I wrote with someone a while back who claimed that all stories could be boiled down to one thing - a quest.
there are several versions of the 'seven stories/plots' around the internet, there are also others that have varying numbers all the way up to 36. In my view as long as you can empathise with the main character/s you will follow them wherever they go.

The heroes Journey which Walt Disney is supposed to have insisted all Disney films followed where the hero has a quest which he rejects before accepting, finding a guide and then over coming a challenge. Can't remember the rest.
