Poor Fieval, he just wants to find his family!

    I might cry.
  • Then why did they dither over Pards- the possible sale of the club was ready made get out for them- until that fell through. I go to see Charlton as my 13 year old son supports them and hence I also have a season ticket despite being a lifelong Manchester United fan- therefore my views are based on an 'outsider' looking in- several friends of mine who are not even football fans but business men also came to the same conclusion. All the time CAFC looked like they were top half pushing for the play-offs the board could rest on their laurels. The only reason Dowie was appointed was so that they could 'have one over on Palace' not because of his record as a manager so why not the above. No-one will want to but it whilst they are in the current predictament which is why they had to act- out of self interest.
  • Ermmmmm...to me a fan is someone who goes to watch their LOCAL team week in week out( or at least on fairly a regular basis)...you mean't to say you 'follow' Man Utd I think...there is a subtle but very real difference Subs.If you actually do go to see them fairly often please accept my take on this...... re yourself that is.
I see scores on Man U 'followers' Chelsea,Liverpool, Arsenal etc around the place who tell you they are fans......yet invariably I've been to Old Trafford and the other grounds more than they have.

    Jonny-come-lately ALERT!
  • If only we could persuade Curbs to join us until the end of the season to steer us clear of relegation similar to when Middlesbrough got Venables in to save them a few years back. We can't afford much in terms of Curbs wages but we could promise him a decent bonus for keeping us up. I know it's unlikely to happen but i can dream!

In the interests of maintaining harmony on this board and this not developing into yet another tit-for-tat name calling thread, all I will say to this is that I stongly disagree that the suggestions being made here are anywhere near the truth.

Chris. There is absolutely no way on gods green earth that Curbs is coming back.

Think about it.Good or bad,he always had his favorites and if you didn't tow the line you were out(Think Konch).
Without any money to spend he just wouldn't be able to assemble the side that he thinks could get us out of this mess.He would have to self motivate the tosh that we've got here at the moment.(Turd polishing,if you like)And that is just not Curbs game.He would become frustrated with the poor effort and performances and would alienate himself from 99% of the squad.
Also taking into consideration his stock has risen hugely with his time at West ham and with the likes of Sunderland and Blackburn waiting in the wings he knows it won't be too long before a prem league club comes knocking.
For us,i'm not sure what the future holds and if i'm honest i'm not looking forward to it.But i know one thing,it will not be in the hands of Alan Curbishley.

Hence why i said 'i know it's unlikely to happen but i can dream'.
  • Curb's will be back at the helm in a few weeks till the end of the season, mark my words, assuming he hasn't already taken the helm at Ipswich.. now where is my pro plus
  • Pro Plus? If anyone thinks Curbs will comeback needs to be on Crack.

    NEVER.GO.BACK
  • As I have already stated, it is my son who is the Charlton fan in the family- I took him to his first game at The Valley eight years ago and we have been going most weeks since, therefore I have been unable to see Man U play as often as I would like BUT I have seen them at several away games and HAVE been to Old Trafford to see them play. I enjoy watching good football and hold Charlton in high esteem especially as I lived and worked inthe area for almost fifteen years before I moved to Medway and there fore know what the commuity mean to CAFC and what CAFC means to the community- to see them in their current plight is sad and I, for one would love for them to turn it around, for my son, all the supporters and for the local people. My views are only just that, my views but remember what started these chain of events! Curbs only wanted to sign a one year extentsion to his contract which the board felt wasn't good enough, they then ask Davies to become the new manager on merit but whilst he is thinking it over give the job to the manager of the local rivals, who Charlton themselves, had only just relegated hours after Jordan has said the last place he wants Dowie to go to was Charlton! You cannot tell me that Dowie was appointed on merit-as soon as his appointment was announced I was telling people that CAFC would subsequently be relegated that season and would take several years to get back what they had- I think I was spot on don't you agree!
  • Good on you Stubs for taking your son, and good on him for following his local team. He will grow up knowing what it is like to be a real football supporter.

I think it's pretty obvious the rot that had set in, only got worse with the Dowie appointment. At the time it wasn't a choice many would have disagreed with in footballing terms, he had worked wonders with the pub team he had managed previously & in theory given financial backing & time he should have emulated that with us.

    The rest is history.

But Davies wasn't thinking it over, he turned it down.
  • The hard truth is that the natural order is being restored.

Charlton has had 3 great managers Jimmy Seed, Lennie Lawrence and Alan Curbishley all of whom had the talent to get us and keep us at the top level.

The rest of the time we have been a second or third tier club.

Those who have called for "their Charlton back" have got it.
  • I was under the impression that Davies had asked for 24 hours to think it over and the board FEARING that he was going to turn them down snapped up Dowie. I was never a fan of Dowie at any club he had been manager- from the comments around me when he took over I was also under the impression that alot of fans knew it was a disaster waiting to happen. The board have got to take responsibility for this , especially when, after he had been sacked, they questioned some of his signings- surely a responsible board should have done that before he was allowed to make the purchases. I was really sad that he almost immediately sidelined 'Kish' who was my favourite player. He wasn't the best in the world but he gave his all. His passing could be questionable at times but usually he had won the ball in the first place to give it away and then always tried to win it back- not like some of our midfield now who look on disdainfully when the opposition win the ball. I wasa hoping that Bailey might bea Kish player but once the opposition rile him, it appears that he loses concentration.
