The week that was - Sunday 4th November 2001. Arsenal 2 Charlton 4

edited November 2007 in General Charlton
Sunday 4th November 2001. Arsenal 2 (1) (Henry 6 60(pen)) Charlton Athletic 4 (2) (Brown 35, Wright (og) 42, Jensen 49, Euell 53). Highbury. Att: 38,010

Arsenal: Wright, Lauren, Keown, Grimandi, Cole (Wiltord 68), Ljungberg, Vieira, Van Brockenhurst, Pires, Bergkamp, Henry. Unused subs: Taylor, Parlour, Luzhny, Kanu.

Charlton: Kiely, Young, Fish, Brown, Powell, Parker (Peacock 68), Kinsella, Jensen (Bartlett 81), Konchesky, Johansson (Robinson 79), Euell. Unused subs: Roberts, Fortune.

Referee: Mark Halsey (Welwyn Garden City)

Penalty awarded against Fish alleged to have tripped Henry. TV replays showed that Fish had clearly got the ball first and not the man.

Charlton's first victory at Highbury since October 1956 was awarded the performance of the week by the League Managers Association Panel.

In London derby league matches, opposition clubs visiting Arsenal had scored four or more and gone on to win the match on only eight occasions. Spurs once, Chelsea three times and Charlton four times. (how good are we?!!!).

The dubious goals committee awarded Charlton's second goal as a Richard Wright own goal despite Konchesky's free kick being on target and Wright only mistiming his punch and the ball ending up in the net.

  • along with the chelsea 4-2 and the man united 3-3 one of the highlights of our Premiership experience

unbelievable day, especially when Jensen's went in
  • great memories in the prem were very few,but this was our finest imo
  • That was a great day. Came out of Highbury buzzing with a very sore throat. Went to the Wetherspoons in Islington afterwards... probably not a good idea! Let's just say there wasnt a nice atmosphere in there. Headed off to Covent Garden and had a cracking curry -just the cure for a sore throat!
  • Great day out. think I bumped into you in covent garden medders didn't i? memory is bit of a blur! lol

    ..............

A mere detail when playing the top sides...ever heard of the Anfield penalty?
  • jensen = class end of
  • Jensen's goal was one of the proudest Premiership moments as a Charlton fan for me! Heroic!
  • [cite]Posted By: Ledge[/cite]jensen = class end of

    Agree 100% ledge
  • miracles do happen and it was a pleasure to be at this one...how we kept arsenal down to just one goal in the first 30 minutes was unbelievable and as for 'class' jensen's goal that's why they call it the beautiful game!
  • Great day out.I was sat right up against the fence and the Arse fans, the look on their faces when the fourth goal went in was an absolute picture.Ahh Memories

  • I wasn't going, my Father-in-law was taking my eldest lad, but got a call on the Friday evening from someone saying they had acouple of spare tickets, so I rung bruv and the rest they say is history. Been lucky enough to see us win at all the big grounds/clubs now except Newcastle.

This game was very unlike the Chelsea home 4-2 match because we got murdered for that first period and there was some desperate defending. I reckon we scored from our only four efforts at goal. A real smash and grab but in some ways made it even more enjoyable.

Players acted like we'd won the cup at the end when they came over. Parker was outstanding against Vieira, got him well rattled.
  • I was at uni in Swansea and with it being on the TV did not make the long trip back to London.

I wandered out of my student digs with 4 arsenal fans, 3 spurs fans and a liverpool fan. We went into the student union which was packed with more liverpool and man u fans than anything else and crap loads of students who didnt need an excuse to have a pint.

I had my CAFC shirt on (the only one at Swansea uni i'm sure) and sat down in front of the TV thinking that we could be seeing a rout, got a pint of snakebite and agreed with everyone else in my group that we would do a pint every 15 minutes and a double aftershock for every goal...what a mistake eh?

As the game got underrway, we were pinned back for ages but just seemed to score with every attack! The arsenal fans i was with couldnt believe what they were seeing and when we got the fourth was one of the best moments of being a Charlton fan...

