So with all the money we "MAY" have for the January transfer window - who do we buy?!

We'll have the funds to buy MILLIONS of non-league players !!!

Ok, I might sound contradictory here so i'll explain.
Firstly, in the very short term (1-2 years) I don't think we're going to be splashing the cash as people on here seem to expect.
In the short term (5-10 years) I reckon we'll be successful regaining our Premiership status etc.
In the long term I think they sell the club at a profit (being that they see the club as an investment) at which point we could be in all sorts of turmoil.
In addition we may in the meanwhile sell the ground and move to Kent.

I know I sound negative but I'm just balancing out the ridiculously over-positive posts on here. Why is everyone getting so excited about something which could be (and I hope I'm wrong) bad news in the long term for the club?

Or we buy West Ham as our feeder club in the thrid division!!!

I think you are right to have some doubts. "What does it benefit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?" as someone else from the Middle East once said.

    But..........

I think we should be allowed a period of celebration before the doom mongers descend.

We may have many years to study the benefits of the having new owners and to regret the decision to sell so for today let us make merry.

the time for analysis of the situation is yet to come. Personally I feel this is the time for fans to state what they want. By that I don't mean which players to buy but how they want the club to progress.

    For me that means

    On the field

Developing a bigger and better youth academy. Millwall have closed theirs so let's move in. Palace's is in turmoil so let's so what we can do.

Developing the overseas clubs such as the Ivory coast/China etc as sources of less expensive imports

buying the best young UK talent (the Walcotts of the future) to boost our squad

    Off the Field

Developing the Stadium. We may not fill it straight away but nothing sells seats like a successful side.

Working with the Trust to access funding and raising the profile

Keeping up the community work to keep Charlton a part of the community

Well said Henry. If we do now have loads of money I'd like us to surprise the football world and invest it in the largest youth academy in the world. I don't want to buy greedy big name stars who kiss the badge when they score because they think (wrongly) that it will please us. I want us to bring through the next Beckham, Rooney or Defoe (again!) who will then kiss the badge for the right reason.

Blimey Henry, very statesmanlike. You almost sound like a director there. ;-)
  • Definitely want to see us invest in the academy. We've got a few promising youngsters now, the first time in 6/7 years.

Agree about the links with foreign clubs, especially the Ivory Coast one, plenty of good players have come through ASECs academy and the board did a good job to get us working with them ahead of any other club. Looking forward to seeing if we ever get anything out of that.

If the takeover happens, I really hope we keep working on the academy, the overseas links, reasonably priced season tickets, working in the community etc.

A takeover was going to happen at some point, I'm excited and worried at the same time, hopefully the board have made the right decision for the club. They're Charlton fans after all, they want us to be a successful club just as we do.

Do you think so? maybe I should stand for this new Fans Forum thingy,

Got to be better than that Supporters' Director rubbish we had.
  • going back to the start of this thread then number one is definately bring BabyBent back. Parker, in my opinion, is a spent force and will never be as good as he was with us initially. A classic case of the grass isn't necessarily greener. After BabyBent I'm not too bothered if it's Kaka or Messi but one of 'em will do.
  • I'd love it if we resigned Alex Song. He'd be a great partner to Bailey. A player could turn us into league winners.

    S.
  • Robert Green Matt Upson and some other players from the bankrupted West Ham
    Jermaine Beckford
    Eidur Gudjohnson
    Darren Bent
    Matt Dawson
    Aaron Lennon

Went to a charity dinner last night and was on a table with 5 other Addicks. We came to the conclusion that we should sign David Beckham. BTW, everyone of us was really excited by the prospect of this takeover.

  • I can really see the Watson thing nappening (due to all the past rumours), then we need a pacey central defender and an imposing striker, who I have no idea. Also would like to see early movement, possibly in December ready to get started as soon as the window opens.
  • watching the England game last night I too wondered about Beckham.
His season is nearly over and he will want to keep in the England squad . Maybe a loan deal?!

Failing that Reidy back, and someone who can score goals. I'd love us to have an academy like Arsenal and to play that way too!

    Song would be ideal IMO

Would also like some wonderkid from Spain or Portugal - no idea who though
  • Signing Beckham would be a fantastic move. Shirt sales, world-wide recognition, ticket boosts, it'd practically fund itself. Still not a bad player either!

With the added bonus that with Makro and Matalan just over the road, that'll keep Mrs Beckham happy. ;-)
  • Can we get Theiry Henry? Good headline purchase, good striker and people wearing shirts with my name on the back.
  • I'd got half way through this thread, and thought we need a player who can actually cross the ball... Beckham would be fantastic. Apart from the fact he can still play, merchandise sales, bums on seats etc, It might entice the other half to follow Charlton.

You know that Beckham actually got his own pad in Dubai...?

In Palm Jumeirah to be exact (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_Jumeirah) and no doubt he hobknobs with the Dubai Royals now and then and have agreed to a secret deal with Sheik Hamdan...Perhaps!
  • I'm not one for pads...but the next time I see David, perhaps I'll ask him if fancies coming to play for Charlton ;)
  • I was also thinking beckham altho the media circus might detract somewhat..and any charlton lads made good, keep a strong british spine too pls.
  • It appears the media circus is already with us, Razil. As for the other lads...much depends on how they react and quickly things move forward.

  • was thinking ex charlton lads, bent parker et al.. I hear Posh is lonely in LA but i may have been reading that in a very old trash mag at the doctors the other day. LOL.
  • Posh can come and do the Valley Draw at half time if she likes. LOL
  • Beckham and Baby Bent playing together for Charlton...I could get quite excited by this takeover idea...and suddenly it doesn't feel like complete pie in the sky.

Buffon in goal for me too - we need a bit of Italian class somewhere! Plus maybe Cannavaro at centre half. OK, might need to wait till we've qualified for the Champions League for that...

Strange that no-one's mentioned Judas Defoe - what with Portsmouth being in the doo-doo, and him being an old boy too. Wonder why that is? ;-)

It would suit Becks cos he could keep fit for England as the Yanks close season fast approacheth. Perhaps he could be offered a start in a coaching role (OK well he'd do better than Gazza did). Can't see it happening really. As for Defoe - I'm glad you put that wink in..
  • sidwell, song, darren bent... all this baby talk because of that totally loser marcus.... nobody puts baby in the corner....

    so Darren Bent

    Sidwell

    Song

and an experienced European centre half .... thats our spine to get us promoted
  • well Becks has got his academy over the road!

Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum has already been busy getting potential stars signed up, seems like speed and strenght are highly valued

link: Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum (the ruler of Dubai), his brother and a few of their acolytes rode into town and bought ...
  • 3 players would be enough, right down the centre of the spine, a top quality centre back, Scottie Parker, and a top striker would ding dang do for me..
  • wingers mate, we are well short
