my take on last night

just got back from burnley and can't be arsed to read through all posts but here's my take.

i drove up there yesterday and it took over 5 hrs due to accident on M1.
we got to digs, walked to cricket club bar and got caught in the mother of all hail storms.
cold & soaking wet only had an hour in ther 'til k/o.
the game was i wont bother.
even the 8 (yes eight) and a half hour drive back today (M6 closed, moved 9 miles in 3 & 3/4 hours) isn't the most depresssing thing about the trip.
that would have to be when at the final whistle went there were scenes reminiscent of chesterfield last season.
the players had to walk off to our end, as the tunnel is there.
we had our own supporters arguing and literally offering eachother out.
it looked like mcarthy reacted to (some of) the fans abuse. he also stopped sodje from going over to react to something.
the people i felt for most were the few chinese fans we have. i've seen them at quite a few away games, and this occassion was probably the closest they'd been to their 'david beckham'. as zz walked off he went to approach them and was also stopped. they then turned round to find themselves in the middle of the 'i pay my money so i can have my say' mob, and the people protesting at that them doing that mob.(christ i'm useless at explaining things in writing)

anyway, as a result i have never felt so distant from the players and some of our supporters as i do now.
if the 200 or so die hard supporters can't unite, then i think we are in trouble.

sorry if these have been discussed on other threads.

  • Fair play you for going.

Sounds like I missed a great night?
  • At times like this I think the players would do well to spend some time reading this site.

wow, i didn't realise we had a chinese take away as well....
  • I encountered some thoroughly unpleasant Charlton fans at the last away match I went to which was Spurs away under Les Reed.

Fortunately they displayed their commitment to the cause by leaving when we went 3-1 down.

I do wonder if that element deters family people from travelling if they can afford it. Another reason to add to OOH AHH's list perhaps :-)
  • i was there len,we had a terrible turnout that day.
  • Sorry to hear that mate, I think we are all in a bit of a state at the moment....dont know what the simple answer is, but I guess something inspiring on the pitch would help. Sorry you had such a crap journey too.
  • shame PBS, sounds like you'd/we'd have been better off if the game was called off;-)
  • i am caught in two minds regarding the booing of the team. My mates were i guess the so called I paid my money lot down the front on Tuesday in Burnley and i was down there with them.
They were furious and rightly so i thought the performance was poor and do not agree with this super strike crap i keep hearing, as i saw on another post the goal came about by us not closing the ball down.
They were right to be angry the performance was poor and we lacked ideas again.

Now i was down the front telling the players to get their heads up and show some heart why others were f ing and blinding, and some throwing their shirt on the pitch. Once I turned round I got called a wan!#er by betty hutchings and her little side kick and then I was the one offered out by a bloke i had never seen before. That conduct for me is worse than these pampered players gettin a few swear words directed at them
  • Im concerned that we hear one thing from those people who took the trouble to travel in crap conditions and what we hear on the OS and Pardew in particular. I balance that at times by reading posts on here with games Ive attended and sometimes we see the game through different eyes. Sorry to hear friction amongst our own fans.....seems like McCarthy and Sodje reacted too.....thats even worse...especially when people go out of there way to pay good money and follow the team away.
  • i think sodje was more concerned as his misses was at the front and wasn't allowed to go past the stewards so she was stuck near the group of us down the front. i dont mind if players react, in a way you want them to as it shows that they care, the way they should react is to go out on saturday and put on a performance, after all thats what we all want.

As for the friction between the fans, i am not to bothered about it myself, after all you cant like everyone. But what i do take offence to is being called names and then when you question the reasoning behind it they ignore you, fair play to betty when i walked down the stairs she was at the bottom and i explained what i was doing down the front and she apologised. As fans we need to understand that not everyone is going to have the same opinion and live with it.

  • Fair play to paddy! Our fans have to higher expectations!Wake up people...burnley is a tough place to go to!We have been wrapped up in cotton wool in the premiership for to long now and we have forgotten that! From what i heard on the radio we were the much better side, although fair play to u mate for making the long journey up there!
I have always thought it and now it will come out....we have got some fucking strange supporters at charlton, really weird and i thought the mugs on soccer am on saturday confirmed that!
No wonder other clubs laugh at our support!
For the actual pre premiership die hard charlton fans, just stick at it guys, these plastics will probably fuck off next season anyway!
  • Totally agree that we should be able to vent our feelings at a game....its not anybody else's business, so when people then object and start offering people out, thats when it becomes offensive. Thats not to say Id advocate booing, but I do understand it...I was willing the players to come over against Blackpool the other week and probably on reflection its a good thing that they didnt.
  • Paddy did the right thing, although at first it may seem out of order that the travelling fans cant have their say....it wouldnt of been pretty if the team had gone over to the fans!

