[cite]Posted By: northstandsteve[/cite] however with the perverse parachute payments this year I don't think we would be able to compete with the 3 relegated clubs.
Understand the thrust of your post entirely. But on the above snippet, all i would say is just because the three relegated clubs will get a bigger parachute, don't use that as an example that they will be in a better position than us, and other clubs. The likelihood is that they have overspent already on the knowledge that if the worst happens, they will have the parachute to soften it. I'm sure the likes of Bristol City, Palace etc said the same about us, Watford and Sheffield United in the Summer, but it hasn't done any of us that much good.
The bit of extra money may help, but there is no guarantee that it will be used wisely.
[cite]Posted By: Reamsofverse[/cite]Amazing views can anybody tell me where we are going to get the money from next year to strengthen the side we have now if we don't go up?
The relegated clubs will recieve even more parachute money than ever next time around, the easiest way back is the 1st season I think, WBA generated money last season by being in contention all year then generating money from the play off final and have dominated this year as a result.
I cannot say that we are good enough to do the same.
Alot of people have lost site of the fact that the free season ticket offer was not just about being a nice gesture to the fans it was clearly done because the board needd a quick fix financially, they cannot offer the same next year the fans won't bite so personally I just cannot see how Pardew will be given the money that it will take to assemble a promotion winning squad.
If we are in this league next season gates will also drop so what is left ?..... selling more players to balance the books I would imagine and that means that improving current players will not be for the eventual benefit of this football club, they will be sold to even out ongoing losses.
Most of that is probably true Reams so what's your solution mate? Spend what we haven't got? Mortgage the ground? Pray for divine intervention?
It has been a huge ask for a club like ours with 6 years or so in the Premier League and all the costs that that produces to fall out of the league, trim the sails and build a team capable of winning promotion. West Brom is not the best example because they had to cut less deeply than us. Watford have probably been able to invest, on the other hand Sheffield Utd have not been able to get things together.
We have had a faltering season, we're fifth in the league, we have to play all our rivals at home. We've just beaten the team above us, it's still all to play for. Let get some perspective on things.
3 championship clubs are going to reap the financial rewards of the premiership next year. how anybody can say they would prefer other clubs to recieve that benifit is beyond me.
No one has any ideas what happens the season after that... if we get th s&*( kicked out of us so be it we can try and rebuild and come back up, if we don't go up we are on an absolute financial tightrope where if we dont make it we will be selling of all the young talent to rivals.....
As no doubt we all now realise, it's all about money to sustain the club at it's present level let alone 'move up to the next level'.
Charlton owe it to themselves as a club to get promotion this season. Sure, the team we have now isn't ready to survive next season in the Prem ...... but neither was the promotion team of 97/98.
That team was relegated first time but bounced back by largely keeping the squad together - and club finances reinforced by parachute money.
If we should scrape promotion this season but next suffer instant relegation, then at least we'd be armed with Prem income and increased parachute money. You can bet your life that Richard Murray would budget for just that scenario.
So we become a yo-yo club. Having messed up last season, it's probably the most realistic chance we have to re-establish ourselves in the Prem.
We've got two shots at promotion before finances dictate we revert once again to becoming a 'nowhere club'.
Our best chance is this season, whether the team is ready or not.
Im quite happy to go up, come down and go up again myself.....makes life a lot more interesting. Lets face it, in the prem its all about survival, and down here we have something to aim for.....so Im happy to have a season up, another one down, and so on.....Ive not enjoyed my football as much as this for a long time. Money sadly, does make the world go round....
[cite]Posted By: AFKA Bartram[/cite]Isn't it soul destroying though that the bulk of the arguments on here are based on one thing.
Money.
The game should never of been allowed to get like this
So soul destroying. The amount I read on here about sugar daddies being needed (whether they have any affinity for the club or not) and football clubs being run as a business and needing to go up for financial purposes - and I'm not saying people are wrong just that I wholeheartedly agree AFKA. What a shame it's come to this. Do you think the bunch of lads kicking a ball around near Eastmoor Street all got together and decided to form a football club as there could be a shed load of money in it and they particularly liked the idea of being part time accountants?!
Everything is quantified by money rather than sporting achievement. You win the Play-offs, it's worth £30m. You make the Champions League, it's worth £40m a minnow makes the 5th round of the cup and makes a trip to one of the big four it's worth £xm. What about celebrating the fact that they've exceeded expectations or won a football match or a trophy rather than added £xm to the bank balance?!
I think that's why games like Friday night are so important, it's not about money, it's about a sporting battle with your local rivals, bragging rights and pride in your team. (I just hope they don't screw it up and we have to resort to moaning about the lack of effort considering the money they're on!).

there's a 'we're 5th in the league' quote in there ..love it....
i'd have accepted a 5-0 defeat to them if we'd have finished in the play offs and them not
millwall have got a much better record against us than probably any club who we've played that much but i know which club is the bigger better more successful one over the years

Now if it was Aladdin on the other hand, I might listen to what he has to say.
Nice one PITL - like it.

If Satan was one of Pards's signings, he would have been booed off the pitch........
or from the Bloke Behind Me, "Come on, Satan, you useless tw&t..........you're CRAP!"
I bet he'd be hopeless at crosses too.
