[cite]Posted By: oohaahmortimer[/cite]i bought the video to that game from west ham ...f**ing brilliant , think alvin martin was a co-commentator they were gutted!!!
I've got that vidao too - it's a classic!
In the build to the game
Alvin Martin: Charlton have got a reputation for sitting back and trying to soak up pressure
West Ham kick off, Charlton score after 9 seconds
Commentator: Well, what happened there then Alvin?
Alvin Martin: *STUNNED SILENCE*
I might dig it out tonight and give it another airing. Was my first away game - and what a one to pick!
Melrose was a kind of Paul Dickov of his era in my eyes. A right bloody pest if you were a defender and a player all the oppo fans hated but would have on their side any day. We managed some results against some top sides in those days. Not sure I really appreciated how good some of our lot were at the time. Reid and Humphrey were one of the best full-back pairings in the country at the time.
definitely agree with the paul dickov comment on melrose made up for limited ability with plenty of hard work aggression and guts.....
as for the full backs different gravy...johnny h was deserving of a full england cap but never got one, was he kept out by gary steven(s) the blonde fellow who played for everton and went on to rangers

He was kept out the England team because he played for Charlton not because Gary Stevens was a better player. Had he been at a bigger name club he'd have had a few caps.
Having just moved to Cornwall back then, it was the first game that I'd ever seen Charlton play in the top flight.
I'm sure the other 'Lifer' vets on here from the 60's & 70's would agree, that none of us could ever have imagined we'd see Charlton play in the top flight.
So it was a game of huge significance and pride for me.
What I can't recall seeing mentioned, is the Everton side that we beat that day finished League Champions!
After all those years of seeing us lose to the likes of Millwall, Aldershot and Halifax Town, Charlton BEAT the League Champions........!!!!!
That was the only home game I missed that season. I was at Barry Island in Wales for a soul weekender and saw The Fatback Band.
Had only been diagnosed diabetic a few months previously and still thought I could drink solidly for 4 days and nights and get away with it! The following week that I spent sick in bed soon taught me otherwise!
That has to be one of my all time favourite seasons - so much happened. That Everton game was indeed one of our best 80's games and definitely in my mind the best game at Sellout. I loved Jim Melrose, from when he scored on his debut at The Den. Later in the season he dived acrobatically in front of us in the Arthur Wait and as the ref gave the foul he turned to the crowd and winked. Proper character, he was scouting at Leicester but not sure now.
A lot happened that season. The win at Upton Park and that early goal - we were so crushed in that away end that day, the win at Old Trafford, the play-off's, 5-0 Boxing Day win over Citeh, a decent run in the Cup and the Full Members Cup Final, although I try not to remember the Wembley game itself.
I remember a lot of that season - simply I'd been a Charlton fan for a few years and always thought it would be great to be in Division One playing and beating Man U etc...and then suddenly it happened and for the first time in nearly 30 years to boot.
My plan was to get to as many games home and away as possible, because realistically it looked like we were going to be one season wonders - we had a thin squad with little depth to it, no money, were playing our home games at Selhurst and I think we needed an average 11k gate to break even. Look at the attendance for this game - 10,500 and for the current league champions, only Arsenal, Liverpool and Spurs attracted good gates and there wasn't in this season the prospect of a Palace-Charlton derby match to boost the coffers.
All in all an eventual year and it ended fittingly with the play-off final win at Leeds and in almost the last minute of the match. I always thought we deserved to stay up after everything we'd been through that year.
if I remember, this Everton match was part of 6 successive wins that earned Lennie 'Manager of the Month'.
We probably didn't win for a month after that.
I could never understand why my father took me the 122 to get to Selhurst when the 75 was nearer to that souless place. which meant walking up to the Palace parade.

Worse than that, we didn't score a goal for the next month - even the goal in the Newcastle 1-1 was an OG coutesy of Glenn Roeder.
I was in the Arfur State. Brilliant game and a fantastic performance by JM. I really thought that Lennie had done a serious piece of business when he signed him. He looked like the striker we had been missing since Killer packed up. It was such a shame that he couldn't settle and was off at the end of the season.
Great game and a semi reasonable crowd that day (For Shithurst). I too was in the Sainsbury end as usual.....I think 90% of our crowd must have been in that end according to all those who mention it.....always seemed a bit empty to me...well then the ground did too!
I was in Sainsbury end too for this game as a junior red.
Used to stand by the goalies right hand post.
Our family friends used to stand nearby with their little banner over the railings saying VALLEY IS HOME
One of my favourite games, but for every game like this we also had a Walsall in the cup to balance it out.
Used to get the coach from Dartford library in those days before graduating to the trains.
can't believe 22 years on and that kit would not be out of place now and would look a damn sight better than chavtastic shirt we wear now.... come on zabby mob sort that shirt out ffs
This was the first of the 'Big Five' (Liverpool, Everton, Man Utd, Aresanl, Spurs) to play us at Sellhurst that season. This was a great game with Melrose immense. The family bought the video of the game from Finches due to how big a win it was for us.
I was there, in the Arfur Wait. Talk about a Scotland cap for Melrose on Sports Report on the way home, but it never happened, did it? I must have been standing near Chicago Addick, also saw Jimmy wink at the crowd when he was pretending to be injured later that year. Lennie made some inspired signings during that period, Garth Crooks a very similar one.

Bob Bolder springs to mind?

Thanks for all the compliments and praise.
My hat-trick was truly special and I was just class.
Oooooh, jimmy jimmy
jimmy, jimmy, jimmy, jimmy meeelrose!
What a game. Think it was the one that sealed my love for CAFC!!
