Yep, I was in the Members Stand level with the six-yard box and could not believe how Leaburn missed from there!!! Actually a top finish from fat boy Jones for his goal that day, chipped it in from a tight angle after Mimms had blundered yet again.

That period was a very exciting one with our "Black Magic" front four of Bennett - Williams - Leaburn - Mortimer.

    the four tops......

jones goal was blinding... Mimms confidence was in the dirt....
  • The press at the time had nicknamed him 'Booby' Mimms. He was flapping all game.Great curler from super sub Jonah.Good game.Dont know who the unused sub Evans is though.

It might have been..but I think that might have been a different match, in that match I remember Thorsvedt (sp?) being in goal for Spurs that day and a different scorer for Spurs' second goal - Tony Galvin rather than Allen. Perhaps Home&Away could sort this out?

And I'm racking my brain as to who Evans was...I vaguely recall the name and that's all.

Maybe the game AKFA highlighted in this thread?

I can't find any other reference to Evans in the bible (he was also an unused sub at home to Forest six weeks later and away at Boro just after that. Oh and a league
cup tie at home to Northampton). He's not in the team photo and didn't even make a sub appearence. I may have to visit my loft if no one can come up with the answer!

A youth player that never broke through or a loan player?

No it wasn't that game - that was a 2-0 win to Spurs. In the match in question the score was definitely 2-1 to Charlton, Leaburn missed a sitter, the ball was hacked clear and moments later was in the back of our net at the Holmesdale End following an admittedly good goal from I thought Galvin rather than Allen.

think this guy's name was peter evans he was a youth team player , i played against him in a scoool match a few years earlier and he shouted some abuse at me when i saved his free kick
  • Well he would do - you were a winger...

  • The 2-0 defeat was 89/90.

Gazza's midfield performance was the best I have ever seen to this day. He absolutely ran the game.

Well .... its caused a lot of controversy.... I think there is two games here your right.... jonas goal was great and Im pretty sure mims almost gave away a corner really early on showing that his copnfidence had gone down the toilet.... I reckon the torstved game was adifferent one when leaburn hit the post....

    those were the days eh....

Im still eternally grateful for city addicks for meeting Lennie and John 20 years later having once met them in teh dressing room.... still very disappointed I didnt get to meet morts again... but thats what you get and I have to say strolling to work with my shades on today was lovely , so theres the flip side...
  • The 2-0 game when Galvin scored was in 86/87, the season we beat Leeds in the Play Offs. That game was in December or early January and Spurs finished 2nd or 3rd that season with Clive Allen scoring 49 goals so they were red hot. Galvin's goal was late on when they were 1-0 up and he ran from halfway and cut in to fire home from 25 yards out.

The four home games against Spurs at Selhurst finished....0-2, 1-1, 2-2 and 1-2.
  • The team that Lennie built.

    Real men, real TEAM.

He was part of our victorious Soccer Sixes squad
  • I remember being so pissed before this game that I fell out of the train into a heap on the Platform & did not even try to get up for at least a minute.

    Great game.

Two-one up and Leaburn side foots against the post at the Sainsburys end with an empty goal beckoning from six yards out - they go straight up the other end and equalise!

He got some dog's abuse from where I was sitting in the Junior Reds section of the main stand.

But all's well that ends well and we loved him by the end of his career
  • I was a ball boy at this game.
  • This was one was of a sequence of home 2-2 draws and was really frustrating. The performance was excellent but during that period we just couldn't hang to to leads. I'm sure Leaburn's post hit was fom a diving header from very close range at The Holmesdale End in the first half when we were winning 1-0 (through Peake's shot deflected over Mimms). Both of Spurs goals were 2nd half at Holmesdale End and Jones chipped in over a few back tracking defenders at The Sainsbury End. Did Leaburn miss someting similar v Spurs the following year when we went 1-0 up early in 2nd half only to lose 3-1? (I reckon that was the Gascoigne game referred to earlier in this thread..he scored in 88th min).
  • leaburns effort was definitely a little side footer from about 4 yards out, and not a diving header.
reckon there was more than 14,000 there though.

Why did Fenwick take the penaly when you look at some of the other players on that team (waddle excepted ha ha)
Which game did Mitchell Thomas score an overhead kick against us ?

  • As I recall Carlo's miss was a richochet off his knee from the corner of the six yard box after Thorsvdet had flapped at and missed a routine cross. I presume he was slightly unsighted and certainly unprepared, but even so with an open goal he should still have scored. What happened next with Galvin's goal rubbed salt in. Poor Carlo he was playing what was then L1 football and was painfully out of his depth and deserved the break that a tap-in goal would have given him.
  • OneLung - The Mitchell Thomas goal was inthe 3-1 defeat. Williams put us 1-0 up after 50 and Thomas equalised on 74, Lineker 83 and Gascoigne 88.

Come to think of it, you're right about the Leaburn side footer rather than header in the 2-2.

I went with my cousins to this game and was the first time I had known anyone to buy tickets of a tout.

So maybe there was afew more in there
  • 25 years and counting!
  • Memorable for Jonah's goal. Leaburns miss was unreal.
  • I was a ball boy at this game.

    I was too!
  • This is one game that always stands out in my memory.
Remember Leaburn missing a near open goal to make in 3-1 and moments later it was 2-2.
  • Great finish by Andy Jones in this game, it was right in front of us in the Junior Reds section in the far end of the Members Stand.
  • I was behind the goal at the Sainsbury's end and although I now can't remember it (being 25 yrs ago) I know Leaburn did hit the post from a few yards out when it was easier to score because that miss started years of dislike for the player which has only recently abated after seeing the likes of David Mooney, Leon Clarke & lately Simon Church all do the same.......
