quickly ... Charlton fans were brilliant, loved singing No.1 in South London after we scored, Todorov is class but I think Pards wnet 451 for an hour to keep things tighter, Racon looked real quality, Semedo was poor and gave the ball away a lot, two top drawer saves by Weaver who had his name chanted at the end, lots of "Reeeidy" chants during the game - Reid was REALLY chuffed at the end! Mills was shaky first half but good 2nd and it was great to see his last ditch headers and Fortune and McCarthy did well too, Iwelumo is a decent player at this level. There was trouble at the Market Porter (London Bridge) with Millwall fans showering the place with bottles. No one hurt, police very quick on the scene, but pub shut down then.
salad that must have been just after i left... thats the one were the mob of charlton were right? next to the market.. down the road from the globe? what happened?
I've just got back and I agree that Weaver gave an excellent performance - the save right at the death which was also excellent. I thought McCarthy was impressive and certainly not a carthorse. Fortune played well, Danny Mills got better as the game went on and made some towering clearences and crunching challenges. Powell also looked ok, although he didn't have anyone with pace to mark.
As for the others:
Zz - his usual excellent high energy play including some crucial defensive challenges. I am so pleased we got him back
Semedo - clearly a technically good player. He still makes the odd wrong decision but a decent game
Ambrose - standard Ambrose stuff. Some decent play but also some dross
Thomas - a couple of surging runs but too often missing
Reid - found difficulty shaking off his markers but made some telling passes
Iwelumo - good target play, perhaps should have scored in the second half, worked his socks off.
Toddy - just oozes class to me. His link up play was excellent and of course the goal
Racon - he just looks really classy. Comfortable on the ball and strong in the tackle
McLeod - very little time on pitch. Should have scored a one on one with the keeper seconds before the end
My MoM was McCarthy because given the difficult debut game he had and the stick he has taken from some quarters, he put in a combatative sure-footed performance, helped by Danny Mills who was my runner up.
All in all it was a good performance against a workmanlike Palarse side. Pards tactical subsitutes were all effective. It was great to hear/be part of a Charlton away support which was brilliantly vocal. Jordan, Jordan whats the score? Jordan, whats the score?
I have to agree McCarthy was outstanding today. Hopefully finally justifying Pardew's decision to purchase. Loved Racon - classy player and tough too Saw Toddy actually run for the first time. Danny Mills looks a great signing, great defensively but not match sharp Weaver made the difference between winning and losing for me
[cite]Posted By: The Boat[/cite]salad that must have been just after i left... thats the one were the mob of charlton were right? next to the market.. down the road from the globe? what happened?
Basically a bunch of Millwall walked down the road, a few glasses got thrown, a group of lads charged them, lots more glasses thrown, a big fella came into the pub 'who heres f****** charlton?' the he looked like he didnt like that answer, so quickly left.
a lot of nothing really, police arrived within minutes.
police were very naive in the first place to just stand back and let so many charlton mob up in a boozer in london bridge when millwall were at home.. what did they expect to happen after we had just won our biggest derby and had been drinking all day
police were naive all day to be honest, they had unbelievable numbers and yet managed some shoddy organisation
they should've kept us in the weatherspoons at norwood junction, instead they split, some stayed, some got out, god knows what they were attempting and then they didn't keep us in at the end, just tried spotting for the escort, which was a joke and just lead to an avoidable standoff for a while outside the ground.
they took the escort to the trains, dumped them at london bridge and watched charlton gather there, with millwall all over the place their tactics were a joke... god only knows how much that lot cost when half the number with functioning brains could've done better
thought it was a scappy game without too much quality but what there was we had. Palace are so, so, so set up to defend. 8 men in two rows of 4 as soon as we attacked and we rarely worked out how to beat it.
2nd half we started to get on top. ZZ was getting forward and Racon gave us much more than Samedo who lost the ball too often.
Weaver three good stops. Will be vital if we are to challenge
Powell was class and only got beaten for speed by Iffil near the end, Mills got better as the game went on. Few misplaced passes 1st half but was strong and went in with his head/body whenever it was needed. Great to see his rapport with the crowd. McCarthy and Fortune attacked every ball and Paddy got what looked like a sly dig in on Stowcroft after the palace man caught him late.
Samedo didn't look like a midfielder. Thomas: Not sure if it was him or the service or good Palace defending as they nearly always doubled up on him but didn't hurt them in the way you'd want them to. ZZ drove forward more 2nd half and caused them problems. Ried tried to make us play but was most impressed by how he tracked back and cover Chrissy.
Iwelumo: Missed a good chance but worked his balls off, won the ball in the air, set up the goal. All the things people told me Leaburn was but wasn't ; - )
