South African Investors (Murray: "We are looking for a buyer")

edited November 2008 in General Charlton
wyn Grant has just mentioned this on the mailing list.

"Does anyone know about a South African consortium who have been 'linked' to Charlton? If they are the people I think they are, they are brewing interests who considered Newcastle, have looked at Fulham and turned down Portsmouth. Charlton in its present state is hardly attractive to anyone and I'm not saying there is any substance at all in this, I just wondered if anyone else had heard anything."

Anybody on here heard anything?

I can't believe after Jabeel, that we're not trying to secure new investment.

Doesn't sound like a goer to me

    Businessmen deny Newcastle links
    Johann Rupert
Rupert is reported to be the richest man in South Africa

Three South African businessmen linked with a possible £300m takeover of Newcastle have denied any interest.

Billionaire Johann Rupert told BBC Sport he had "absolutely no interest and no knowledge" of any takeover and had never met any of those involved.

Brian Joffe and Vivian Imerman also denied being part of the consortium.

Jonathan Cleland, spokesman for the anonymous consortium, said he was 80% confident of sealing a deal and had spoken to Kevin Keegan about returning.

Rupert, the executive chairman of a Swiss-owned luxury goods company, is reported to be the richest man in South Africa.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live he was bemused and amazed by the reports linking him with the Premier League club.

"I have never met Mr Cleland, never spoken to him on the phone and my secretary does not have a record of him calling," he said.

"I haven't spoken to any of the other parties either. I don't know Mr Cleland, I have a preference for cricket and rugby. I don't know anything about football and I'm not a football man.

"I think it is a bit naughty. They use your name, you deny it - it is a total joke."

Imerman, a former owner of canned food group Del Monte who has since bought into Scottish whisky producer Whyte and Mackay, issued a statement to make his position clear.

A spokesman said: "Vivian Imerman can re-confirm that he has no involvement whatsoever with any proposed purchase of Newcastle United nor any other football club."

Joffe, founder of investment holding firm Bidvest, joined them in dismissing the rumours.
  • Thanks Henry, that's obviously who Wyn has in mind.
  • Somebody mentioned that it appeared in the Daily Mail over the weekend - still it could be true - interested in Pompey, us and somebody else.

I wouldn't have thought we are "whoring" ourselves out, but would be open to enquirys?
  • It was the bloody press that cost us our investor

    Zabeel Statement

  • Well if they're press shy then maybe British football isn't right for them.
  • blinding......

so with us looking like a lemon on the pitch and a couple of lazt journalists waking up hungover and using us as an easy story......

According to Browney we had 4 players lined up......

Im not in a very good mood.....

Why we cant get a bloody competant manager I dont know.....

We need someone who has the balls to get our players going again.... we seem to have been drifting for years now...

    all the work unravelled...
  • i did hear this was a factor
  • Rupert has bought a large stake in the Rugby Union club Saracens, and seems to be trying to use them as a way of targetting the Saffer ex pat community.

There is constant talk that they're leaving Watford and moving East to take up use of one of Olympic stadia, i can only assume thats why we're linked as he's already said he's not interested in football.
  • r.e zabeel, totally agree with Carly Burn, if they didn't want the media hype the most logical thing to do is try and buy a club in a country with the most poorly behaved media ffs! What a bunch of Wally's as Uncle Albert would say!
Anyone buying a football club is essentially doing it as a vanity project anyway and would obviously love all the plaudits should it all go to plan. So all things considered we are well rid. Bring on the Springboks... but tell me about it until its a done deal.
  • that zabeel thing is a crock of do do
  • sorry, don't buy it myself
  • [cite]Posted By: razil[/cite]that zabeel thing is a crock of do do

Yeah Reuters.fantasists the lot of em'

Now if it had been in the Sunday people on the other hand.......
  • ha ha sorry i meant that statement..

    * Reaches for the Vodka *
  • From ITV Sport:

Charlton chairman Richard Murray has dismissed reports from last weekend's national newspapers suggesting a South African based consortium were interested in buying the club.

After last month's collapse in takeover discussions with Dubai-based company Zabeel Holdings, Murray remains baffled about the latest rumours.

"I don't know anything about this story, or where it came from," Murray told the Kent Messenger.

"The word is out that we're looking for a buyer after what happened with Zabeel so we're going to be connected with plenty of speculation.

"But I can confirm that we are looking for a buyer."
  • I really don't like the sound of this. We are not going to push AP out the door if we are hawking the Club around to all and sundry. Vicious downward spiral, both on and off the pitch, here we come :-(
  • that's what I like about you Weegie, always so positive !!

PS Do you get that from your Dad ??
  • is there anyway in the world we could knock up a consortium and get an offer in, obviuously not us none of us are rich enough but if anyone knows anyone who is miinted or get an explayer ala Niall Quinn to get some people on board... Im sure there are british people out here that would put money in for the club, Niall Quinn is a perfect role model and would be just the sort of person we would love as chairman, not hands on, takes a gamble on transfers Who do we know that could be like Niall?

No, Large, he's much more optimistic than me, fortunately...assuming you mean the one you've met?

Actually the other one was very positive too, but he's dead now. I did warn him it would all end in tears...!
  • Worrying times. It's bad enough we're up for sale let alone banding it around to the press.
    Smacks of desperation!

Could Curbs and his brother do a whipround among a few rockstars, do you think? The Who have played at The Valley before, after all...
  • was thinking more of Andy Murray's trainner and Bjorn Borg addicks fans who no doubt run shoulders with mega rich people.

Borg was interviewed on Radio 5 this morning. I was quite annoyed that Nicky Campbell didn't ask him his opinion of Pards. Ridiculous that he only asked him about tennis... :-(
