I think most of the above comment makes it clear that AFKA is probably right to keep political rants off this otherwise enjoyable board.

For what its worth, I have got my own opinions on this but don't feel inclined to share them in this sort of poisonous atmosphere.

Zone 6 voted and got their mayor!! What a load of old metropolitian right-on crap as usual. What about Zone 2 and 3 voting for Ken for the last 8 years and foistering him on the outer-boroughs?? He visited Bromley three times in that 8 years despite the rate-payers of that London Borough heavily subsiding his schemes. I actually did not mind Ken nor do I dislike Borris, just the tossers who think they are always right and everyone elses oponions are to be dismissed. God those low-level 70's polytechnics did turn out some indoctrinated plums!

Boris said he is going for a modern Routemaster - so a modern bus based on the older design which we can jump on and off and will have a disabled access at the front. The bendy busses will all be under long lease so can't just be dropped they will be phased out if Boris makes it to a second term. His New routemaster is not in production yet and will be years away.

Vincenzo - the 'racist' comments of Boris were taken out of context largely from an article written by Boris about Tony Blairs attitude towards Africa and Blair's colonial approach...

The mayor does planning a bit of waste a bit (not all) policing (not all) and most transport (some roads, TfL, but not railways)

Given the reletavily limited power of mayor I don't think he can destroy London - he may get in good advisers and cut them down from 700+ at the moment to 350 ish in the future.

I can think of one good reason about Boris getting the Mayoral job. It means he will stand down as my local MP. Admittedly we will get another Conservative but they should hopefully be better than Boris.

    [cite]Posted By: Vincenzo[/cite]And I quote...

"The tribal warriors will break out in watermelon smiles to see the big white chief touch down."
"we in the Tory Party have become used to Papua New Guinea-style orgies of cannibalism and chief-killing,"
"Right, let's go see some more piccaninnies."
"It is said that the Queen has come to love the Commonwealth partly because it supplies her with regualr cheering crowds of flag-waving piccaninnies."
"We don't want our children being taught some rubbish about homosexual marriage"
"Why did we draw so much attention to tricky subjects like homosexuality, aka the Pulpit Poofs issue."

    Enjoy

    And your point is?

Bit confused here Southampton. You ask for evidence, you are given evidence, and then you say "And your point is?" Pickwick explains that they were from an article by Boris, and taken out of context, fair enough. How many times have Ken's quotes been taken out of context? Yet the anti-Ken brigade are always trotting them out as hard fact.

Everyone has their opinion on politics, and most of them will not budge, even when presented with facts that disprove their theories. I try and look at both sides, and I learn from lifes experience. I was a Tory boy through and through as a lad, having seen what they have done over the years I have got more and more left wing. That is not to say the Tories do not have some good ideas (imagine that, being open minded enough to accept that not EVERYTHING the opposition does is wrong) and that's not to say I am enamoured by the Labour party's current policies, or was happy with everything Ken did. But generally I lean towards socialism rather than capitalism, and Boris is clearly a protest vote against the Labour government, rather than an endorsement of his policies (less than 50% of people bothered to vote anyway - shame on them). He has however made some good noises about involving people of other parties in his administration, and we should wait and see how he gets on.

Nice of Ken to offer his help too, although I am sure some on here will see that as an attempt to hold on to power or something, rather than a genuine attempt to help push London forward.

Zone 6 Mayor? So people living in outer London Boroughs (many of whom commute into central London) aren't allowed to vote on issues that effect them as much as those in inner London Boroughs? Isn't this statement rather like saying that inner cities have their Govt cos most of them vote Labour as opposed to the majority of the country that voted Tory at the last General Election?

Sounds to me like a load of left-wing excuse making and fear mongering myself...

I'm a blue through and through, but can honestly say that by and large I think Ken has done a pretty good job, baring a few pretty high profile issues, considering he had to start the whole idea and structure up and running from scratch. I do however think that we needed someone new and hope that Boris gets some really good people around him as there is no doubt he will approach the post in a more consultative fashion, that the "Ken knows best" approach that people have obviously got pissed off with of recent.

I would however like one of our "comrades" to answer that if Boris is such a buffoon and so inept that he shouldn't hold such a position, then why does Ken hold him in such high regard and was happy to nick so many of his ideas that it forced Boris and the Tories stopped announcing them prior to the election?

BTW - BFR what made you write that GH was a cretin for was really no different to the heavily weighted rubbish you've listed off. I'd suggest you take a little of your own medicine before name calling mate
