Impressed / Disappointed

edited March 2008 in General Charlton
Lets see how everyone differs.

Pick one player who has impressed you the most this season for one reason or another. Doesn't have to be who you think is the player of the year.

Equally, pick one player who has disappointed you the most this season, and why. Try and keep it constructive.

Impressed - Ambrose - despite a large minority being on his back he has delivered goals and assists. He also talks like he cares about the club on his website and in the press.

Disappointed - Thomas - thought he would set this division a light this year with skill, assists and goals. Unfortunately the only thing he seems to have set alight was the hob on his oven to cook some burgers. No end product.
  • Impressed - Sodje - effort and commitment even when not having a good game. Showed spirit, tenacity and flair. Also to Cory for coming back from yet another injury.

Disappointed - Has to be Gray. Clearly a much better player (13 goals for Burnley) than we have seen of him so far. Still hope that a goal will turn things around and we see the best of him. Maybe being "the replacement for Reid" was too much expectation for him.
  • Impressed: Kelly Youga - started as fifth choice left back after Thatcher, Basey, Powell and Gibbs and loaned out realistically until his contract expired at the end of the season. Ok he might not currently be in the starting XI but has done enough to suggest that he has a future at Charlton.

Disappointed: Jerome Thomas - has the skill and the ability to be a premiership player and at CCC level should be one of the division's top players, but has been in and out the side with too many unexplained illnesses injuries which masks what I suspect is a poor attitude to training and the club.
  • Im with WSS for his choices

Thoams should really shine but has failed to deliver
  • Impressed - Bougherra has absoloutely everything to make him a top centre half. It's not surpsrising that we have collapsed since his absence. He had a very erratic start but has got better & better as the season has gone on.

Dis-appointed - Fortune, for someone with as much Premier League experience to make so little impression on the first team is nothing short of scandalous.

Impressed - Varney - think he's been a breath of fresh air when not being made a scapegoat for shit performances. He runs his bollocks off for 90 minutes yet always seems first to be subbed.- ok that doesn't make sense - run his nuts off when he is on the field - you know what i meant LOL

Disappointed - Thomas we all now he's got the game just hasn't got the desire and Andy Gray - he must have something but we haven't found it yet
  • Impressed - Holland - Injured early on but come back, rolled his socks up and worked his nuts off every minute in a Charlton shirt. At times he's been the only one worth having on the pitch. 33 now, lacks some quality but makes up with hi through sheer hard graft. 11 Hollands and we'd have won this league.

Disappointed - Iwelumo. Apart from his goals i think he offers nothing to the side. He's been played up front alone but he can't win any balls in the air because he won't jump, he can't hold the ball up and he hasn't got any pace. When he plays up front with another e.g Varney he hasn't got the abillity or mind to hit the space varney makes with his runs, he's easy to mark hasn't got a first touch and all in all i think he's absoloutely apalling. Say's a lot when he's our top scorer.

Impressed - Weaver - really wasn't sure about the signing, but apart from the odd dodgy moment he has been very reliable and solid, and committed.

Disappointed - McLeod - thought he had the potential to be a gem and the next Baby Bent. Maybe he still does....?
  • Impressed - Paddy MacCarthy. Thought earlier in the season he was the worst central defender i have seen here for years, yet has come back into the side with a terrific attitude and has been one of our most solid performers in recent months. Not convinced he is a long-term player to take us forward, but admire the fact he has got his head on and has given it everything he has.

Disappointed - Andy Gray. Don't think he is a bad player, and may come good next year. But he was signed mid-season to help push us on short-term and the opposite has happened. All strikers go through lean spells goal-wise, but the fact he so rarely looks like scoring is a major concern.
  • Impressed - Holland - Has shown energy and commitment every time I have seen him play

Disappointed - Iwelumo - For a big man he is not that good in the air. He probably doesnt get a fair deal from refs but then so many fouls seem to revolve around him and break up play. Its probably that I dont like the style of play with him in the side as much as him personally.

  • Impressed: Paddy, after a shakey start, he came back for the Palace game, where he played well, was then bombed out for the next game, sat and waited for opertunity to come around, never publically moaned and has come back, played well in every game, fought for the team, stuck up for players, acknowledged the fans, reminds of Simon Webster.

Disapointed: This award has to go to Thomas. After being at the club for a few years he has so much promise but never delivers, he can no longer hide behind the excuse of him being a young player, he haas the talent but he is not using it enough, another disapointment is how he conducts himself off the pitch, someone get hold of him and tell that what he has is what most people would give their right arm for,a footballers carrer will finish when he is 33/34 he can then go clubbing and have as many fights in a pizza hut after that as he wants until then train hard every day, enjoy your football and enetertain the crowd,
  • Impressed - bougherra -see ketmans comments
Disappointed - Mcleod - for what he cost it scares me how little ability he's shown so far.....shocking imo

Impressed: Reid if I'm allowed ex-player, otherwise Ambrose.
Both give us class going forward, Reidy more so of course, they stand out because there is so little "quality" elsewhere in the team. Bougherra, Semedo & ZZ are perhaps the only other quality players.

