Grief from other fans

edited October 2008 in General Charlton
Anyone else getting grief from other fans yet?

I got the "you're skint and you're going down" from a Millwall fan last night". You'll get relegated and then have a 20 point deduction when you go into administration. I bet him £20 that we wont be in a league below them next season but that's more me believing that they don't go up rather than we wont go down.

Funny how these spanners are crawling out of the wood work. Not seen nor heard much from them for years!

Been a long long time since i felt this low about Charlton.

Still be there on saturday though

  • Sometimes it's good to be living in Scotland! Most up here hadn't even heard about the potential takeover, apart from one colleague who said she never felt it 'sat comfortably' with Charlton anyway...
  • Had none, though i didn't make anything of it in the first place.

Found the whole episode a real eye opener to be honest.

Always thought the reason everyone followed Charlton wasn't just through family or because its the local club reasons, but additionally that it was a 'proper' football club that has ups and downs, but ultimately is widely different to a the big four commercial animals.

Seeing the way so many creamed themselves on the tiny prospect that we had a chance of turning into one of those beasts, surprised me greatly.

so AFKA you dont want to see our beloved CAFC winning anything significant then. I did 'cream' my panties as I can see its the only chance that we have at the mo. Due to the boards mistakes in the past we are in this position. Thats why I regret showing off to some arsenal 'in law' fans asking them how much do they want for Fabregasce :-(

yes of course, but not at any price.

Agreed, and we would have turned into a commercial beast, a lot of people on here had spent millions and drawn up a new squad within 1 hour of the rumours hitting this forum two Fridays ago.

    so be it.
  • AFKA - Im very happy with my life as it is but on a personal level a lottery win would be incredibly exciting life changing experience, would i turn it down because i'm already happy with my lot, not a bloody chance!

... why is it any different for my football club?

I am not low at all, still very proud of my club.

I got some grief, they can go f**k 'em selves, you get thick skin being an Addick.
  • Reverse psycology always works, people were coming upto me this morning asking about it and who we had the weekend, those who do so are mainly Arsenal / Man u fans, although within the office there are Wolves,Torquay, and Southampton, point out that you have worked out that if we go down that you would have atleast eleven new grounds to go to.........Arsenal fans straight on the back foot, and that you are now looking at who is at the top of the division two league and who you do and dont want to go up so you can get to see some new grounds. Now you state that you really dont want Bury to go up as you have been there, and they currently at the top, Dagenham, Barnet, respect is flowing throughout the office as you are recognised as a true fan,you then hit them with the number of grounds that you have done (71). Finally you tell them the major pluses of going down, a pie and boviril at half time, standing on an exposed northern terrace, pi55ing down with rain, now that is football, something Arsenal, Liverpool, Manure and Chelski plus many many other fans will never have the oppertunity to experience, we have done all the big grounds and i would like to point won there as well, now we are going on another little journey. All of a sudden the original question/ snipe has been forgotten and you then find that people are preditcting that we wont go down. Dont believe me try it, because if you dont convince them you will end up convincing yourself and life aint so bad after all

But i'm sure many will tell you that a lottery win does not automatically bring happiness, that some still end up bankrupt, and some wished they never won it in the first place !!

I fully appreciate others will disagree with our stance, but i just can't when i break it down see how their model matches up in any way with our model. The decisions on how our club would be run would be decided on the other side of the world, by people who know nothing of our club, have never been to The Valley, the area or seen one of our games. Their only knowledge of football in this country would be that of the superpowers that get mass coverage in the Middle East, and as we know, that is a very different entity to us.

Their real intentions of why they were interested in our club were never fully established, whilst the announcing statements and closing statements contained quotes that were quite clearly false, manufactured bollocks. It could well be that their intentions were long term to move the club to another area, or for the club to not be their primary focus, but an 'in' into a developing area etc. We simply have no idea what their intentions were.

If they had of come in and thrown their chequebook around in the short-term, it could of had dire long-term consequences, once again landing us with a wage bill we could not sustain again, whilst breeding greed in supporters. We would as a club be trying to run before we can walk properly.

