40 Managers apply

edited December 2008 in General Charlton
Charlton have received more than 40 applications for their managerial vacancy.

Since parting company with Alan Pardew a week ago, the club have been inundated by what one insider described as “high quality” applicants.

Former Bolton and Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce is thought to be among them.

But the board are known to favour caretaker Phil Parkinson who looks certain to be given until Christmas to try and turn the club’s fortunes around.

In a frank and brutal assessment of Pardew’s reign this season, football club chairman Richard Murray confessed that directors were left with no option but to part company with the man they appointed on Christmas Eve, 2006.

He said: “We examined the whole situation. Given that we are in a results driven business, the statistics showed that we had only picked up three points from the last 24 available and our position in the league could not be ignored.

“It was not a decision we took lightly and while Charlton is a club that will always listen to supporters, we will make decisions in the best interests of the long-term future of the club rather than respond to knee-jerk reactions following bad defeats.”

Charlton will have to find more than £1 million to pay off the remainder of Pardew’s contract which had another year to run.

This is certain to restrict any spending in the January transfer window.

So who are they?

Curbs?
Big Sam?
Little Sam?
Mourinho?

There's nothing to say Curbs is on the list. I don't think he would 'apply' as such. I think we will have to go and beg him. Which I still think we should.

That Allardyce would contemplate coming to little old Charlton is encouraging. All due respect to Parky, but he is only a caretaker. If Big Sam is interested and we can work out terms of hire, then we would be bloody fools not to take him. (Assuming we can't get Curbs).

On the other hand, there are likely to be vacancies soon at Sunderland and Blackburn so if Allardyce came he could very swiftly leave us in the lurch again.(But at least there would be a compensation package from a prem club that would cover Pardew's pay-off?)

Dunno all the names on the list but in addition to Allardyce, I believe Boothroyd is one of them. Think I'd rather have Parky than him.

    So my list:

    1. Curbs
    2. Allardyce
    3. Parkinson
  • Yung, if you want Curbishley back as much as you say, I suggest you just pipe down. All you are doing is pissing people off by banging on like a cracked record with your bizarre cod syntax which is so fake that it's not even funny...

Yes, I'd have Curbs back like a shot. But if you carry on like this, I might start to have second thoughts.
  • Or too old. Anyway I'd love to see Curbs back but I'm afaid he's not the man to do what is required at the moment and keep us up this season. But if the board face the fact there's a good chance of relegation and are looking to next season already with resources available for team re-building then perhaps he'd take on the challenge.
  • If money were no object I reckon the board would go for big Sam as his high profile would be good and keep some interest in our fortunes

however, given our (by all accounts) fairly desperate situation I presume they are hoping against hope that Parkinson will get us climbing up the table by Xmas and give it to him
  • Sorry if this seems daft but if they've got 40 applicants does it mean the job was advertised somewhere? If it was, why would the board advertise a job that wasn't available? Or do wannabee managers just write in when a manager is sacked?
  • Where do you live Yung?
  • Oh here we go - our resident "Wind Up Merchant Outer" is in the house. ;-)

Parky would NOT have been on most peoples list HOWEVER we have NO MONEY and TBH i dont think there is any other option for that reason.