Todorov is class. The ball sticks to him and he can see the simple but incisive past. Great goal but must be so frustrating for Palace fans to lose to a goal like that. ha ha.
McLeod. Got to finish those off. Would have been third if he put that away.
And to think that we've still got Varney, Thatcher, Yassin, Holland, Bougherra, Sodje and Gibbs to come back into what is already a very strong team.
As for the fans. Great noise. Sitting in the Main stand among the Palace it was nearly all Charlton I could hear. Couldn't make out the most the Palace chants. They started the game with some noise and then upped it after it kicked off in the Arthur Waite. Otherwise could hear onanistic and homophobic songs about Mr Jordan quite clearly from where I was sitting 10 yards behind him.
Was very hard not to join in especially the "number one in South London" when the game was over.
Was well looked after in the vice presidents lounge and no trouble or malice. Wasn't in the board room so don't know if anything happened in there.
Seats in my part of the DB had the smallest leg room ever. Luckily I was in an aisle so couldsit sideways. Was able to stretch the legs when Toddy scored and that was the reason me and my brother stood up celebrating after everyone else sat down. Was some way behind the "proper" directors (Murray, White, Hatter, etc) down the front and I don't think they went up but may be wrong. Spoke to Richard just after game and he had a big big grin on his face. Sure he'll be made up about the dedication from Andy Ried and the players.
Jordan stood through the game a few yards behind the Charlton directors but nothing untoward seem to happen. Jordan took his sunglasses off when we scored and was moaning to his friend who was standing with him but I guess no more than I would have been if they had scored.
Let's hope that this is the start of a great run just as the win over Palace on boxing day was in 99.
Missed the first 10 minutes due to trouble on the train in front of mine. I arrived to a loud chorus of VFR and somehow didn't have to ask if it was still 0-0. Our fans were in fine voice although we are not all as angelic as some comments would have you believe.
Palace provided Weaver with more tests than their own keeper got and he passed with flying colours. His dealings with a short range near post blaster and two stretching dives were top drawer. Our man of the match for me as if they had gone in we may have had only Todorov's tasty loop over the keeper and tuck away effort as anything of note.
The other main chances we had was a sweeping diagonal ball from Reid (if I recall correctly) on the left which Iwelumo was only just short of toeing in. Iwelumo lead the line admirably and nearly scored the opener when a ball cut back across the box was sent curling wide of the post.
Thomas livened up second half and made several effective runs. I was a bit miffed at his substitution over that of the lost Ambrose, but the latter became quite effective on the wing. Todorov with the ball at his feet bought us lots of time up front, Iwelumo was now carrying a knock, but still won the necessary headers. His replacement McLeod lacked composure in what would have been a sweet last minute breakaway goal. They nearly scored a looping own goal when one of their defenders sent the ball over his keeper's head. Racon came on and looked like S. Wright-Phillips on one of his better days. he got a solid, if untesting long range shot off. Reid also had a long shot go over after a run.
Defensively we looked much better - just look at the lovely "0" in the scoreline. Some very committed and fair challenges today - Mcarthy's body block of a shot. Both he and Mills made tackles with their heads. Fortune's excellent block tackle at the edge of the box when Palace broke was rewarded (thankfully) by the referee's excellent judgment. He certainly seemed to give a lot of decisions our way, but as has been said before we had the edge in quality.
Ambrose and Semedo are still ineffective in the middle of the park for me, but Pards must see something that I don't. 3 wins in 3 probably. Powell was so reassuring at left back, but didn't get tested truly until Palace made a change on the right. ZZ stood out with his movement, passing and energy. Reid was in the game in fits and starts, but with the ball he is so dangerous.
A very committed performance, even from those less prominent in the match. A great moment between the players and the fans at the end - a bit of a bond started there. Logic asides, we beat Palace 1 - 0 and that is still making me smile. Great day.

It was scrappy but we can take great heart from the fight that the players put in. I think this was a huge confidence builder/character forming result building on the that two games. We have class throughout the team but we need to match that with fight and we did it. As the team gels, and confidence grows, performances will improve but the desire to win was clear for all to see. Pretty performances will win you some but we need gritty ones as well.

Totally agree Bing. And so many players to come back like Varney, Magic, Holland, Moo2akill, Sodje and Gibbs
Shame in a way there is no the international break, as i think we had a chance to put a little run together now. Lets hope Ilewumo's injury was not serious, because he was left to admirably struggle for the cause for far too long with just one leg.
[cite]Posted By: AFKA Bartram[/cite]good write ups Sco and Henry.

on the other hand it will give Chris and Luke time to get fit, yassin will be two weeks closer and Gibbs will be.....:- )
Also time to bed Sodje and Mills as well as Racon into the squad. maybe a blessing in disguise having just played three tough games in a week which must have taken it out of them. Powell must need a rest.
