I only went to the final - I was a student at the time of these matches and missed all midweek games.
I seem to remember taking some stick from my friends for the low crowds, though attendance at Selhurst was never good other than for a few London derby games and the matches vs Man U, Liverpool etc.
I remember Steve Thompson doing his best to fire them all up...and he was a big fella when someone as small as me was standing next to him !!, and then him and Bob Bolder were the two who chatted with me in the tunnel. Think Billy Wright was the guest of honour that day ?
The changing rooms were big but were in a state of disrepair......oh and Charlton didn't even give me a kit, I had to buy it myself (well I had a shirt anyway, but had to buy black shorts and socks)
That was the last game my Grandad ever went to before he passed away.
I was at the Norwich game and final. I really couldn't have been arsed with the other two games, but full credit to those that went. I always think that these two games and the Huddersfield 7-6 are matches when if everyone was there that said they were there, then the crowds would have been about 25,000!
feckin was .I will have untold amounts with ya it was open. Both games it woz open, used to booze in Crystals and only went in Sainsbury's twice for both Bradford and Birmingham

Oh Stevie, Stevie, Steve - don't bite so easilly mate!
;o)
Here's a question for ya then - and no looking up the answer: Name the player who made a goalscoring debut for the club in the Birmingham game but never played another first team game? Go on, just for fun like.
F**k me Dave - at least give young Steve a minute to prove he's proper Charlton! (Yes, by the way!)
OK another one. Which other Charlton youngster made his debut that night (as a sub - I think) and got on my (75) bus to the ground before the game with his boots and went down the back to sit with Geoffrey Thomas, Carl Leaburn and a few other young bluds?!
LOL no m8 just the right era,not wanting to blow my trumpet about being a massive Charlton fan,I went to the first leg of F.A. YOUTH CUP FINAL at selhurst that year against Coventry 0-0 wasn't our captain MAUGE.Remember him playin for Bury.

yer like they would remember. You can't even remember Saturday night you plank.Watch yer back tomorrow night.Or you might get one of the clown's custard pies.
:-) Well I was there....I honestly cant remember if the Sainsburys was open.....I had my season ticket in that stand, but my minds eye is telling me I was in the Arthur Waite.....I got the special issue "Final" scarf out just now....gawd its a low key affair...bit like the lousy 12,000 turnout we had at the final :-)
The Sainsbury's end was closed for those two games but OPEN for the Norwich game in the semi, the only reason I remember that is that I was a Sainsbury's end Season Ticket holder & was quite miffed when I had to stand with the neanderthals for those two games. The away fans were even in the pen next to us. Match Programmes were in Black & white & were about eight pages big.
we played a league cup tie when they put away fans next to us,one of which went to penalties and was aginst bradford i think.but I stood in the Sainsbury's for them 2 games and the arthur minute for the norwich game.

BTW, I can vouch for NSS, he's Charlton through & through (even if he does like a moan every now and then !)
He may be Charlton Dave, but he clearly never went to both of those 800 crowd games. You know it, I know it, and Ringo there certainly knows it.
*sits back, lights pipe, waits for chomp*
Good call Steve - good bloody call, Yes, it was Mickey Bennett - but tell me, did you look it up? did you? did you?
But how did you know he was on my bus?????????
'Johnny Come Lately' NSS fully exposed....
