The Curbs Debate........

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
One thing is for sure, the press will jump all over this and it will hold a cloud over our next period.

If Curbs is not keen on coming back here, or the club are not keen in having him back, then it needs to be publicly ruled out at the earliest opportunity.

I'm speaking as someone who was incredibly grateful for the job he did here, but felt it was the best time for both parties to have a break from each other. It hasn't worked out the way either party would have wanted, and i personally would take him back in an instant. Curbs knows who to organise teams and grind out results, something this squad desperately lack. He also knows what to buy at this level.

I'd welcome any sensible opinion on why you would not want that to happen.

  • You summed up what I would have said perfectly. Curbs will be in all the papers tomorrow. Rule it in or out as fast a you can chaps.
  • Curbishley wouldn't touch us with a bargepole. Now would Allardyce or any of the other names I've seen mentioned.
  • I will gladly eat a large slice of humble pie if it means he gets us out of the poo we are in!
  • Sadly Leroy I suspect you might be right.
  • Would have said no a year ago.But we have fallen so far that i would welcome him back.
There in lies the problem though.I think even Curbs would struggle to get anything out of the squad Pardew has assembled and probably couldn't be arsed to try.
  • He's my No1 choice

Also likely to be a very very very long shot

    Come on Curbs....prove me wrong....PLEASEEEEEEEEE

I'd disagree with that. i honestly don't think that this squad is as bad as the performances suggest.

Like AFKA I thought that it was the right time for Curbishley to go but right now I can't think of anyone more qualified to get us out of the shit.

What I can't think of of a reason why Curbishley would want to do it and if he doesn't thenI hope he rules himself out as soon as possible and stop any speculation.

To reiterate what I said (more or less) in another thread:

I know they say 'never go back' and I never thought I'd hear myself saying this. But a return for Curbs - perhaps initially on a short-term contract until the end of the season - is not without precedent.

The attraction for us is obvious - god, we could surely kill for some of his famously dull but well-organised football right now.

But why should he consider it? Because he would have the opportunity to become a total Charlton legend and wipe out forever the slightly bad taste of his final couple of years when he seemed to have hung around for that little bit too long.

And he wouldn't have to do very much, would he? Just get us into mid-table respectability come the end of the season, and he could have a bloody stand named after him. Anything more than that and he's a bigger Charlton legend than Sam Bartram, Jimmy Seed and Johnny Summers rolled into one...

I don't think he could lose, really...
  • maybe he feels he owes Murray something....he's not doing anything so why not.....
  • The rest of the football world would say curbishly couldn`t hack it anywhere else but at Charlton.....We knew that anyway. Why would Curbs put himself in that position.

  • Dario Gradi and Crewe, anyone?
  • curbs will want a prem job not a hope he will come back.

He wouldn't come, but good suggestion :)

Seriously though, I understand what you're getting at - but Gradi is a different case to Curbishley - he never had any ambition to do anything other than what he has been doing at Crewe for donkeys years. Curbishley seriously thought he would be a good shout for manager at a 'big' club - had his chance and blew it. Even if he would want to come back (he won't) I don't want a bitter, sour man in charge of my club (we've had that for two years with pardew)
  • Agree nss that Curbs won`t come back but Prem jobs ain`t that easy to come by. Look at Big Sam
  • Does anyone honestly think we could afford a quarter of his salary.
  • A quarter.Yes. Pards was on a good screw.

the interview tonight with sir chris was interesting in that he felt the fans didn't really appreciate sir alan's last couple of years and he felt we were never really behind him. he thought (unbelievably) that we wanted him to go and that we thought that we could move onto the next level without him, crazy stuff i know.
  • No. I think too much water has passed under the bridge. A backward and expensive step in my opinion.

None from me AFKA. You're right. I'll eat as much humble pie as Curbs wants me to.

The problem is that he's already sorted out a Pardew mess once. I doubt he'd want to do it again.
  • No one was a bigger fan of Curbs whilst he was here than me. But why let a legend go through the indignity of picking the club up lower in terms of league placings than when he originally found it. Time for both sides to move on.

  • i dont think the curbs door is shut and i dont think that the curbs years are over at charlton

i feel the time is right and that he may return

may i say this I NEVER WANTED HIM TO LEAVE and i never bought into it is his fault we are in this mess

but i also understand the adage that you dont go back football

but if i couldnt have my 1st choice i would welcome him back in an instance
  • well he did leave us before only to return.

I don't buy into this 'don't go back' cliché. Jesus seemed to do quite well out of it.

    How's your first choice NLA?
  • i would like to see Billy Davies given a bash at it

as for the dont go back i do think it makes it harder but not impossible
  • [cite]Posted By: nth london addick[/cite]i would like to see Billy Davies given a bash at it

In this case I would say that it makes it easier.
  • dunno mate what a legacy that man built, could he do it again??

i would ike him back i really would i felt safe with him i trusted him implicitaly he was my charlton back then, i knew we had a great manager no one will ever get that from me again which is a shame really
  • I was glad when Curbs went, it had gone well stale. And I was jumping up and down wetting myself that we had got Pardew - I thought he would sort our team right out!

What a fool I am - Come back Curbs all is forgiven (apart from Marcus Bent - Who could forgive that!!!)
  • he scored today...
  • edited November 2008
friday night he scored as usual i think you will find TK
  • two things - big Sam or Alan not touching us... they're not working and I reckon both would relish a chance in the shop window as an interim until May to show how high they can get us...

Other threads mention about how the club can't afford decent wonga + a January kitty - well the board want to sell and need to make the best possible appointment to protect what is left of their investment while they find new owners / partners - they can't afford to cock this up again...

People seem to be underplaying us - we have one of the highest gates in this league and the potential to turn around IF the board get the right manager in asap
