Yep, but I'd feel more comfortable if we had some defensive minded cover there, if only to shore things up if we get a lead and want to kill the game off.

Semedo is the key, of course.
Defensive injury - and Semedo drops back whether full back or even centre.
Ambrose comes on & ZZ plays next to Holland.
If Holland or Semedo off, again ZZ sits deeper and take your pick - Ambrose, Thomas or Varns come on.
Thomas covers Cookie, Varns up front cover or even wing, Gray if we're not holding the ball up.
We'll see Oggy, I don't disagree with anything you say except that it means moving players around and possibly playing them out of position. All the same I'd rather have Fortune on the bench to add a bit of specialist cover.

Actually, I'm with you on this one, Black Forest ........ we should have Jonny Fortune on the bench here.
Can play centre back or full back.
I wonder whatever happened to Kelly Youga? I would have thought he was useful cover on the bench.
Can play across the backline, probably also left wide midfield, loads of energy & enthusiasm - provide that bit of dynamism should we be chasing the game.
Perhaps Pards is playing politics with a couple of bruised egoes here?
Thomas, Ambrose, Varney & especially Gray probably each think they should be starting - so Pards is placating them by at least including them all in the 16?
We also have Basey to cover at LB/left midfield and Powell if needs be.
I wouldn't read too much into Pardew preferring Thatcher, I think he's right to go with experience.
As for Ambrose et al sitting on the bench when they think they should be starting, this is the flipside of having a large squad, someone has to be left out and it's up to those on the bench to take the few minutes opportunity they might get to press their claim. Pardew certainly likes to have attacking options up his sleeve, although the number of times we've turned around a deficit this season would suggest that perhaps he's packing his bench with strikers/wingers more in hope than expectation.
Gray if he does come on is due a goal, and Thomas too for that matter.