That doen't make sense. How many "premiership plastics" would be bothered to go all the way to Burnley in a Tuesday night?
  • Well some must do because in my whole life as a charlton supporter i have never seen one fight between charlton fans!Only has it been this season...southampton and burnley that there have been reports of bust ups between fellow fans! Now even if they are not plastics, it does mean that some of our die hards are not all there in the noggin!

ive only had my season ticket since the premiership and i fooking resent that.

I reckon i've seen more fights between Charlton fans than i have with the opposition !!
  • Ah man im not saying everyone who hasnt had a season ticket pre premiership is a plastic!Im not sure what im going on about now actually...but all i know is it has only been in recent seasons that there has been on more than once occasion...trouble between charlton fans!We have too many supporters who just expect us to beat everyone and i wish they would fuck off and love charlton for who we are and where we have come from!
  • get the suzi sausage on him curb it!

thats 9 years a season ticket holder B, hardly fairweather fan!

we were at chesterfield away last season for one thing.....think that gives us enough brownie points for the time being to give him a dig!

thats not counting the other long drawn out journeys we've done for the club(!) anyway, he didn't mean it, so we'll play nicely for now :-)

  • Ah whatever all i know is i will always get behind the boys no matter what! And if there is fighting between our fans well that sums up our support in one!

thats probably not necessarily true. 10 years ago, there wasn't so many blogs, forums, mediums for things to be discussed. I'm sure that if i didn' tcome onto this forum, or others, then i wouldn't know half of what goes on at games, even if i'm at them. at blackpool there were things going on feet away from us that we had to be told about later, so the other 1000 or so supports down the other end, would have had a clue. the same at chesterfield last season for example (the reason that has sprung into my head today because there were 40 or so charlton fans giving it to dowie and the players as we just went through to the next round of the cup on penalties...we won ffs! i'll still never understand that logic.
if we weren't sat here all day discussing it, we probably wouldn't give it as much thought as we can do, hence why we analyse every miniscule thing, gossip, argue all sorts about charlton, because we can. I dare say 10 years ago, there were a couple of fanzines, that weren't really a 2 way thing. a few columists and possible a mail bag fan letter for a few people to get their point across, but hardly representative of 17k ST holders. this forum itself is only representative of a handful of the valley crowd/fanbase. the supporters director vote is reflection of that. my family didn't even know what it was about, but have been going to charlton for 40 years. but they don't go online.

sorry, not having a pop at you, but this then and now argument has a lot of flaws.
  • the sausage has spoken, that was enough to put the fear of khan in me.
  • No thats fair enough mate and i apologise for saying that in the first place because it came across in way different to how i wanted it to!But i really do think to many of our supporters have the premiership expectation in them and that can only be down to people that had no recall of what it was like before, now im not saying that includes everybody who didnt go to charlton before then! But the amount of people at the valley who start booing from the first five minutes...its as if it is weekly routine for them and it really fucks me off!Me and my dad have a four hour round trip to the valley every home game and listening to these idiots just makes it so less enjoyable!I just dont understand why we have so many booers...ok the performances have not been to good recently but for example....(think it was the hull game) lloyd sams first cross of the game fell at the near post and was cleared....the amount of people that started booing....it was unbelievable and quite frankly embarrassing!
  • Its always gone off between Charlton fans. From The Welcome Inn days into the Covered End and upto now. Some was tribal, some political, and some out of frustration. Football used to be about passion and belonging this sometimes comes out the wrong way in people.

As for booing etc well i guess it is something to do with the life style that 2 days players have. Most of em i wouldnt piss on if they were in flames. They treat people like shit and deserve what they get back when it goes wrong.
  • I actually think some fans want a bad performance so they can boo, they are morons, I really do not know how they operate upstairs.
  • Its the booers fighting the cheerers. I tend to find the more aggressive fan boo's.

i cant stand booing and would end up having a row with "booers"... if i werent being told off by Tavern. He gets frightened when i start "oi-ing" people.

I'd rather go down to the concourse early then listen to boos as it makes me cringe to the tops of my toes.
  • [cite]Posted By: CHG[/cite]I actually think some fans want a bad performance so they can boo, they are morons, I really do not know how they operate upstairs.

    lol
  • I will never boo, ever, unless at a pantomime maybe (with the kids).
  • i cant understand booing during the game. I might go mental at some player or move break down, but dont know why people bo during game.On the other hand if its total kak like against Preston then i might give vent to booing at final whistle.
