Winter-January 2026 Transfer Window Rumours ...

  • I see rumblings elsewhere that the owners have “taken us as far as they are prepared to” because we haven’t signed anyone in the first week of the January window.
Our fans as patient as ever then
Tbf we've all known that we needed a LWB since....er....2 months ago. Should have been on the blower then & had someone lined up to come in on Jan 2nd. But a week  has passed & we are no closer to signing anyone......apart from an already injured one.

But it's not easy as that they tell me. Wheels have to be put into motion & cogs have to turn. We also have to wait for club A to sell to club B so that club C can sign player x......

So not putting any money on a fit, ready to go LWB starting against Sheff Utd in 8 days time.
    So much nonsense.

Yes, we've known we need a LWB for months, do you really, I mean really, think they only started looking, short listing and phoning on January 2nd?

Or is it more likely they have been doing all that and more but as you yourself go on to explain there are other factors, other parties, other reasons, that might be in play.

If I said I rang my financial advisor this morning and they said they couldn't instantly shift a pension, arrange a mortgage or a loan and I then whinged and whinged and whinged about how lazy they were or unprepared all financial advisors were you might have a more informed perspective.

We'll sign someone when it's possible, not when we or the club ideally want to.
Love all the digs I get......bring them on I say.

And to answer your point  - if, back in November, you knew your fixed rate mortgage term was ending on Jan 1st, when would you contact your broker/ adviser to make sure you didnt revert to your lenders Standard Variable Rate on Jan 1st ??

But obviously I'm wrong again & happy to be proved it when a new, fit, experienced LWB starts against Sheff U next Sat.

Totally understand your point but football is a dirty business. Money is generally the deciding factor and on that front & others we’re probably bottom of the list to attract players in the championship. I agree we’re weak in a few positions and need reinforcements asap otherwise we’re prime for relegation. Keep positive!!!

And yet if we sign players ahead of the summer training camp we applaud ‘getting our business done early’.

I asume the reality of the window is cash and who is playing hard ball on fees and wages.

Haven’t got any names at the moment though.
New CEO announced . Matt Northall.  Not heard of him but he is said to be well connected with a Sheik, a quality baker and some bitches.

no wonder he used to shave it off - its what happens when you spend all your time on your superdeal phone consuming cheap crisps and fizzy drinks

LWB already in the building - he'll be acting as CEO until the 17th when the transfermarket website will let him play

I think it’s easier said than done to say oh we should be in for *insert player wanted by 99% of championship squads.* The reality is we are a recently promoted side low on the totem pole at the moment. The established championship sides who can offer higher wages are always going to get first pick of the litter we are not there yet.

Of course transfers take time, but I don't think NJ helps himself with his comments (from the start of the month) about sleeping at the training ground because he's so busy with transfer business etc

It does create expectations that we'll be doing early business. Instead not only have we not signed anyone, we haven't done any business yet in terms of loaning players out, or indeed recalling any of the players we have out.

I read it more that he cant be doing anything more to get stuff over the line. So if it goes Pete Tong its not through lack of effort.

All the people who tell us how hard it is to get a transfer done, do not explain how are rivals do it so quickly, and how this seems to be the same every season. We then end up with the players who have not played in weeks or months and are not ready to start for weeks.
Yes that is not  every signing, but we do seem to have a a very high proportion of these most seasons.

It’s because other clubs have refined and mature management teams to prepare for signings.  We have a manager who wants to do it all as he trusts no one. In some ways this is great (owning problems, getting his team to play his way or no way) but does not scale. It’s why he is doing ‘15 hours at the training ground’ but lives 10 min drive away.

We’ve all worked with these type before and seen the impact of this type of behaviour.

To be clear, I support Jones 100% but it will mean we need to be patient

Thought Rodwell dealt with transfers with him? Which means he’s not doing it all himself I guess.
  • I thought that Phil Chapple does a lot of the preparation work. That's what he's there for isn't it ?

    Does it "create expectations"?

He's saying he's working hard but says nothing about early business or timescales.

Personally, i'd be more worried that he's not going home to rest at a busy and stressful time.

If someone is sleeping at the training ground at the start of January, and specifically says how hard they are working at transfers, that certainly implies that we want early business. AND that he wants everyone to know how hard they are working to get transfers in.

If we just wanted a couple of bodies in sometime in January, then I assume he'd be back home with the family more, and letting Chapple and Rodwell do the grunt work at this stage.

Another player I have liked for a while is Joe Powell.  Currently captaining Rotherham but he has a crecking left foot, takes a lovely set piece and is very creative.  Might offer us more offensively than the midfielders currently do and he is out of contract in the summer I believe so unlikely to be horrendously proced.
Most sensible suggestion in this whole thread. East Londoner and played in the same West Ham youth teams as Conor Coventry, and I reckon of similar quality. Best part is that, although primarily a LWB, he can play in many other positions, so will still be useful if and when Edwards returns. Someone who is within our price range, unlike many fanciful suggestions here.

It should not be necessary for him to do that,  if plans made in advance.

I would say it's a must win for Chelsea.
For us it's a no injuries to major players game, not sure if I would risk playing Bell.

we might after Johnathan Lego again!!, I know tenuous!!😬
  • My understanding of why Nathen Jones gets heavily involved with the actual transfer negotiations is because he likes to talk to the player and "sell" Charlton to them. Rather than just leave it to someone else, afterall Nathen Jones is the "face of Charlton" at the moment whether you like that or not.
