MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs West Bromwich Albion - Tuesday 4th November 2025 - 7:45pm KO
Charlton Athletic vs West Bromwich Albion
Tuesday 4th November 2025 - 7:45pm Kick-Off
Referee: Lewis Smith
Introduction
Its yet another midweek match in the Championship this coming Tuesday evening, we may not have to worry about the prospect of distractions such as the EFL Trophy. Yet we do have to worry about finding room to play around the various International Breaks. We're a quarter of the way through the 2024/25 season, our first return to this level in five years... We've surprised plenty so far... But we've achieved nothing yet!!
The Opposition
Name: West Bromwich Albion (12th) - Manager: Ryan Mason
Ground: The Hawthorns
Previous League Result: West Brom 0-0 Sheff Wed
Next up at the Valley will be West Brom, making their way down from the Midlands, knowing that a win in SE7 would take them from 12th, to above the Addicks - Our opponents under the floodlights come into this match though, having scored fewer times than Charlton (Quite surprised that's possible), whilst having conceded on 14-occasions... The Baggies are however stronger on the road, three of their five wins have come away from Birmingham, yet they have only the solitary point (coming on Saturday) in their last three matches.
Naturally a first Managerial appointment for someone is always going to be tough for Ryan Mason, especially so at this level. Yet the ex-Spurs Midfielder is certainly giving it a go... He joined West Brom back in June, leaving the comfort of Tottenham Hotspur, the place he's called home since 1999 (lets ignore the brief spell away at Hull for dramatic effect) - He had two spells as Interim Manager winning a total of six games, in 2021 and 2023, so there is certainly potential for someone whose playing career ended so unfairly.
No game is easy at this level... The Addicks go into this next fixture just five points from 2nd, and just three points from 17th; West Brom will be arriving at the Valley with just the solitary League victory in this corner of London since 1954... But what a dramatic victory that was... in 2005.
Charlton Team News
Sigh... Dread from it... Run from it... Destiny arrives all the same doesnt it... We thought that this season might be different, what fools we potentially were to think otherwise - The draw on paper was a fair result with Swansea City on Saturday, but without the typical injuries this time of the year, it could, perhaps have ended much better, given how difficult we are to break down as a side once we've got the lead.
It would be extremely surprising if we were to see Amari'i Bell or Reece Burke over the coming weeks, given that both were withdrawn from the action before Half-Time. So now the question is... Who comes in as their replacements? - Well replacing Burke should be an easy one, you'd expect Kayne Ramsay to slot back into the Centre-Back role, at Full-Back we could see the exciting return of Ibby Fullah, who for a large portion of this season, had been our top scorer, having already found the net on two occasions, albeit both coming in the League Cup.
At the very least you'd expect to see Fullah and Anderson on the bench, with the latter having to wait patiently for this moment. We could even see Nathan Jones opting to tinker with the formation slightly, four at the back perhaps, with Kayne Ramsay at Left-Back and a change to 4-3-3... That though brings a small chill down my spine, given the results of tinkering this time last year, whilst we sought to deal with injured absentees in similar circumstances.
Kaminski
Bree - Jones - Gillesphey - Ramsay
Coventry - Costello
Carey
Olaofe - Leaburn - Campbell
Substitutes: Mannion - Fullah - Apter - Docherty - Anderson - Knibbs - Berry - Hernandez - Kelman

To be fair, one of those evenings where I thought I'd start it, got into the writing, and thought I'd just post it, else I'd probably just forget7 -

Judging by the 2024/25 references I assume it's a standard template and he just changes some names.fenaddick said:That was quick!

This game against WBA will be our 14th of the season.Fun fact: the last time we were in this league, WBA were also our 14th game of the season, but at the Hawthorns.

