The club will probably ask someone to buy it for them then want it loaned to them to put in the museum.
  • It still seems quite a lot of money to me.

Good luck to Steve Jones but I dont want Charlton or Charlton Life paying over the odds.

And while you're at it, could you pay for the museum as well.

    And why not?

    you're kidding, right jimmy?
  • Yep we'll get Reading to buy it, then loan it off them.
  • Feel really sorry for Steve. He wouldn't really want to sell his shirt or medal but needs must. Playing for us was the pinnicle of his career. His sports memoribilia business went down the shute due to Victoria Beckham. She accused that shop in Bluewater of selling a signed David Beckham item when it wasn't his signature. The whole shebang took a major nosedive and Steve went bust as a result. Ironically when it went to court it was proved that it was Beckham's signature but by then the damage had been done.

I know it is small beer but could he not be offered a matchday host position?

Surely he never gets bored of talking about that day

  • I'm assuming this was Henry's doing. If it was well done for the increased exposure.

Good on the club, it is a shame that a footballer who tried to do something other than sit on his arse has come a cropper.

Is that definitely right? I remember the story but didn't know that it was Steve Jones's shop and didn;t know that it went to the wall because of it. Surely he would be due damages?
  • No- i think he means that kind of business in general after that particular court case. Im friends with the lawyer who acted on behalf of the shopowners, and who beat posh spice. he's a season ticket holder at charlton no less.
  • Oh yeah. Der. Didn't really read that properly.

I see there is a bid on this now!

I wonder who that might be?...............the club?

Just noticed the feedback star next to the bidder - says 500-999 so must be a serial bidder or a trader of some sort I would imagine!

No, nothing to do with me or at least not directly. Personally would have preferred it not to have gone on the bulletin but it's Charlton related news so can see why they have included it.
  • If it goes ahead, put me down for a bullseye.

Not at all. What are we all going to do with it if we buy it together? The idea that we all have it for one day a year is totally unworkable.

For me, the only solution is for us to buy it and donate it to the club museum. We could even have a plaque reading
'Kindly donated by members of Charlton Life website'
Then it sits safely in a place where all supporters can see it, ready for the day when Steve Jones (or descendant) sorts himself out and can buy it back from us, at which point we donate the money to Demelza House.

What else is this site for if not a cause like this?

In any case, WE HAVE TO MAKE A DECISION SOON, or some other filthy rich git who cares nothing about Charlton might get his hands on it.

I make you right on this one, Jimmy

  • Come on guys.

    We need to do something.

Let's stop f***ing around with talk of paying seven quid each.
We need to find 26 people to put up 100 quid each here.
Ask everyone you see at the match today. If we can get 30 people and bid 3000 quid all the better.
So let's aim for 30 to donate 100 quid each and I'll be the first:

    1. jimmymelrose
  • 2, T.C.E
  • Cool, that was quick. Well done. 2 gone, 28 to go!
  • Remember of course that if we get more than 30 it will cost us less per person.
Ideally I'd like us to get 60 people and then we can pay 50 each.
There seem to be be so many people on here that care about Charlton that I see no reason why we can't get over a hundred. We just need to make everyone see this thread or give people a call.
I've already called Large Addick and I'll give Golfy a ring.

Can anyone suggest how we would organise this to pay e-bay on time? We need to work this out and I don't have a solution for this. This for me is the major sticking point. Suggestions please?
  • Good idea jimmy, and this is certainly the kind of thing I like to see come out of the community here, but I don't think the whole thing can be organised in time. There's less than 48hrs left. Anything like JustGiving are gonna take a percentage of the money raised, and there's no guarantee that the 2550 needed would be enough.

so is £3000 going to be the maximum bid?
  • Who knows? Could go anywhere.

Perhaps, but we have to brainstorm ideas like this; someone like me may have an idea like this but together we might find improvements to the idea.
  • Agree. But I don't have any ideas for collecting money in time. Anyone else?

We have to think about this at the same time as getting names on the list.
One solution without the other won't get us anywhere.

    More names please?