If they had of come in and not thrown a chequebook around, they would have been a target for those who got off on the thought of Charlton becoming a superpower. With no connection to the club, i know how they would of reacted once stick started to fly around.

Ultimately, i just don't think we are strong enough as a club to successfully carry the amount of change this would of instigated. Had this have happened three years ago, i would of seen it being a successful venture. But not from our current vantage point.

    Just my view though.

  • Had my Huddersfield mate telling me this could be a blessing in disguise.
  • Indeed AFKA, but it would have been an exciting time, especailly as after hitting a peak a few years ago we seem to be heading down one of the circles of footballs eventual troughs.

Totally agree that there may well have been negative to any decisions, there can also have been be massive gains and positivity. It's all conjecture at this point as we'll never know. We could have ended up like Chelsea or at worst Hearts but it would definately have been a fun ride!

The way i see it is Zabeels loss, they don't want to be involved in this fantastic club of ours no skin off our collectrive nose's we're in a similar position to where we were a couple of weeks ago.
  • not had much abuse, most people have consuled me, said they were gutted for me.

few of the crystal palace lot at work, gave a few jibs but even they seemed gutted for us!!

oh other than knob head united fan, then reminded him the fact he'd never even been to manchester no matter seen them play, which of course he clammed to have seen them on numerous occasions, forgettin i'd been friends with him since school and knew he never had, y do they do it??

I don't think that anyone took it seriously anyway. That and the fact that such events seem to be more commonplace at the moment anyway - can't say that there was a massive (pun intended) amount of excitement over the City deal outside of those directly associated with the club and they potentially have more cash resources than anyone.

The top four of the premiership still hasn't changed for a few years now and until it does they'll be no proof that all this money is solving things.

I'm one of the mugs who did...and I readily admit it!
Feeling 'absolutely' gutted and it's gonna take sometime for me to get over the dissapointment....by nature I'm a glass half full character and it's hit us, with that kind of trait in their character, quite a bit harder than the glass half empty brigade.
Seems something like a 50/50 split on this board.

Sorry, I should have phrased that comment better - I meant that fans of other clubs didn't take it too seriously. I imagine that very few people who support Charlton that wouldn't want to see a larger cash investment in the club.
  • No offence taken Sco.................after all, you more cautious folk were right in the end!
  • well i love our great football club and millwall can go and f--k themselves .

steve they are shit they av been lucky wait and see we are shit at the moment but things can change look at me son im trying to relax and chill finding it f-----g hard though .
  • Luckily living down here I don't get much grief as most of the locals are idiots anyway and can't read (but they can drive tractors).

    I did get excited about the takeover and although money isn't everything as the saying goes;

Better to be rich and miserable than poor and miserable.
  • A couple of my "friends" texted me (palarse), they were pissing themselves.

As I said to them, the press didn’t even speculate about them.
  • As AFKA said not had any stick - one because I never made anything of it originally and 2 the mugs I work with are plastics anyway.
  • [cite]Posted By: Ledge[/cite]As AFKA said not had any stick - one because I never made anything of it originally and 2 the mugs I work with are plastics anyway.

    same
  • I had an e-mail from a QPR fan asking if we wanted them to write us a cheque!!! Lets forget about what could of been and get on with making our way up the table starting on Saturday against Burnley. We may be 20th but its only 6 points from playoffs!! We've done alright up to now without foreign investment and i'm sure Murray will continue to do his best to drive the club forward (just with less £££££!)
  • Not had any grief but then was being very cautious about larging it with mates until it was done.

Would still have liked it to have gone through as it would have been a new adventure but there will be other excitements, maybe even other takeovers, owners so will look forward to them.

some people rationalised relegation as a good thing because we'd weed out the deadwood, win more games and visit new grounds. Look how that turned out.
  • as Henry alluded to, you would only of got grief if you gave it the biggun anyway. I didnt really mention it at work. I have just followed the pack and saved all my comments for the Spurs fan next to me.

Thank god for Spurs, they keep the heat off everyone else at the moment.
