Memories of Wolves away

edited October 2007 in General Charlton
Been there a few times. Remember Molineux as the first time i'd ever heard the Liquidator tune and thought it was ace. Never a friendly place to go to though.

Remember getting a coach up there midweek, just after Christmas. We had a right decent turnout that night and Phil Chapple scored an own goal that we just couldn't work out what had happened. Remember gettign off the coach and walking through the Broadway in the middle of the night, and an electrical shop had a tv in the window showing the football highlights. So for about 15 minutes there were 20 of us outside this shop window watching the highlights, and saw just what a comedy own goal it was !

Me,fat gary and b getting run by about twenty of them, never forget me and swanny running across a bowling green kickin the bowls everywhere while the old foegies looked on in disbelief as the wolves boys followed.
  • Watching all their celebrations about being promoted after 19 years and then about 20 minutes later we were 4-0 up and singing "was it really worth the wait?" And can't remember the year but I was near the home fans and there was a coloured chap waving an ira flag at us just after a London bombing and the Charlton fans who complained got thrown out and not him!!

Oakster drove a car load of us up that day. Got propositioned and followed after the game. The walk back to the car turned into a quick march and then a sprint. Made the car, about to shoot off and someone goes 'Where's Riscardo ?'. So we phone him up and he's managed to find some caribbean takeaway and was ordering a mango milkshake.......

It wasn't quite as bad as that. But I never knew you had been propositioned, I would have offer to pay for the first date!!!!

The moment just seemed right for a mango milkshake, you dont see many in the Black Country ...
  • last time up there (the 4-0 I think) I was walking away from the ground chatting nicely to a Wolves couple when my Dad tugged me back saying Mrs Large was in trouble. I turned to see that far from being in trouble she had a Wolves fan pinned up against a wall and was giving him what for. Apparantely he'd thrown ketchup at me from his burger although I didn't realise. The missus ripped his shirt as well. Anyway, further on he had the temerity to report my missus to a couple of coppers and wanted her arrested. As the missus approached the bill and basically said 'go on make my day but you'll have to arrest him as well' he basically decided to leg it. Happy dayz !!

Large when he legged it did you manage to "ketchup" with him?
  • Mr Weegie and I originally moved up here to Glasgow from London in 1991. We were bringing the final car load of stuff ourselves - plants, photos, valuables etc. We then realised the mighty CAFC were away to Wolves on the weekend we were travelling - and of course, it is en route. So we timed our trip accordingly and parked our car stuffed with many of our precious worldly goods in the car park right next to the ground, and just hoped it would still be in one piece when we came out afterwards. Amazingly it was - must have been a strange sight, though!

Can barely remember the game - think it was a draw?
  • First time I went was when Steve Brown missed a penalty early doors, we had quite a few there if memory serves, err probably more than we'll have there on Saturday.

The 3-1 midweek win was a goodun when we went up.

The 4-0 was arguably the best away performance I have seen.

Nearly came into a bit of bother at a midweek cup replay in the 90's.

Not a nice place and one of my least favourite away days. Not going Saturday for that reason.
  • I remember a night game in the early nineties, before the arrival of Jack Hayward. There was the big stand, and then about a mile away there was the pitch. Then there were two condemned stands and a large terrace at one end, it was horrible. And to make matters worse we lost 3-0 and it rained.

Is it Bacon Mozarella & Tomato?
  • Nope, it's not what you'll expect, it's more to do with Subways history as a company
  • .........lunch time over and back to the original post.

This was my brother's favourite ground...don't know why but he loved going to Wolves, especially to the shopping place for fish and chipsb before the match. There he would always make conversation and banter with the locals...He even bought a Wolves hat on his last visit. although his love affair with this strange football team was severely dented after we beat them in our promotion year...lets just say the natives were restless.

For me, the first visit was in the early 80 (or late 70's - Im no good with years) when we played Wolves in the FA cup - Richards hatrick. Great day out and there were Charlton everywhere that day..again got a bit naughty when leaving the ground but that was the norm in those days. And have been to Wolves many times since with my bro and recount some of the above memories and many defeats.

Unfortunately, I am unable to get to there this saturday, which is a shame as my late brother would loved to be looking down, cheering the Addicks on... with a Wolves hat on.

    RIP Terry
  • I was at both the 3-0 defeats. Both midweek I think and one was in the cup. But I redeemed myself by being at the 4-0 win. It a sublime first half display. I remember Carlton Cole came on for us and he got roundly cheered by us and booed by them as he was on loan with them the season before. Think Parker was sent off too.

Was most enjoyable piss-taking 45 mins, I thought we had finally made it and were the big Prem boys and they were the little upstarts.

The subways are very dodgy there though too.
  • Hopefully Addicks will sing a song for your bro Solid. RIP.
  • anyone else in that "away" boozer the day it got cs gassed amongst other things.

I fecking hate Wolves nearly as much as the scousers - another bunch of snidey little back stabbers -

same as afka been up on train and car and had aggro every bloody time.
