Great being at the valley and winning games after what we have endured for a lot of years now. I love being there and it's great that we seem to be debating whether one of our goals counts as an assist for a player or not. Let's hope for plenty more ambiguous goals! Onto Ipswich which is a bit more local for me living in Norwich. Feels good taking grandson to his Sunday football this morning and being around City fans 😁

Well, we certainly made hard work of that. Having been beautifully placed at half-time, we contrived to almost squander a comfortable 2-0 lead. Ultimately, though, it’s another 3 precious points to keep us in the calm waters of mid-table - 15 down, 35 to go.

We were hardly fluent in the first half but created a number of openings against a very shaky Wednesday defence, with Sonny Carey’s desire to shoot on sight and then follow up giving us an early lead. Bree’s excellent free-kick laid on the second for Burke just before half time and we went in feeling uncharacteristically comfortable.

Wednesday continued to look vulnerable throughout the second half but managed to achieve a measure of control in midfield and push us deep. Our ‘press’ seemed to fall apart and Wednesday found a lot of space in midfield to work the ball to within 30 yards of our goal. Very uncharacteristic of a Charlton side under Nathan. Their goal when it came was deserved and no surprise and, duly encouraged, Wednesday pressed forward for an equaliser. They missed one decent opportunity with a header squirting wide, while we broke on them on several occasions but a lack of quality in the final ball let us down.

In the end, we saw the game out reasonably well, while also being treated to Wednesday’s keeper reprising Schumacher’s 1982 assault on Patrick Battiston. To the amazement of everyone in the ground, the ref waved play on until his Lino set him straight. Fortunately, Tanto was unscathed (not a man to bump into) and although Macca was unable to insert the ball into the top corner against the midget in goal, it mattered not.

Not our best performance by any means but Carey was excellent and Jones, Bell, Bree and Leaburn also did very well.

On to Ipswich, where I feel Leaburn and Tanto may start. We looked a little flat in midfield today but Carey is undroppable and Jones understandably trusts the Coventry/Doc combination in the centre that has generally served us so well. Hopefully Anderson will be on the bench if we need to inject a bit of energy and pace.

15 points from 10 games is a fine return - happy days.

Totally agree about anderson,we could have done with him yesterday when they were dominating midfield in the second half.

Good first half and looked like dominated two very different but equally as good goals, Wendy's looked shot and that we'd go on to bag a couple more.

Second half and they came out with a point to prove as we relaxed far far too much meaning they ended up giving us a scare.

Subs, again, the same old subs at the same time killed us, same changes regardless of how the game is flowing.
Said it in the match thread and others have already here but I'll say it again, the rinse and repeat attitude towards the "game changers" hasn't worked for weeks now, don't see the need to hook off the same players if they're playing well, Kelman was getting in behind and pressing well the sat-tues-sat argument doesn't have much legs imo most of these players have done that for their careers to date, and if sport science and the fitness and conditioning department haven't worked out how to get a player to do that schedule for at least 80 mins by now, then well, let's hope next season we're allowed 10 subs I guess.

Leaburn and Knibbs don't match the intensity we start with and we drop off and look worse most of the time, people get bitchy when you criticise Leaburn particularly, but some of it is fair.

Meh, great start not so great end, lucky to escape with the win, but win we did at least. Nice gap between us and the mini league and drop zone.

Don't think we really needed Knibbs and Berry on the bench. Anderson would've given a different option.

We started the second half really well, closing them down and constantly nicking the ball off them but we couldn't get that 3rd goal and as they threw caution to the wind we retreated and played on the counter. The first goal in the 2nd half was always going to dictate how the rest of the game panned out and once they scored, that was that. We did well to defend it out and hang on. Credit to them, they never gave up and caused us more problems, even in the first half, than most teams this season. As i said a few weeks ago, NJ now has his 5 defenders with the current 2 wing backs and although we are picking up points, the creativity is pretty much limited to carey and campbell and is easier for the opposition to defend against.Apter was a bit of a liability against millwall, losing the ball quite often and hasn't featured since but i think he, or the fella from ipswich is going to be needed if we are to score more goals. We've conceded less than most of the division but at the expense of scoring less - i'm not complaining but that's the dilemma NJ has and all the time we are picking up points, i don't think he'll change it.

It was the annual Red White and Black day yesterday, and I was thinking that the players would take the knee before that particular game due to the occasion.

The Millwall keeper got 6 match ban for his assault on the Palace guy, this lunatic should get the same, that could have been really serious. How did the ref not give it straight away,he was in a perfect position and was going to play on.
I am a bit mystified by how we play when leaburn comes on,surely a 6ft 7in man should be occupied in the opposing penalty area, but he spends all his time out wide,on both wings. We had virtually no threat from the wings today,TC was off the pace and we certainly missed Ramsays runs down the right.Bannan was off his game today, but Love him or hate him,he is a fine player, who makes his side tick.He had plenty of the ball in the 2nd half and had he been on form he could well have done us some damage. We do not have this sort of player, someone to put their foot on the ball look up and play a pass.We depend on work rate, especially Doc and Coventry, but I fear they wont be able to keep this energy level up for a full season in this league.
Somewhere along the line,I think Nathan must show some faith in the guys not playing and rotate a bit more, as we could well run out of steam later in the season.
All in all 15 points from 10 is a great start,2 tough away games to come,2 points would be excellent.

