Had this email from an overseas Addick and his view of the season and our squad:
Earlier today I read some comments from a former West Ham player, Julian Dicks, suggesting people take a hard look at the eleven guys on the pitch more so than the manager, when attempting to ascertain why and when things go sour as they recently have with West Ham.
Curbishley did yeoman service at Charlton in building and maintaining a competitive squad, with little money, for many years before the lustre wore off; is a good manager in my mind, as is Alan Pardew.
Everybody goes on about Charlton being a "Premiership" side, but if you look at the entire roster from top to bottom, I am hard pressed to find a bona fide, proven Premiership player of any real quality. Yes, they have players who were in the Premiership (Holland, Ambrose, Zheng, Weaver, Thomas, Bougherra, Fortune, Thatcher and Powell) but every one of those has been held up to close scrutiny in the recent past as to their effectiveness and most were directly involved in taking the team down last season.
The real Premiership players from the Charlton side are doing just that with Portsmouth (Big Herm), Tottenham (Darren Bent), Middlesbrough (Young) and Sunderland (Reid).
Charlton is basically a very young squad with a number of players whose potential is yet to be established and it is not necessarily going to be a one year turn-around back to the bigs. In fact, from where I sit, I think the club would be better off taking at least one more season to do their team building, before re-entering the fray at the top. Even if they add three or four big names, I don't think the core squad is anywhere near ready to compete at the Premiership level.
Pardew has to give everybody a shot at showing their stuff, but in doing so has undoubtedly interrupted any chance of continuity of quality play from week-to-week. Rome and football clubs are not built in a day.
We're just not scoring goals are we? All those forwards & wingers we have bought & we just can't put the ball in the net. God, it's just so frustrating to listen to!!
