Darren David Powell (born March 10, 1976 in Hammersmith) is an English footballer who is currently without a club after he was released by Southampton in July 2008. He is a centre back.

Darren Powell began his career with Hampton & Richmond Borough before moving to Brentford where he spent four years. In August 2002 he signed for Crystal Palace for £400k and initially became an integral part of the team, scoring in the dying seconds of Palace's Play-off Semi-Final Second Leg game, at Sunderland taking the score on the night to a 2-1 defeat, but the aggregate score to 4-4. Palace won on penalties, and were promoted to the Premiership, following a Final win over West Ham. After promotion, he fell out of favour and spent a month at the end of 2004 on loan to West Ham.

In July 2005 he was out of contract and signed for Harry Redknapp at Southampton on a Bosman free transfer. Powell's first goal for the Saints was against Ipswich Town on 13 September 2005. Powell scored his second goal for the club with a first minute tap in from Adam Hammill's cross in a 3-2 home defeat to QPR. He also captained the team several times.[citation needed] After 3 years of failing to establish himself in the first team due to a long run of minor injuries, returning Chairman Rupert Lowe decided not to renew Powell's contract[1].

  • Don't want an injury prone player.

    We have plenty already.

If it's pay as you play then maybe.
  • never heard of him must be 2 bob - but then in Pards we trust LOL
  • He's played a few games for the reserves this year already going back to the summer. Surely the reason that we haven't taken him, to date means that the manager has reservations. Freed by Soton, as well and unable to find a club, to date.
  • cor, that fills me with renewed optimism. Play him alongside Primus and that will solve all our probelms with midfield creativity and goalscoring too.

mmmmm played in just 10 League games for Southampton last season in which they let in no less than 21 goals! Previous season he and Southampton fared better when he played but that was only 8 times.

So he's injury prone and when played last season they let in more than 2 goals a game.

Is this really the level of player we should/are looking at?
  • no we should be signing none league players and not giving em a chance -----------hold on though Pards beat me to that idea.
  • Yeah, thats right, he's REALLY given Fleetwood and Chrissy.D alot of chances hasn't he !
  • Signing Darren Powell.........Paddy Power has got wind of this and has slashed our odds for promotion, another koo by Parpoooo
  • He'll be here. Pards has said he wants another big centre back.

  • thing is we havn't really got a leaking defence. The empty onion bag at the other end is of more concern.

Agree, if we were better going forward it wouldn't be much of a problem.
  • we have had problems all season holding on to leads so it is a problem, but agree it is nothing compared to the struggle to score goals
  • At home we have let in 14 goals. Only Watford with 15 have conceded more. Away only 9 which is better than Reading.

It total we have let in 23 goals, the same as Wolves
  • Perhaps surpisingly, at The Valley we've scored a fair few but can't stop letting them in; whereas we don't concede many away, but score even less.

So at home we need to improve our defending, away from home we need to start scoring more.
  • We let in too many cheap goals from set pieces, cause we're too small at the moment. we need some height in the side, whatever way possible

Hopefully Jon Fortune will be back soon.

He adds height, skill and pace (for a defender) at this level.

    Cory Gibbs.
  • Powell is a cheap option for the short term.

Probably won't be first choice but at least we have some experinced back up to call upon if needed. Especially as Fortune is always injured and Primus/Cranie might go back to Portsmouth.

  • Pards said today that he's still interested in signing him but Powell is now close to a deal with Derby according to Paul Jewell.
  • Just signed with Derby....think that goes to show how difficult it is to get decent players at the moment.
  • Done well there then, get him nice and match fit after two/ three reserve games and let him go to another club, another master stroke, never mind.
  • Things ain't looking to good are they :(

Well, in this instance I wouldn't be too hard on Pards - unless he really didn't fancy it at Charlton, it looks like we've been gazumped at the last minute by an equally desperate Derby.

"We've had countless knock backs from Premier League clubs regarding centre halves," Jewell told BBC Radio Derby.

"Darren is available, he knows the Championship, he's an old fashioned defender and it just gives a bit of cover until the end of December."

Reading between the lines, it sounds like a fat financial inducement eagerly taken by a player who apparently hasn't earned a wage since June.

And for a player who is 33 in March.
  • There's no hding this one Oggy.

Christ almighty, we can't even attract players who are on the way down.
  • As i said yesterday, we're simply not an attractive proposition at the moment.
  • To be fair he is from the area so probably an easy decision.
  • Has anyone considered that, after 3 defeates for the reserves in which Powell played at CB, Pardew decided against signing him?

Or that we've got someone else lined up?

I think people are getting carried away here. There's been no official confirmation that Harte 'rejected' a deal with us but that plus this news about Powell has, IMHO, made people jump to conclusions.

TBH, I don't think we need any more bloody players. If just means more chopping and changing.

Fortune and Racon are nearly match fit.

perhaps he isn't deemed good enough, or perhaps the wages Derby were offering were beyond our budget ..... but never mind just start launching into the blame game again.
