Latest dig from Diawara

edited November 2007 in General Charlton
“Of course I want to play Premier League football again, I hope I will return pretty soon,” Diawara told setantasports.com.

“It took me time to adapt and to understand their football, but when I learnt it I started to have a lot of fun.

“Charlton had a good team and if we had not been disturbed by non-sporting issues, I think we could have avoided the drop. That is life. I do not regret at all this very interesting experience and I want to return.”

Don't see how that is taking a dig at us, having 3 mamagers in a season doesn't help club stability.

Perhaps it was the non-sporting issues that drove him to drink! ;o)
  • In some areas drinking is considered a sport..

    ;)
  • Well, nobody put "FACT" at the end of their post - so am guessing it must therefore just be rumour!
  • If he is having a pop he has no right to judging by his footballing ability.

Anyone that makes Tommy Mooney look world class has some explaining to do.

  • One of the papers report that a couple of Prem league clubs are looking at him (Fulham?). Hopefully we have a sell-on clause. Ditto Bougerra. Apparently we got some dosh for Marcus Bent helping Brum's promotion bid. I t will all help.

It's true that Diawara got off to something of a shaky start but ended up a damn fine player (IMHO) and certainly better than anyone we have at center back at present.
There seems to be a few folk around who never saw the massive improvement in him....mostly I think because they'd already made up their minds about him.
I'd like him with us now I have to say....wishful thinking of course!
Mean't to say...... I didn't see those comments as him having an OTT dig at us.
  • I'd love to see him playing again over here. He was class when he was with us, what would he be like with a skillfull passing team?
  • Let's face it Charlton fans are great judges of a quality centre half.

Having voted the brilliant Paddy MaCartney as Runner Up and the Beckenbaueresque Mark Hudson Third in the Player of the Year awards.

    Shane Westley for England.

    Bring back Dowman.
  • Diawara? Yes, he was so good that he could not even get in the side past El Kak and Herman towards the end of the relegation season from the Prem. Take a look at his performance at home against Sheffield United for the most nervy and inept display from a centre-half since records began.

Total crap and a big reason why Dowie got the push.
  • If Bordeaux qualify for Chumpions league, don't we get extras money from them for him?

Just had a look, the OS at the time said €1.2m (euros that is) in clauses.

So we could still be due money for appearances, caps or European qualification, or we might have already had most of it.
  • Hope the "extras" deal was for the exchange rate now rather than when he went!

    yep

Dunno maybe the drink driving laws are different in France.

for all his pace and heading ability -when there wasn't an attacker near him - he was a terrible defender. Wycombe in the league cup ffs. Quite a few other games when he was so so out of position. He wasn't a raw kid but a 26 year old.

  • but he did in my opinion seem to be more assured than Hudson...
  • (Note to self - no spell chucker on Ie at work)

Just checked and Bordeaux guaranteed place in Chumpions League, so more money due then.
  • He wouldn't have played regularly for Bordeaux for two seasons if he was that bad. Not like some of Dowie's other signings like Simon Walton who haven't gone on to do much since.
  • Simon Walton = Younger Joey Barton
  • Was it against Wigan that Diarra ducked two high balls lumped forward because he didn't fancy it?

In both cases their forward latched on to them and scored.

From then on he wanted shooting. He was crap and couldn't be arsed to put in a performance.

Good bloody riddance - pay us back your wages you useless shite.

He might well be fine in the French League but the English game - especially outside the top four - is a totally different game to that on the continent and needs a different style of defender. Defenders in the Prem need to do a lot of heading and a lot of defending of long balls whereas the French game is much more controlled.

The pace of the English game was too much for Diawara and he could not handle the intensity or the physicality.
  • That's fair enough, just making the point that ability wise he's not this terrible defender he is sometimes made out to be.

Rommedahl was another that didn't suit English football. It's the problem with signing players from abroad. Look at Yassin with the rumours of him being a bit of a loner.

Very true, Diawara is obviously no mug or he would not be playing at the level he is at in France which is a decent league, not as good as England, Italy or Spain but not too bad. I remember Laurent Blanc - and he was real class - also having big problems when he played at Man Utd adapting to the English game.
  • There must be plenty of cheap players out there in the second and third tiers of leagues like France, Holland, Spain etc. Us signing players like Yassin and Racon shows that there are some, and the Spanish players Swansea have signed, but I guess it doesn't happen that often when it comes to these players outside the top flight because of the problems with them adapting to the country, the language, the football and the club especially the players.

Forlan is another one, couldn't score for Man Utd, but in Spain he's a pretty good goalscorer.
