On a totally different point, I've never noticed so many tourists at The Valley. I heard all sorts of languages bith inside and outside the ground and I think the scarf seller must have done some pretty good business yesterday. Is the club changing its marketing strategy?
I had a row of Germans behind me and four Irish blokes in front of me in the Upper West. Plus there were three blokes just to my right who didn't seem to say a word to each other and didn't move when any of the goals went in. All very strange.
  • Kelman: 10 games, no goals. Didn't win the ball in the air. Didn't have a shot on target. Pace average. Not too much physical presence. No idea why he's preferred to either Leaburn or Olaofe who really ought to start.

Was the first game where I expected a win which is actually the worst way to go into the game. As a consequence felt only relief at the end as it was nothing like against Blackburn. Tanto made such a big difference when he came on and feel he definitely deserves a start. It definitely feels  Like on certain occasions, we have a goal scored against us soon after we substitute players which surely cannot be unconnected. Weirdly Kelman is getting better even though he’s not scoring. It’s going to be a real test these next two away games.

But passing the ball to your team mate is an essential part of the game. You shouldn't get extra "marks" for doing your job.
    Right…

But scoring goals is an essential part of the game. You shouldn't get extra "marks" for doing your job.

But making tackles is an essential part of the game. You shouldn't get extra "marks" for doing your job.

But a goalkeeper making saves is an essential part of the game. You shouldn't get extra "marks" for doing your job.

But making blocks is an essential part of the game. You shouldn't get extra "marks" for doing your job.

Can I just check what we can give extra marks for? I assume it’s nothing on the pitch as that is clearly just the players doing their job?

There are many ways to appraise performance - on the football pitch, at work, playing a guitar - whatever. Think of it as higher or lower marks. If Kaminski keeps a clean sheet but the opposition have zero shots on target then he doesn't have to do his job - but you may mark him as competent performance as there is little else he could have done. If he let's in five goals - all of which you or I could have saved then his performance is less than competent and would be marked much lower. On the other hand he keeps a clean sheet with half a dozen world class saves and in addition saves three penalties then I would expect the mark to represent significantly above competent even though he is 'just making saves' which is an essential part of his job.

Golfie holds an alternative viewpoint :)

It'll be interesting to see if their keeper gets a one or three game ban, or maybe more: three games for the assault, one for the handball outside the area and one for denying a goalscoring opportunity!

We met several who were in London for the NFL and decided to take in our game too.

Ah that was hard work in the 2nd half, wasn't it?  Ref was terrible, missed loads in our favour, though we did score from one of the few fouls he actually gave. If the refereeing authorities take a look at that yesterday, I suspect he'll be dropping down. Two players on the ground, possible head injuries, even if you're not giving the red for any of the reasons it was a red, you stop play for treatment, surely? Carrey and Doch were my standouts, but there's a few people around me calling for TC to be dropped or subbed.

Anyway I woke up at night worrying about what happens when Jones takes Tyreece off. So I've crunched the numbers.

Of our 10 league games so far, TC has played all game for 2 - both defeats (Leicester H and QPR A).
Of the games where he was subbed, the results stayed the same after the sub twice (Blackburn H, Bristol C A); improved twice (Watford H, Sheff United A - both late winners ) and got worse 4 times, three of which resulted in dropped points (Preston A, Derby A, Millwall H). We got away with it yesterday. All those of you who think Tyreece shouldn't start, I think the issue is we need him to play longer - or we need to replicate his pressing. I've not crunched this lot for Kelman but suspect there's a similar pattern.

That was imo, our biggest game of the season so far objectively with it being the easiest game on paper, and their circumstances.

Sloppy second half (specifically when Kelman and TC came off) but at least we got the win. Played better against Millwall & Leicester and didn't, just how it goes.

    Good video @Braziliance
Wednesday fans at the beginning were hilarious.

    😂

  • Watching the replay again of the goalkeeper taking out Tanto it's unbelievable how the ref initially let play go on. Utterly shocking...

We’ve been on the radar for ground hoppers for a while now. I like it.

Another thing that I know has been mentioned before. Instead of bringing on two attackers for the last 20 minutes he really needs to consider taking Cov or Doch off at that time, especially when we're up in games.
Love the pair of them to death but they get through a lot of work. That midfield went flat when the subs came on yesterday, and not for the first time. Rankin Cos and Anderson definitely need to see some more involvement to freshen things up and keep the energy level high imo

Think there’s a case to be made that all our forwards played well, but we need to work on alternative pairings maybe.

