  • Have still got the 'Finche's' video of that great game.
  • [cite]Posted By: Killarahales[/cite]I was there, in the Arfur Wait.
Talk about a Scotland cap for Melrose on Sports Report on the way home, but it never happened, did it?
I must have been standing near Chicago Addick, also saw Jimmy wink at the crowd when he was pretending to be injured later that year.
Lennie made some inspired signings during that period, Garth Crooks a very similar one.

He never did the Scotland cap. He played 399 league matches scoring 99 league goals and he was my first footballing hero! I wasn't at the above game but remember the play-off game at home to Leeds where he scored to give us a priceless 1-0 lead...

  • A great game - I would always liked Jim Melrose - a pity he joined us so late in his career.
  • [cite]Posted By: Badger[/cite]We Did beat Leicester the following week 2-0 but then lost 6 on the bounce and eventually drew 1-1 with newcastle.
    Bob Bolder springs to mind?

According to Soccerbase we beat Leicester 2-0 the following week before defeating West Ham 3-1 at Upton Park and QPR 1-0 at Selhurst then came the losing streak (0-2 v Arsenal, 1-4 v Watford, 1-2 v Man City, 0-2 v Arsenal (League Cup), 1-3 v Saints, 0-1 v Luton) then the 1-1 draw with Newcastle in early December....
  • I'm sure we has this convo before but does anyone know of anywhere I can buy the 1986-87 and 1987-88 season reviews on either VHS or DVD? The earliest one I've got is 1988-89 when they started a whole range of videos where every top flight club got a review and there was Race for the Championship, Goals of the Season and Saves and of the Season...any help would be gratefully received.
  • this was my first ever match, i dont actually remember anything of the game itself.

we stood in the Homesdale road end on the lefthand side halfway up..
  • Every single time Charlton come out of the tunnel against a team in blue, I think of this game. Especially if it's sunny. I think Dad's in the process of trying to get this game from VHS and onto DVD, which means I can put the goals on YouTube...
  • Old kit thread reminded me of this game.

Aw shucks Jimmy, it was only a photo, but thanks anyway. ;-)

  • My wife's first ever Charlton game. She's been a fair weather fan ever since.
  • Was at the back of The Holmesdale for this one.

Great to beat a team of Everton's quality and without a hint of controversy....it was a proper fair result.

Think Melrose's goals were a run through and chip over the keeper, a sliding in side-foot and (both at The Holmesdale End) and turn & shot from john Pearson's knock down at the Sainsbury's End.
  • Remember this game like it was yesterday. Was sitting in the members stand with my brothers and have memories of Melrose running towards where I was sitting after completing his hat trick. Jimmy Melrose was my first Charlton hero and was gutted when we sold him to Leeds the following season. Can still remember listening to the radio interview with jimmy on sports report on the way home.
  • Jimmy 85...excellent way to start the day...thanks for posting that!

Top flight football was a different game then wasn't it?! Balls over the top...strikers running on to them. And the crowd on the video sounded like 40,000 when those goals went in! Great day....one of the best.
