I'm patriotic and always want my country to do well, but over the years I have become less and less bothered about the England football team - whereas my love for Charlton remains as strong as ever.
Given the millions those international players earn I just don't get upset anymore when England do badly.
I'll second that. I do really want England to win but I can't help but dislike some of the players in the team. If Defoe plays for example I feel sickened by it.
I really can not see how any Charlton fan would prefer a World Cup win to an FA Cup win. I'd go mental if England won the World Cup. But if Charlton won the FA Cup I think I'd cry for days with happiness. I've dreamt of that since I was a boy. If my dreams are right then we only have another 10 years to wait by the way.

charlton all the way ... i remember THE play off final win in 1998 and a short while later england losing to the argies on penalties in france 98 and i thought so what, the penalty shoot out that REALLY mattered we won ...FACT... england to win the world cup or charlton to be in the premiership, it's charlton all the way
If you are ashamed of being English it's up to you mate. I am happy to be English (proud is the wrong word - how can you be proud of something you have no influence over...) and if the world sits up and takes notice of our sportsmen it makes me very happy.
Much as I love Charlton, after 7 years in the Premiership I would still get people asking me which division we were in.
Today we should be happy that our national team has a good chance of qualifying for a major tournament, and has played well in the process. Some of you on here actually seem to resent that... unbelieveable. You read too many tabloids and end up wanting England to fail because it is easier to criticise than praise.
I was giving an alternative opinion thats all. I love being English and would never contemplate supporting another international team but in the end my affiliation is with Charlton where i spend more time, money and emotions on than England Football Team.
There's a difference between being proud to be English and then supporting the bloody football team.
Do you think that those who don't like football are ashamed to be English if they have no care for the football team?
No you wern't WSS, you were saying the same thing as 90% of the others on this thread, Gump, me and Dan were giving the alternative opinion.
If you feel forced to support England, and look upon it as something that has been arranged for you then it comes across that you don't want to do it, ergo there is some shame in it.
I think that anyone who has no care for the football team is weird. And even if they don't like football, they should want the team to do well, I detest fishing, but if an England team is competing in the world carp fishing championships, I want them to do well.
Also, that choice thing, that's what thousands of armchair Liverpool, Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal fans say, and it works against clubs like ours most of the time...
Nobody on this thread has said that they don't want to see the football team to do well!!!
Some have just said that they would want Charlton to succeed over and above England! My statement was playing Devil's Advocate on "Charlton by choice, English by the grace of God" comment thats all.
if charlton were playing on the same day as england, I'd watch Charlton.
I want England to do well, but I don't have to watch the game. With Charlton, i want to watch as many games as I can afford to watch.
I agree with WSS, we do essentially choose the team we support, whether by location or whatever, thats hard for Charlton as we don't have much of a pull for fans except for in the south east. we don't choose to be english, we just support them as thats what we are. I don't like a lot of the english players or the manger, but i still want them to win, if the choice was england world cup, charlton fa cup, i'd revel in charlton winning much more.
I was at Italia 90 getting spat at by Italians while watching England beat Cameroon in the World Cup quarterfinal.
Terrific match, goal up and coasting, suddenly losing 2-1 down and a equalising with a last minute penalty, then the winner in extra time. Just like supporting Charlton.
The atmosphere was electric, I sung my heart out and was so proud of the team.
But compared to the roller coaster ride of lows, lows, highs and lows of supporting Charlton and the cameraderie of so many Addicks over so many years, the pride of seeing Lennie's Charlton in the top flight beyond my wildest dreams and Wembley TWICE - well, there is no contest.
We're all generally England supporters but being an Addick is special in my heart.
Was at that game too Oggy and then went on to Germany semi in Turin. thought the Iti's were ok in Naples with us, different story in Turin obviously.
I think the CAFC v England thing is always going to skew towards CAFC with most as it is a relationship that most people have with the club on an almost weekly basis for most of the year. England games (well the ones worth bothering with, never watch friendlies) come round a couple of times a year and then any tournament finals for a few weeks.
"If England win the World Cup or Euro Championships, I don't want to see any of you two-faced imbeciles celebrating."
So because people have stated that they prefer a Charlton win over an England win that means they only have a right to celebrate the former? I can appreciate your passion but not the logic here.
he worked his socks off, they were unlucky, hunt shouldn't have been sent off. (scandalous decision) Ireland had 2 decent chances where they should have scored. it wasn't going to happen. not looking good at all for them. reid looked shattered at the end. they pass everything to him and he worked everything going forward, but with 10 men (9 at a time as dunne went off with a cut face) he had too much to do and they were struggling.
baros is a 'orrible oik.
Saw the last 20 mins of scotland too when the ireland game finished. well done them, the french looked gutted, how they manage to keep them out with all that attacking, superb!
I could see the england game in a reflection in a big mirror so saw the goals as well.
My feelings are that I was born and Englishman and have England in my blood. I chose Charlton (or did it choose me?) and have Charlton in my heart.
There's nothing wrong with wanting success for either my club side, or my national side, as I feel passionately about both.
What a few on here seem to be missing is what the original questions was..... Charlton to win Sat or England last night. Nothing about whether CAFC comes before England or the other way around.
My answer was, I hope, logical / pragmatic. If Charlton lose on Sat we can still get promoted, if England had lost we'd been have been 6 points behind Croatia and 3 behind Russia, with a visit to Moscow to come......

CAFC can lose on Sat and still get promoted. If England lose then we're f**ked!
Leaving work at the minute so I will have 6 hours drinking before Wembley so probably wont care about England anyway :)

Also England to win the world cup over Charlton winning the FA cup, but a close call...
I'm mental me...
How do you work that out? Russia aren't in The Championship. Can't see how it would affect us at all.
I'll second that. I do really want England to win but I can't help but dislike some of the players in the team. If Defoe plays for example I feel sickened by it.

That is so true Jimmy
It's like having an arranged marriage or actually choosing to spend the rest of your life with someone you really love.
If you are ashamed of being English it's up to you mate. I am happy to be English (proud is the wrong word - how can you be proud of something you have no influence over...) and if the world sits up and takes notice of our sportsmen it makes me very happy.

It wasnt a choice about love one, hate the other, it was a choice about what people would prefer to see.
If you feel forced to support England, and look upon it as something that has been arranged for you then it comes across that you don't want to do it, ergo there is some shame in it.