Tanto does press and is a clear attacking threat with power and pace, TCs work off the ball is immense, especially his tracking back which allows the defence to keep shape, and Leaburn won lots of headers, and purposeful ones - I feel he’s improved that part of his game. Kelman’s link up play was great at times.

Clearly the lack of goals is a worry, but the bigger picture is a team is exceeding expectations, and it is all about collective effort and results, however they are achieved and wherever the goals come from.

Similarly thought there were many tourists there yesterday. Big group directly behind us and noticed a separate load of Scandinavians wafting to their seats beers in hand, before being hooked by stewards.

Was asked by a Polish couple to take a photo with stadium backdrop and half and half scarf aloft. It was upside down! (I did tell them).

I think Ramsay's been a big miss for the side over the last few games and one of the reasons we haven't quite clicked. It's not just about being  suspended/dropped either. When he has played he just hasn't looked like the same player he did last season or in the first few games of this one.

The stand out for me is finishing goal scoring opportunities. We've come away with the same points Coventry did..... but could've also been 1 or 0 points. How long can we keep starting a striking partnership without a goal between them?
I would suggest all season if we end up top half.

I’d like to see Campbell and Leaburn start in midweek. Nothing against Kelman, but Campbell has two players on him constantly, and Leaburn will be needed for his flickons/hold up play.
    Flick-ons to who though???

Leaburn can’t control how his teammates move, they need to be alert to where the ball could go

    Why?

We can all take the virtue signalling when we win.

Had we had lost 0-1 you would all agree.

Honestly players can do fuck all for 50 games as long as your face fits or the price tag is big enough it's okay.

Wake the fuck up happy clappers if the midfield and defence hadn't been getting out of the shit Kelman would of slaughtered.
But we defend as a team and Kelman plays a very important part in that.
I'm on the fence as to how much he will improve and start scoring.
But he's giving 100% and is playing a role in a top half team.
We nearly all thought we would be hovering around the relegation zone (ok we may end up down there yet).
  • We weren't at our best, but we got the win and that puts us in good shape after 10 games.
Astonishing progress under NJ. Less than 2 years ago we were putting out a team that failed to beat Cray Valley Paper Mills at The Valley.

Hope we get to see tanto or Leaburn start with Kelman soon, Campbell needs a rest
You mean the Campbell who had an assist for Carey's goal?
I’m not sure that counts as an assist . It’s was Carey’s own shot that was parried and he followed it up .
I’d say passing the ball to the person who has a shot counts as an assist
Would make sense but I don't think that's how the stats sites work. I don't think it would be a TC assist on a bet, or in Fantasy League for example

Agree but my point is that Kelman will be far more effective alongside Leaburn or Tanto's knock downs and flick ons?

A Few people suggesting they expected or still might see us flirting with a relegation battle, do they actually believe this? Or are they saying it so’s not to be overly disappointed if we end up in that situation. I just haven’t seen anything to suggest this is on the cards so far this season… or am I being too optimistic?. NJ’s teams get better as the season progresses, hoping this runs true this season.

A game of 2 halves. We were great first 45 mins but to be fair they missed a sitter just before we scored. Felt we didn't expose their keeper enough, apparently third choice keeper at Cardiff on loan.

Second half different story do we push on or sit on what we've got, they decided different, fully warranted goal and led a short life before they did.

Subs seem to unsettle the side but strangely neither kelman and Campbell were offering much.

Take that all day long seeing a couple of games we deserved something  and got nothing.

I think you have put your finger on the cause of our goal drought. Bring back Ramani Edmonds-Green in the winter window!
I know we're not averse to signing injury prone players, but I think even we'd draw the line at signing someone who's currently out with a busted ACL.

We’re competitive. Hard working and difficult to play against. Jones sets us up to hold on to the point we start with. I don’t think we’re good enough in attack to trouble the better teams and it’s almost fatal if we go a goal behind. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get a win at either Hull or Ipswich but not surprised if we lose both. Don’t see a relegation battle but we’ll need to stay on our toes and will always need an eye on the rear view mirror I expect.

Fair point, I believe we will get better also, not taking things for granted the championship will bite us on the arse if we do. But I think we are better than that with jones in charge.
