Not objecting, just trying to dig below the disappointment, I think your last sentence sums it up, it's not the player, it's the style of play used when he is used as a lone front man.
He's scored a decent amount of goals, played very well on most occasions, and is a decent player. I just can't knock him in the same way I could with someone like Thomas or to an extent McLeod
[cite]Posted By: cunningstunt87[/cite]Disappointed - I had to think hard on this but I'm going to give it to ZZ, purely because I expected more from him. He's a far better player than he's showed.
Wow. Nobody has disappointed you more than ZZ? Wow.
I've never rated Thomas or Sam, so I can't say they've disappointed me.
I've said all along that the strikers are poor. At the start of the season I said none of them would get so much as 15 goals. So none of them have disappointed me (though Varney has looked a better striker than I thought he would be).
The defenders overall have been fairly solid bar the odd blip, so they haven't disappointed me.
Holland and Ambrose have been fairly impressive. The loan signings i've not seen enough of.
Disappointed: In the running for me are Thomas, Fortune and (to a lesse extent) Gray. Also, Varney has not been the goalscorer I was hoping he would be - but that's probably more my expectations being unrealistic - and obviously McLeod hasn't exactly shone. Overall though, picking one person, based on the talent and potential we all know is there - it has to be Thomas for me.
Impressed - Weaver, humble pie time, I didnt think I would warm to him after his previous with us but more importantly I didnt think he was any good. He has probably won us 15 points on his own.
Dissapointed - Thomas, because he has more ability in his left toe than Gray, but his attitiude, fitness and desire for the cause has been a massive negative, if he had played 40 games on form this season we could have walked this league.
Gray, Bougherra, Varney, Mcleod were all bought for 2/3 times their proper value, but thats not the individual players fault.
Impressed: The Mou2 and Sam partnership. Hasn't been used much and I know Mou2 is prone to the odd defensive error, but we really look exciting when they play together. They link so well with Sam cutting inside and Mou2 overlapping and they make loads of space for each other. Final ball for both players needs some work, but they are both young and that will improve, they just need to be allowed to play together more often.
Disappointed: Sadly so many to chose from, but I have to go for Halford as he is stopping Mou2 from playing and he looks like he wants the world to swallow him up every time he plays.
Impressed - Holland - what an engine, what heart, what never say die attitude, what a shame a lot of the others don't follow his example. I'm sure he's been drinking that red diesel he puts in his tractors.
Disappointed - Pardew - for changing the team far too often and not allowing certain players a decent run of games. I'm sure we would hve seen some better performances from the likes of Thomas, McLeod and as he is now proving McCarthy.
Impressed - Holland, I thought he'd lost it but he's done us proud this year.
Disappointed - Thomas, I stated at the beginning of the season I thought he could be the difference in many games for us this season but he just hasn't seemed up for it in more ways than one.

