see what you're saying Dan, tho, england losing last night wouldn't have put me in as much a bad mood as i will be on saturday if we lose.
long term, yes, charlton can afford to drop points and england can't afford to lose games, but with england, I just assume we'll get there in the end and make it difficult for ourselves. charlton can't rely on sheer luck to get us through, they make it difficult, but no guarantee they'll get there, and I want them to a bit more. if it was charlton to be promoted or england to qualify. i'd still do charlton. i'd be disappointed that england couldn't qualify, but wouldn' tlet it spoil my day. i'd sulk the whole of the summer if charlton don't get promoted.

True - I suppose its a case of missing out on watching 4/5 England games during the summer or watching us in the Fizzy pop for another year.

I think I'd actually be more pissed off if England didn't qualify but I don't really know why.....
This is a rubbish thread in my opinion, I regard myself as a English supporter not a fan, but Charlton will always come first over England as they are my one true love, England is my mistress on the side.
Charlton all the way, England some way down in my thoughts.
Having been started on in a pub last night by some pr*ck who only ever comes in for England games, it reminded me of why I'm a bit ambivalent about the national side.
That said, I'd like them to do well, get over themselves a bit, and I thought they were terrific last night.
of course, when Wales do well, I claim to be Welsh, and I blame the anti-Taff Anglo-centric media for its lack of coverage of the superb 5-2 win... (etc) :-)
I'm English but my sense of nationality is not wrapped up with it's football team. in fact that is a fairly small part of it. Some peope take no interest in football or the England football team but that does not make them less English.
I like to see the England football team win but I don't have much emotional investment in that team. More than in the England hockey team but less than Charlton.
I have a huge emotional investment in Charlton so it's victories and defeats are more, much more significant to me.
Strange how this thread got dragged into some sort of anti-English accusation.
I'm English and proud to be English. (it seems anyone can be British these days!)
I'm a Charlton supporter of too many years to mention - but I will admit to seeing the likes of Sammy Lawrie playing! - and I'm proud of that too!
The original question was simple - a Charlton win or an England win - not do you hate England or some such.
My response was reflex - Charlton because that is my immediate affinity.
But given the option my answer would have been Charlton win - England win. As that wasn't there I chose my personal favourite but it doesn't mean I don't want England to succeed - just that Charlton's success is more important and more personal to me!

They weren't but someone predictably made the leap not bothered about England = anti-English.
Personally being English is something you are born with - a bit like your family. On ther hand Charlton is more of a choice - a bit like the friends you make.

Ok if not anti -English then anti-England (as in football team). Although suggesting someone is ashamed of being English if they don't support the England team gets pretty close!
But my point was the presumption being asserted that because you prefer Charlton to the National team means you don't support the National team or are ashamed of being English and I'm sure that isn't the case for most people. It's just a matter of priorities and for me CAFC comes first!
I think someone raised an interesting point when they said that it shouldn't be possible to be proud of something when you've had no influence over it.
Other than that I think this thread is pretty stupid.