  • Poor display yesterday and lucky to escape with a win. We pressed then at the start of the second and looked comfortable but after the subs we spent the rest of the game on the back foot and invited pressure.

    The ref was unbelievable...

A win is a win no matter what. We're going to have to grind out a lot of games this season by 1 goal margins, which don't bother me.

Thought Wednesday were decent at times and up for a fight. They put under pressure but we managed to see it through.

Feel we made the subs to early and didn't need to as we were fairly comfortable and Campbell is the player the opposition try to stop and we are better with him in the team.

Kelman had a good game today and thought he was going to get that goal when he got through, was a good block by the defender.

I'm a big fan of Bree and he put in great ball, but don't think he had his best game.

I feel Anderson should be on the bench as others have said, he would be perfect in a game like yesterday getting stuck in and closing them down. Son of Kishishev. One of my heroes.

Had 2-0 win on bet with Carey first and last goalscorer. Got 1/3 of bet. Happy days.

I don't feel like our subs changed the game negatively. We lost control because our levels were dropping, we were switching off, and Bannon was dropping into an almost left-back position, which we didn't get to grips with.

I thought Leaburn and Olaofe were really good. Miles won his headers, and directed them to our players, and Olaofe scores our third if their goalkeeper doesn't poleaxe him.

I'm really happy with three points and our performance in this league so far. We deserved the win and on many occasions, they got very lucky with the bounce of the ball, particularly when we challenged on the press. We were almost through on goal 2-3 times, but for an unfortunate rebound off their player's shins.

A very good result and we're showing we can pick up a good amount of points in this league.

  • We didn’t play very well and got three points. In the very recent past we’d have not played very well and lost.

The club is in a much better place.

We can pick apart the reasons for a relatively poor performance until the cows come home, but we won the game without being very good. There’s a lot to be said for that

A bit of a strange game. I thought after 20 minutes they were there for the taking. Halftime I thought a cricket score could happen. 20 minutes into the 2nd half I was looking forward to scraping a win.
3 points is still 3 points more than we had at the start of the day, also 3 more points than Wednesday got. Very important we got that win with some tough games coming up.
  • Not sure I agree with this Leaburn slander train, thought he wasn't bad when he came on had a couple moments of good footwork and won headers. I think I can see where jones is coming from when we're ahead to bring Leaburn on because he should be an outlet to go long to and keep the ball at the other end of the pitch, not sure thats Leaburns game though.

Agreed. I do think our squad is a bit unbalanced, with effectively 3 players who like the play the central attacking midfielder role (Carey, Knibbs and Berry), but not much cover in the central midfield area, where NJ is really reluctant to play either Rankin-Costello or Anderson there.

Leaving side the risk of injuries, Coventry has 3 yellow cards now, so there is the risk of a suspension there too.
  • Personally thought both Kellman and Leaburn had good games. Kellman is definitely improving and contributing more would like to have seen him stay on with either Miles or Tanto feel that goal is not far away

It was not a poor display far from it .. Sheff Wed deserve slot if credit from the first whistle people think they were just going to roll over then they don’t know much about football .. We took our chances but largely dominated the first half , they were dangerous from set play and were very direct and picking up the looses balls exactly how we play .. their the first team that stopped Coventry and Doc getting hold of mid .. second they pushed Bannon up and that really changed the game he was best player on the park , I would have had Costello on early to do a specific man to man on Bannon but we let him have a free run ..taking off Kelman also changed the game ,, the defence suddenly had more time to play the ball … but defensively again we were very strong . But you have to praise Wednesday who kept going the whole game … we meant how to win a different way today

I thought Leaburn and Tanto played really well when they came on, and that is no criticism of Kelman and a possibly jet lagged TC.
I thought it was another good example where we have enough resources to change up, and change up in a situation where we looked like we needed a bit of refreshment.
For me it was one of the best sub appearances by Leaburn this season.
BTW, beyond the discussion of the appalling referee decision, is Tanto OK? That clattering by a mad American keeper would’ve done for me.

I’d like to see Campbell and Leaburn start in midweek. Nothing against Kelman, but Campbell has two players on him constantly, and Leaburn will be needed for his flickons/hold up play.

That was imo, our biggest game of the season so far objectively with it being the easiest game on paper, and their circumstances.

Sloppy second half (specifically when Kelman and TC came off) but at least we got the win. Played better against Millwall & Leicester and didn't, just how it goes.

It'll be interesting to see if their keeper gets a one or three game ban, or maybe more: three games for the assault, one for the handball outside the area and one for denying a goalscoring opportunity!

On a totally different point, I've never noticed so many tourists at The Valley. I heard all sorts of languages bith inside and outside the ground and I think the scarf seller must have done some pretty good business yesterday. Is the club changing its marketing strategy?

Thought we stood up to Weds’ 2nd half pressure well.

First half we were in control and deserved the 2-0 lead.

If I wouldn’t look a bit of a tw*t with ginger hair, I would seriously be considering paying homage to our ‘Ginger Genius’. Love the bloke.

Hoping at least one of Ipswich or Hull seriously underestimate little old Charlton coming to town. 2-3 points this week and I’ll be super happy. Safe travels fellow Addicks - many miles will we travel…
