not wrong i couldnt get out of work early enough to nip over to borehamwood last night hopefully uncle will give us an update i know he went, 2 for dicko and 1 for the boy wonder they need to be getting a look in ffs
  • I'm all for varney and gray I have said as much BUT if the strikers are not scoring their understudy is it's only right they get a shot (pardon the pun)
  • If varney and gray are 1st choice then dicko and Toddy must be 2nd my bench for cardivs would include

    Shelvey, Dicko

I don't rate Dickson...well what I've seen of him thus far that is (apply the same to McLeod by the way) and it's surely WAY too early to play Shelvey on an ongoing basis....the odd cameo here and there maybe. He looks somewhat fragile at present and needs to go out on loan to toughen up........good on the ball but way off the pace off it.
  • what have you seen of him then?? fleeting appearances for the 1st team - can't be judged on them.

Or do you go to a lot of reserve games.

    Yes and yes.

Box to box all night last night certainly wasn't off the pace at all. As for being fragile !!! You really need to get to the reserve games to see who's doing what

The common take on it is that as a slightly built 16 year old he's not yet tough enough for regular ongoing first team duties...that's been said by a number of the staff at Sparrows Lane...UNCLE!!
By off the pace I mean't as far as tackling and ball winning duties go, not his box to box pace....we saw that quite clearly ourselves in the one or two apearances he's made thus far....the lad will 'hopefully' be a real find but let's not rush things and instead go about toughening him up and getting a bit more bite into him.
He's got plenty of time ahead of him...let's not rush him.
  • But Uncle he said he goes to a lot of reserve games.

Only seen Shelvey once and that was the Cov game but got to say think you are way off the mark saying Shelvey is fragile.

As for going out on loan that is not going to happen not this season anyway.
  • I do understand what you are saying soundas but i just feel no one (apart maybe the loaning team) would benefit by sending him out on loan. He is only 16 thats true but how will someone else toughen him up more. I think he is better kept in the reserves and brought out when needed. That way he will be trained the way they want him trained and played in a way they want him played. Not stuck in some shite 2nd div northern team playing on ploughed fields against a load of pub teams. Just my opinion. Ledge i go to lots too but we all see things differently and not just cos of the relative thing 3 goals in 3 games and as many assists from mid field does tell a bit of a story.

I'm with Uncle here, Shelvey is an old head on young shoulders he will know that he is ready and he'll make sure that he gets in the team. He is very much well in every game he plays and that s why I like him, has heart skill and pace. Best of luck to him.
  • From what I've seen I think Shelvey could be a big player for us next season if we keep him & Bailey stays. Not sure if he is quite ready for it yet on what I've seen. He'll have to play more this season of course to make that final step up but not quite ready yet imo.

Big Chris though, really not sure about him. The times he has came on or started I just don't see what others do. Can't remember which game it was when he came on but he squandered two 1-on-1's & missed another easy opportunity. If our first 3 choice strikers aren't doing it then give him a go for sure, but can't see him being any better.

when exactly did chris last start? you need to start games in order to be able to improve on those real situations! (a league game that is!)
  • Started in our cup games last season didn't he?
  • [cite]Posted By: cafcpolo[/cite]Started in our cup games last season didn't he?

Exactly, a game here and a game there. No striker can really perform to the best of their ability unless they're given a run in the side. Gray gets a run because we spent decent money on him. If Dickson played and performed as annonymously as Gray has done in many games, he'd be straight out of the side.

With our cup pedigree that's no feather in the cap Polo.

Probably started 2 games then LOL
  • according to the OS, "Jonjo Shelvey has been withdrawn from the England U17 squad for this month's European Championship campaign in Spain ... since the qualifying rounds take place from October 22-27th, so Shelvey's inclusion would mean he would miss Charlton's home games with Bristol City and Burnley and the away date at Ipswich Town.."

Seems a bit harsh to me, since have enough midfielders anyway. Or is he beyond that level now?

If only he had finished better, it could have been three ;) LOL

Salad - Maybe Baileys injury is worse than originally expected?
  • Dicko has never started a game for our first team he only came off the bench in the cup games last season
  • Shelvey is ready to be involved in and around the 1st team squad that will toughen him up enough, You cant go sending a prospect like Jon Jo out to some team just so he can get kicked, I am sure we have enough players in and around the squad who could kick him if that was the case.

He is good enough to have on the bench and brought on for 25-30 mins if the game needs something diffrent from midfield.

but then again i am told he is too young

  • We and other clubs regularly send youngsters out to lower league teams for short loan spells to do just that very thing......I know there are several who we have done this with...Parker being a perfect example.

Guess its because we have two home games, which he's much more likely to be involved in. Maybe they're thinking Bailey might be out? Also its 3 games in a week, so Pardew will want to rest some players, and have cover if we pick up injuries.
  • sending him out to a team for experience sits with me fine but i wouldnt go lower than the chumpionship and seeing as we are in it i dont see the value, we should be able to bed him in ourselves at this level and i really am struggling to understand why he doesnt make the bench in home games here.

If memory serves me we sent parker to Norwich now i can see value in that but i aint sure if we did that whilst we were prem or were we Chumpionship then also??

If we were prem it made senses if we were Chumpionship it made sense as we had a vast amount of expeirence in that midfield, In this situation i think keeping him in and around the team on a saturday and giving him 20-30 mins at home would do him a great deal better.

The resies league is quite strong and is a step up from last year i always feel if you are doing it in the ressies you deserve a crack in the 1st team especially if there are players in your position not cutting the mustard or if you can bring something else to the table that may change a game
  • Dickson should start with Varns in our next game!
  • We were in the premiership and Norwich were a Championship club when Parker went on loan .
  • I am in favour of loan deals, but Parker only went to Norwich for one month if I recall?
Although no doubt useful I somehow suspect that it did not have a major impact on his success for us.
  • I really dont see the point then of letting Jon Jo go out on loan then to a club below us as he can learn more from us.

Parker and Jon Jo are of similar stature i dont think that Curbs would have put Parker out on loan had we been in the Chumpionship back then

    Silmilar stature...in which way?
  • Also the fact he is under 17, we can't loan him out, officially he hasn't a proper contract with us, or am I talking bollox now??
  • I think you might be mixing up 17 with 16
