being born in 87, my favourite charlton defender would have to be rufus, very closely followed by jorge costa then stevey brown!i also had a fondness for sweaty balmer!
I ve had several to admire over the years. Marvin hinton..classy and unruffled Simon Webster..always gave his all (and what about that volley) Rufus...watched him from his teens and always knew he'd be special Stevie Brown...Never did let you down Jorge Costa... his experience shone through ...and what about Chapple and Mcleary ? :)
Marvin Hinton - pure class Peter Shirtliff - scored goals as well as defended Richard Rufus - superb tackler and could pass the ball as well. Stevie Brown - Charlton though and through, also his ability in goal allowed the use of an outfield sub JC - slow but always in the right place. Let's hope we can add Hudson this season!
[cite]Posted By: StanmoreAddick[/cite]Rufus for me..
(And like Stone, I loved watching Costa- the time he "Kneed" the ball back to Keily to be greeted by a defening gasp as the whole stadium thought it would be deemed a back pass. Happy dayz!)
Dont remember this particular incident, but why would the whole stadium think it was a back pass ?
For some reason didnt really take to the lad Costa, dont know why.
[cite]Posted By: shrew[/cite]for me it would be shipperley, out of nostalgia, because he was part of one of the most committed cafc teams, and the fact that even as a ten yr old I could recognise him from the top of the east stand
Big Ship! - went into a fifty fifty challenge with him once, my whole body ached for days!
Rufus best defender I have seen at Charlton.
Terry Naylor at right back always made me chuckle, at the end of his career with us but still a good player that had a great rapour with the crowd.
Alan McDonald wasn't bad for the short time he was with us. I stick by my original selection but must admit to completely forgetting about Paul Elliott!!
Peter Reeves is mentioned by others and as a tackler was probably as good as anybody including Rufus. However physically he came from the Chris Perry school so, for me, lacked a bit in the air. That's why I didn't include him in my "best" list.
I have seen a lot of central defenders from Marvin Hinton to date. The top ones i remember at the moment, in no particular order, are:
Paul Elliott Peter Shirtliff Simon Webster Jorge Costa Richard Rufus Paul Went Les Berry Feesh
And the best of these (by a fine margin from Elliott and Costa) is RICHARD RUFUS....a once in thirty years player, as overlooked internationally in his era as Bartram was in his time.

Peter Reeves could man mark ANYONE out the game.
Paul Elliot was class as well , but ill stick with my original 4.
Always liked Tommy Caton too. A hard nut, a great free kick and the ability to boot the ball over the Athur Wait with a clearance!