Disappointed: Thomas, he has the skill to tear up this league, but he seems to be more interested in clubbing and missing games with a runny nose. When he does turn up he looks fancy and delivers little.
  • Impressed - Bougherra, for the reasons above

Disappointed - Thomas, for all the reasons above
  • Impressed has to be ZZ for me those touches of class have shone this year

Disapointed I am going to go with Mcleod wasnt given the best of chances but never grabbed the chance wehen he was given it
  • Impressed.....Has to be Paddy McCarthy. I thought and said he was a carthorse earlier this season....how wrong he proved me. A player with heart and commitment, and along with Bougherra the ideal centre back pairing for this league.

Disapointed.....all the usual characters, but for me it has to be the tactical naivity of Alan Pardew. I just wish he would get his head down and get on with it instead of raising our expectations. Happy to persevere for now, however.

The perennial Thomas, Sinclair, Cook, Halford, McLeod (albeit in limited appearances)and especially Gray flatter to deceive.
  • All this thread is proving to me is how appallingly inconsistent individual performances - and hence the team's - have been...so many different candidates for both, and I bet if we'd asked it two months ago lots of answers would have been different...
  • Impressed...... jim melroses for his ability to get the odd commentary around the flippin world

Disappointed......CAFC for the fact that us fans any further than the oak obviously arent worth the paper we are written on.....

    hence can't give proper opinion.....

(just writting than has really wound me up!)
  • must be something about that Australian sunshine that has completely puggled you and Tel's ability to pick 'one player' :-)
  • Maybe thats exactly what I need right now Smudge....a dose of sunshine....only another four weeks and I can whinge from afar ;-)

  • Impressed:- McCarthy for me as well, was told he could possibly leave but wanted to stasy and fight for his place. Has given our team some much needed fight.

Disappointed:- Toddy came in showed ealry promise but has been quiet of late.
  • scores so far I think (taking first name mentioned, exlcuding Reidy):

    Impressed:
    3 ... Ambrose, Bougherra, McCarthy
    2 ... Holland
1 ... Sodje, Varney, Weaver, Youga, ZZ

    Disappointed:
    8 ... Thomas
    3 ... McLeod
    2 ... Iwelumo, Gray
    1 ... Fortune
  • Impressed: Semedo, especially early on when he was actually starting every week. Adapted quickly to a new holding position, new culture and new style of football. All that for a freebie whose hardly played in his career, and who I thought was brought as a back up centre back.

Disappointed: Thomas, always either injured/sick/inconsistent. I actually thought he had a decent game on Saturday, let's hope it's the start of seeing some form from him.
  • Impressed: If i had to pick one i'd say Holland purely for his drive and old-skool club passion which is sadly lacking in a lot of players in a lot of teams. Also Paddy, bougherra and semedo have impressed me a lot (notice how these are all defensive minded players?says a lot.)

Disappointed: Thomas with Iwelumo a close second. Thomas for all the aforementioned reasons, and Iwelumo for his poor finishingi I know its not right to pin our situation on a miss here and there, and credit to him he got our winners at bristol and saints, but the miss at coventry and the miss at home to watford were inexcusable, also remember one shocking moment at home to stoke form half a yard out. However the biggest disappointment for me thus far is that Toddy got injured, really think he had a touch of class, particularly after fatty left he could have been dynamite, not sure if he'll come back firing either now, 2 injuries like that in your ca\reer at over 30 cannot be good.
  • I don't get the Iwelumo disappointment, for a bloke who cost nothing he's worked his nuts off, got battered left right and centre, scored goals and is a honest footballer.
  • Impressed: several players for a few games, but nobody consistently.

Disappointed: the lack of progress with our youngsters. Last season Randolph went on loan to league 1, and played one prem match for us; this year he's only in league 2. Sankofa has been on loan in league 1 before, and started several prem games last year; this year league 2. Nobody wants Basey or Racon on loan, and I don't know why.
  • Impressed - Weaver. His importance to the team is so underrated. How many goals have been his fault this season? When has he whinged or moaned? Pure class in my opinion.

Disappointed - I had to think hard on this but I'm going to give it to ZZ, purely because I expected more from him. He's a far better player than he's showed.

Wow. Nobody has disappointed you more than ZZ? Wow.

Thought somebody would object to my submission.

The fact that he cost nothing is irrelevant. Thats purely down to his previous contract.
He batters as much as he gets battered.
And I would be disappointed if a striker didnt get goals.

I cant disagree on effort and honesty. And as I posted its as much the style of play when he is in the side as the man himself.

Maybe in your case imtpm but i think players like Mcleod and Gray get lambasted far too much and this is mainly due to their price tag that they have very little, if no control over. Anyway thats an aside.

    ZZ most disappointing. Wow.
