When we dropped out of the top flight I said to my family and friends I doubted Charlton would return in my lifetime. I hoped I was being a miserable doom-monger, but it's looking more and more likely I will be proved right. This game was one of the greatest - it really was like a dream. I had the official VHS copy of it which is now in my mates house in Spain (as he still had VHS and I don't).
Happy 20th anniversary everyone. An unforgettable day and on my 26th birthday. I'm laid up with Covid for my 46th birthday today. I wonder if Jason is aware it was 20 years ago today. Can still vividly see him running clear and tucking away our 4th goal.
We decided to take a trip to Brighton to buy some bits for our upcoming trip to India. I put the radio on to listen to it & after the battering & their first goal I got the right hump & switched it off.
We came home & went straight in our CAFC local (didn’t have Sky back then).
Alright Mary, how much did they spank us by? The whole pub then seemed to join in telling us exactly how we had won. Never been so delighted to have missed a game 🤣🤣🤣
Its crazy to think that there are Charlton fans in their early 20s who only know the prem era as these nebulous "glory years" that boomer/older millenial fans dig up all the time for a nostalgia hit. Heres hoping TS does get us back there in the (hopefully!) near future.
I think I may have been working that weekend, as I didn't end up going to the pub to watch it with my Mum and Dad, unlike my sister and Gooner brother-in-law, who managed to arrive not long after Arsenal had scored their first, so had to put up with my Dad going on about how he'd missed their best spell for the rest of the game. (He'd had to sit on his hands in the away end at Highbury with me and Dad the year before when we'd lost 5-3, as Mum had had to give up her ticket to take my sister wedding dress shopping. He'd been doing quite well remaining inconspicuous until half time when a bloke in the row behind recognised him as a neighbour from when he'd lived in Plumstead)
So I had to wait for the highlights instead. How Arsenal didn't manage to score more I'll never know, but even knowing the result I couldn't quite believe Steve Brown heading in the equaliser, the hysterical goof from Richard Wright for the second, JJ bullying Vieira off the ball for the epic third from Claus, and Euell springing the famous Arsenal offside trap for the 4th. Still reckon Henry dived for their penalty though.
Yes. Arguably tops Bartlett's. Don't know what won goal of the season that year, but that goal mustve taken some beating. The vision, awareness and accuracy to lob right in that far top corner from that angle. Out of this world. I know he got a lot of stick for his performance that day but don't think you could really fault Wright's positioning for that one either.
I’ve said this before on other threads more than once, but in my view, Jensen’s goal is one of the most criminally underrated goals of all time. Always disregarded whenever anyone (other than charlton fans) talk about great goals. If memory serves, Jensen didn’t even get goal of the month for November.
When you look at what happened, we pressed the defence high, pressured, won the ball, got a tiny bit of space, he looked up, then executed an absolutely outrageous chip. I can’t see how any other player would have seen, gone for and executed that shot. It was filthy. Unlike Kermorgant’s beauty against Hartlepool, there can be no debate as to whether he meant it. He did. He looked up and there was nothing else he could possibly have been trying to do. It was so perfect, it glanced off the bar AND hit the post before going in.
It should be a candidate for one of the best goals of all time by ANY team, not just Charlton. But most “football fans” aren’t even aware of it. And that’s outrageous.
Just the 22 years ago now. Arsenal away then, Cray Valley Paper Mills this weekend.
Still got vivid memories of all our goals from my vantage point at the back of the Clock End. Those smug Gooner faces when they were 1 up and cruising. The same faces filing out early and us waving them off. What an incredibly happy day it was. Then the Blackstock Arms afterwards to give it the large to my Arsenal mates. They get an anniversary text reminder off me every year
A million miles away from where we’re at now Our most recent 4-2 victory was against Aston Villa U21s in the tinpot renamed trophy, that we’re now a regular part of due to our shitness and our next live Tv match is against a local pepper mill or some other condiment still don’t slag off any Charlton players in the worst footballing period in our history cos we’re 11th in league one whoopee fucking doo

Sorry for quoting myself, but it needs repeating. That goal was so brilliant and is still incredibly overlooked by most.

Whilst it was a very good goal, I think you are getting a bit carried away with it being one of the best goals of all time.

Nope. Not having that. It was sublime.
To pull that off was absolutely extraordinary. And it was no fluke, he went for it. There are goals that you could argue were better, but it’s right up there with the best of them. Technique, vision, skill and execution. All perfect.

Dennis Bergkamp for Holland v Argentina in Marseille for one.
@lordromford you have seen a lot of football, I get that, but I think bias is getting in the way here. Bergkamp is the best player I have seen live, play his goal at Newcastle, or his hat-trick at Leicester. His goals video will support my opinion. Enjoy tomorrow

Elfs, I’m not comparing Claus to Bergkamp! I’m talking about that one goal. In isolation. I know Bergkamp scored some fabulous goals, but it’s irrelevant to the point of Claus’ beauty at Highbury being under appreciated.
I admit my Charltonness makes me a bit biased, but it can’t be denied that it was a very, very VERY good goal!
Arsenal in their own arrogant and entitled way assumed they would win that day.Every player was brilliant that day ..I remember running out of the house up the street and back again after JE scored number 4.
Interesting footnote is that it was Gavin Peacock's last game for us. He came on as a sub in the second half
Wikipedia has got it wrong. It claims that Gav played in the PL for Chelsea and Newcastle. Charlton is listed as one of his EFL clubs. He actually never played for the Toon in the top flight. He was transferred to the Bridge during the close season following the promotion for family reasons. Ironically his handful of performances for the Addicks were all in the Premier League.

A good shout, a lot of people would have thought there has been only one Peacock playing for us.
Like Millwall in the snow in 1995 I missed this one as I had only been married for a few months and wife (now ex) had invited her parents round for Sunday lunch.....and seeing as it was on tv thought I would do the decent thing and stay at home. Doh !!!
My big 2 regrets (apart from the 2 divorces) are missing those 2 games. Been to Highbury/Emirates and Old Den/New Den and never seen us win at either. Only time we've done it in my lifetime I've not been there.

If Rooney or Ronaldo scored Jensen's chip...it would probably be on a skysports ad and considered one of the best goals of all time