Injuries now kicking in and especially in defence. Be interesting how Jones sets us up on Tuesday and for the upcoming fixtures going forward2

I can see it being freshened up again with different players coming in as we did at Hull . Considering we’ve got a really tough game at Wrexham on Saturday and need our best players available.0
 -
I agree that in addition to the enforced changes, we could see a couple of other tweaks. No easy games as we know. Under the lights at the valley. I think we might sneak another win you know. 1-0. Leaburn.0

            Great preview as always FA.
Losing two players to injury yesterday was a blow and we can only hope they are not out for too long.
Not so long ago in this position we would have to fill those places with kids.
But now we have the likes of Ramsay,Apter and Costello to choose from, so that's not too shabby at all.
I expect another tough hard fought game on Tuesday ( ain't they all) but am quite optimistic we can nick it.
2 1 Charlton with Kelman getting another.
Onwards and upwards.2 -
Jones I'm fairly sure was playing through injury, probably had a painkilling injection at halftime to make it through.

Trying to second guess our Nathan is a tall order. After Hull and Swansea the players do look shattered so you'd expect a few changes but I'm not sure. Knibbs may come in for Doc but I can't see Coventry or Carey being sidelined. I think Apter will come in as he can create... But the defence looks terrifying so it's got to be damage limitation in the next two games and get to the International break and hope that Bell might be back after.

Think it will look like either:
Kaminski
Ramsay Jones Gillesphey
Bree Hernandez
Coventry Docherty
Carey
Kelman TC
or
Kaminski
Bree Ramsay Jones Gillesphey
Coventry Docherty
Apter Carey TC
Leaburn
2-1 under the lights - home advantage will count3 -

Starting with Tuesday night, these are the equivalent 5 game spell (matches 14 to 19) last season where messing around with the starting line up looked like it threatened to derail our season with just 5 points picked uppeterreeves said:Trying to second guess our Nathan is a tall order. I agree that it is going to be damage limitation. In addition to being without Bell and Burke I don't think we will have enough defenders to play 3 at the back. I'd be surprised if Bree plays as he seemed to be struggling with an injury - might explain his bad free kick near the end. Lloyd Jones was clearly struggling so won't be able to play Tuesday and against Wrexham. Would take 2 points from the next two games.peterreeves said:Trying to second guess our Nathan is a tall order. Unless you are medical staff at the club, this is just made up bollocks.Nacnud1905 said:

I think we have to stick to a back 3 because Ramsay and Gillesphey aren't back 4 CB's8

Realistically, these are the options although you could swap who plays LWB/RWB on most of them3 -
I cant see Jones opting out unless he has made injury worse.
Kaminsky
Ramsay Jones. Gilllesphy
Bree. Fernandez
Coventry
Anderson. Carey
Kelman. TC
If Jones is out, I think we can recall Zach although he is not getting gametime at Hibs.1 -

This will be a tight game, not because I am doubting we have the ability to do well, but because we looked knackered Saturday and just about saw the game out, and we haven't looked the same since Ipswich...
This will be a 2-1 or 1-0 sort of game, but we have to get a win, and would love to see what Hernandez can do from the off...🤞1 -
Can I just say, if we are knackered after the run of games, so will the opposition be, the managers of the respective teams will pick players accordingly. So don’t really see how it will affect us any more than anyone else. They are pro footballers and fit as f,:k, except the injured ones. Let’s not make excuses and go and win a game of football.1

Watched Ipswich v West Brom and West Brom were very poor .. but they have names that don’t seem to be performing at the moment .. don’t think they will be as good as Swansea tactic wise so I think we will get a little more room in midfield on Tuesday …. Team Selection think Burke will be ok.. he was taken of with Tuesday in mind .. Ramsey struggled on the left side , so Apter could get a recall .. up front who partnering Kelman, Olaofe deserves to start , Campbell had to many chances and still not contributed to the team this season … score prediction can’t see past another draw to be honest 1-1

2nd game in what looks like a tricky set of November fixtures. West Brom are another inconsistent outfit, won 5, lost 5
No reason we can't win this and get back on the winning track. We must get the most from our home games.
Be interesting to see who's selected all over the starting Xl0 -
Could try new system 3142 …… Ramsey Jones and Gilly , Coventry holding , Apter Doc Carey Campbell , Olaofe Kelman2
 -
Apprantly Bree has played at LB 21 times in his career, surely the best option to fill in there, with Apter coming in on the right.