...with about 60-70 people in the student bar, i started singing VFR in a drunken state and after one verse people started singing with me and then the whole bloody bar was revelling in laughing at Arsenal by all being temporary Charlton fans singing VFR!

I was suitably drunk by the end of the game and proceeded to go out and spend £140 on fireworks for the evening's proceedings.

    Happy days.
  • Constantly glancing across at the scoreboard watching the time tick down (the little rubbish one, not the big screen) - even at 4-1 I was convinced we'd blow it!

Mine too, but I'm pretty sure you were in the curry house with us... you, stick, pink poof...
  • Stick wasn't there that day he had the flu! Not sure about the curry house but remember us all having a drink or three in covent garden!
  • Couldnt get a ticket in our end for this one, but managed to nab one of a Gooner mate in the North Bank.Highly enjoyable though it was having a constant grin on my face ( apart from the first 20 mins) , I did have regrets not being able to celebrate properly during the game, especially when the 4th went in !.Wenger was getting tons of abuse.Hilarious.

Made up for that in a fairly empty (of Arsenal anyway) 12 Pins pub at Finsbury Park.
    Top Day.
  • Most of my best mates are gooners.

Far and away the best Charlton match I have experienced.

    It was Southampton x 1000

I seem to remember something strange about that pub... wasnt there some old granny in there or something?

what is it with you and grannies in pubs Medders?
  • Thanks H+A; great memories. As mentioned by Stone, Parker had them well rattled. Early in the game he thundered into Henry - legally. Henry didn't fancy it and started finger-wagging in a "do you know who I am?" sort of way, which seemed only to spur Parker on. And that was never a pen. Just great that for once even the desperate late cheating counted for nothing since we were - still hard to believe - so far in front!

  • Steve Brown that day epitomised what Steve Brown is all about committed tackles, last ditch blockskitchen sink time. Shame we've nobody like that now

    Danny Mills?
    Lloyd Sam?
    Jose Semedo?
    Andy Reid?
  • met a friend in a pub in the east-end watching the earlier game.but our match had kicked off by the time a cab eventually showed for us and he managed to almost drop us to the door.

we rolled in 25 minutes late.don't know what people were saying about being lucky to be in the game at all,i just saw us smash up arsenal in their manor.the whole team were great, euell was fantastic but claus' goal was sensational.if henry had scored it or if the sun hadn't affected the camera view then i think we would still be seeing it every week on tv.

you just don't get games in the lower leagues to touch these games.
  • I was unable to go due to work commitments. I turned on the TV to catch the last half hour or so and almost fell of the chair when I saw the score was 4-1. When they got their second from a penalty I started wondering if we would end up blowing it but we didn't. I bought the video of the game and play it sometimes to cheer myself up. Amazing game.
  • lol medders! I got on a train and left you heading towards the curry house with her! you have never told me what happened after that! lol
  • [cite]Posted By: Al the Addick[/cite]lol medders! I got on a train and left you heading towards the curry house with her! you have never told me what happened after that! lol

lol leave it out!!! The pub was AFTER the curry... wasnt it?
  • in that case where exactly were you heading with her?
  • Amazing game, we were slaughtered for half an hour but somehow only conceded one goal, should have been 3-0 after 5 minutes! The suddenly two Konchesky two free kicks and we are 2-1 up - Arsenal should have been out of sight but that's the beauty of football that other sports just can't match. Claus's goal was one of the best moments of being a Charlton fan for me, a sublime moment, until then I was still expecting we'd lose. Then Jason goes and sends us onto cloud nine, unbelievable after what the first 35 minutes had been like!

There was plenty of time after their penalty for them to come back into it, but they seemed dazed and we played heroically.
  • I remeber being 4-1 up and Euell scuffed the ball of a post wide and Wright pulling of a great save from JJ (?) towards the end.

They were walking out in the North Bank at half time!
  • And i remember hearing a female gooner fan on 606 describing it as "having lost to a pub team"

Really made me angry and also laugh at the same time

One of my best Charlton moments and i wasn't even there.