Disappointed - Pardew - for changing the team far too often and not allowing certain players a decent run of games. I'm sure we would hve seen some better performances from the likes of Thomas, McLeod and as he is now proving McCarthy.
Disappointed - Gray hasn't looked half the player he was at Burnley. But also Lloyd Sam, this was meant to be the season where he pushed on, but for me it just hasn't come, his played fairly well in a few games but never had that end product for me. And now his injured and i'll doubt will see him again his season.
Impressed: ZZ for his sheer class at times, Varney for his attitude and workrate despite being mucked about by Pards.
Disappointed: Thomas so much talent yet so little end product and, harsh this one, Ambrose. He's scored goals and been involved in others but still has the infuriating tendency to "go missing." A guy with his ability should be bossing games not disappearing.
Impressed: McCarthy, at the begining of the season I wondered what Pard's must have been smoking when he signed him but since his return I've been nothing but impressed with his passion and commitment in games. One of the few players in the side that actaully looks bothered if we don't win.
Disappointed: Racon, I'm not disappointed with him, more the fact that he hasn't been given a chance in the team. Everytime I've seen him I've thought he's looked good and should be given a game.
Impressed - Paddy, I slaughted him at the start of the season however he's certainly turned things around to the point where he's first choice centre half. Fair play to him
Disappointed - Gray, looks at the moment like a shocking waste of money (I'm sure he's not).....also plenty of others that have also been mentioned in this thread
impressed - weaver has been a pleasant surprise for me, but zz would definatley be a prem player but for the work permit thingy.
disappointed - has to be gray. we paid something like 1.5m for a 32 year old. he was top scorer at a club in our division, and has to have been bought to make an instant impact. he hasn't.
[cite]Posted By: WhenIwasLittleBoy[/cite]Impressed: Paddy, after a shakey start, he came back for the Palace game, where he played well, was then bombed out for the next game, sat and waited for opertunity to come around, never publically moaned and has come back, played well in every game, fought for the team, stuck up for players, acknowledged the fans, reminds of Simon Webster.
Not sure about the Simon Webster comparison, I'd say more like Stuart Balmer - had a total mare in his first couple of games, but turned into a Charlton stalwart. Also, not someone I'd want to cross, whereas Webbo seemed distinctly less scary.
Disapointed: This award has to go to Thomas. After being at the club for a few years he has so much promise but never delivers, he can no longer hide behind the excuse of him being a young player, he haas the talent but he is not using it enough, another disapointment is how he conducts himself off the pitch, someone get hold of him and tell that what he has is what most people would give their right arm for,a footballers carrer will finish when he is 33/34 he can then go clubbing and have as many fights in a pizza hut after that as he wants until then train hard every day, enjoy your football and enetertain the crowd,
I met someone who claimed to be an old friend of his mum the other week, and she asked me what I thought of him when it came up that I was a Charlton fan. It took me a few seconds to come up wth a tactful answer.
Matty's been great ...... if only all the squad had his kind of attitude and application,
we would be worldbeaters .......well, in this division, anyway. lol
Despite what some have been saying, ZZ has all season been well worth his place - but in combination with Holland, the pairing is undoubtedly lightweight together in centre mid. ZZ willing though he is playing deeper, is far more effective playing further forward and is able to plunder goals.
We are still lacking that physically strong and dominating box to box player, ballwinner, good vision and creative.
Semedo may eventually be the answer but in that role presently he appears too cautious.
Kinsella was replaced by Parker.
But we are still awaiting Parker's replacement.
It cost us relegation last season.
And this season, may cost us promotion.
Saw Sean Davis playing for Pompey reserves last night and thought that he could be just the player we needed in the centre of the park. Loves a tackle, good passing range and will run all day! Not sure if he's been injured or just not getting a game for them at the moment otherwise maybe we could have got him for a few games?
Impressed: ZZ has begun to show his ability although perhaps needs a better partnership, would have been Reid if still here..
Disappointed: Yes I'm afraid its Thomas, never was much of a crosser of the ball but at this level he should be beating people more easily, and getting into the box as he did often during one spell in the prem. Get in the box and shoot mate... then Fortune for similar reasons, Varney, then Gray
Impressed : Bougherra. Think we've missed him massively the last few weeks
Disapointed : ZZ . Considering how many people rate him he seems to deliver consistantly low quality performances and I think the biggest problem the team has is the weakness in the centre of midfield.
Impressed : Iwelumo. He is unfairly slagged off by a lot on here. Some say he has an awful first touch but IMO this is just a stereotype for someone his size. He actually has a great touch, as you can see from the first two goals he scored at the valley. Jason Euell had a much worse touch. Furthermore, he works his socks off and has won some important games for us this season. My favourite being Southampton, what a day that was.
Disappointed : Gray. I can't actually remember him having a shot on goal at the Valley. Has showed he can hold the ball up, but hasn't displayed any threat whatsoever. Don't know if it's the way we are playing or him suffering an immense lack of form, but either way it's more than disappointing.
IMPRESSED: Holland, thought his legs had gone last year and wasn't sure he had another season left in him. Also ZZ. He's shown some class this year with his deft touches and goal scoring. Youga aswell to colour me triple impressed
Having said both Holland and ZZ though I still think they are too lightweight as a midfield two!
DISAPPOINTED: Gray. He's been a horror signing especially considering 1.5m would have got us the younger ebanks-blake. I've gotta say Fortune aswell. I expected him to be a much bigger presence than he has been in this division.
I'm also disappointed mou2 hasn't been given more of a chance and that Varney hasnt been the 20 goal a season striker he was billed as. Although that is far from Varney's fault and I hope this talk of him leaving isn't true.

I know others who seriously don't get the fuss about ZZ, so i'm not suprised. One for another thread though.

Disappointed - Thomas, poor attitude and failing to stamp his ability on players who he should be a cut above
Gray - just hasn't clicked
Disappointed - Pardew - for changing the team far too often and not allowing certain players a decent run of games. I'm sure we would hve seen some better performances from the likes of Thomas, McLeod and as he is now proving McCarthy.

So having anally gone through these postings, I've put together a team based on the players that you say have impressed you:
Weaver
Moo2
Bougherra
McCarthy
Youga
Sam
Semedo
Holland
ZZ
Varney
Ambrose
Sub: Sodje
It's possibly not that well balanced wide and maybe a little lightweight up front - but could this be the team YOU voted for?
Not sure about the Simon Webster comparison, I'd say more like Stuart Balmer - had a total mare in his first couple of games, but turned into a Charlton stalwart. Also, not someone I'd want to cross, whereas Webbo seemed distinctly less scary.

It's that obvious, isn't it ..... ???

Paddy Mac probably in both camps

DISAPOINTED - The whole fecking team to be honest. More quality than our position would imply.
